Strategic Communication Between Prospect Theoretic Agents over a Gaussian Test Channel

In this paper, we model a Stackelberg game in a simple Gaussian test channel where a human transmitter (leader) communicates a source message to a human receiver (follower). We model human decision making using prospect theory models proposed for continuous decision spaces. Assuming that the value function is the squared distortion at both the transmitter and the receiver, we analyze the effects of the weight functions at both the transmitter and the receiver on optimal communication strategies, namely encoding at the transmitter and decoding at the receiver, in the Stackelberg sense. We show that the optimal strategies for the behavioral agents in the Stackelberg sense are identical to those designed for unbiased agents. At the same time, we also show that the prospect-theoretic distortions at both the transmitter and the receiver are both larger than the expected distortion, thus making behavioral agents less contended than unbiased agents. Consequently, the presence of cognitive biases increases the need for transmission power in order to achieve a given distortion at both transmitter and receiver.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, Accepted to MILCOM-2017, Corrections made in the new versio

Enhancing the resilience of the power system to accommodate the construction of the new power system: key technologies and challenges

The increasingly frequent extreme events pose a serious threat to the resilience of the power system. At the same time, the power grid is transforming into a new type of clean and low-carbon power system due to severe environmental issues. The system shows strong randomness with a high proportion of renewable energy, which has increased the difficulty of maintaining the safe and stable operation of the power system. Therefore, it is urgent to improve the resilience of the new power system. This paper first elaborates on the concept of power system resilience, listing the characteristics of new power systems and their impact on grid resilience. Secondly, the evaluation methods for resilient power grids are classified into two categories, and measures to improve the resilience of the new power system are reviewed from various stages of disasters. Then, the critical technologies for improving the resilience of the new power system are summarized. Finally, the prospective research directions for new power system resilience enhancement are expounded

The smart electricity grids have been evolving to a more complex cyber-physical ecosystem of infrastructures with integrated communication networks, new carbon-free sources of powergeneratio n, advanced monitoring and control systems, and a myriad of emerging modern physical hardware technologies. With the unprecedented complexity and heterogeneity in dynamic smart grid networks comes additional vulnerability to emerging threats such as cyber attacks. Rapid development and deployment of advanced network monitoring and communication systems on one hand, and the growing interdependence of the electric power grids to a multitude of lifeline critical infrastructures on the other, calls for holistic defense strategies to safeguard the power grids against cyber adversaries. In order to improve the resilience of the power grid against adversarial attacks and cyber intrusions, advancements should be sought on detection techniques, protection plans, and mitigation practices in all electricity generation, transmission, and distribution sectors. This survey discusses such major directions and recent advancements from a lens of different detection techniques, equipment protection plans, and mitigation strategies to enhance the energy delivery infrastructure resilience and operational endurance against cyber attacks. This undertaking is essential since even modest improvements in resilience of the power grid against cyber threats could lead to sizeable monetary savings and an enriched overall social welfare

Evaluating the inertia of the Jordanian power grid

    Get PDF
The increasing penetration of renewable energy sources in power grids has resulted in the need for a comprehensive evaluation of their impact on the dynamic behavior of the power system, including its inertia. This study aimed to evaluate the inertia of the current Jordanian power system at different penetration levels of renewable energy sources using DIgSILENT PowerFactory simulation software. In this study, the value of the constant inertia was calculated to be 8.755 s. The results were analyzed to determine the effect of renewable energy penetration on the inertia of the power system. The findings provide valuable information for the development of control strategies for integrating renewable energy sources into the Jordanian power system, ensuring stability and reliability in the power system operation. This study contributes to the understanding of the impact of renewable energy sources on power system inertia and supports the development of renewable energy integration strategies.13 página

Integration of DERs on power systems: challenges and opportunities

    Get PDF
The integration of large amounts of distributed energy resources (DERs) as photovoltaic solar generation, micro-cogeneration, electric vehicles, distributed storage or demand response pose new challenges and opportunities on the power sector. In this paper, we review the current trends on: i) how consumers adopting DERs can self-provide energy services and provide other services at system level, ii) what can be expected at distribution networks and how retail markets will evolve with more proactive and market engaged consumers, iii) what are the effects and integration of DERs on wholesale markets, and iv) what are the challenges that DERs pose on cybersecurity and the opportunities for improving system resilience. Several recommendations are given for achieving an efficient integration of DERs. For instance, the design of a comprehensive system of prices and charges and the elimination of existing barriers for market participation are crucial reforms to achieve a level playing field between distributed and centralized resources when providing electricity services.
