A Parallel Histogram-based Particle Filter for Object Tracking on SIMD-based Smart Cameras
We present a parallel implementation of a histogram-based particle filter for object tracking on smart cameras based on SIMD processors. We specifically focus on parallel computation of the particle weights and parallel construction of the feature histograms since these are the major bottlenecks in standard implementations of histogram-based particle filters. The proposed algorithm can be applied with any histogram-based feature setsâwe show in detail how the parallel particle filter can employ simple color histograms as well as more complex histograms of oriented gradients (HOG). The algorithm was successfully implemented on an SIMD processor and performs robust object tracking at up to 30 frames per secondâa performance difficult to achieve even on a modern desktop computer
Event-based Vision: A Survey
Event cameras are bio-inspired sensors that differ from conventional frame
cameras: Instead of capturing images at a fixed rate, they asynchronously
measure per-pixel brightness changes, and output a stream of events that encode
the time, location and sign of the brightness changes. Event cameras offer
attractive properties compared to traditional cameras: high temporal resolution
(in the order of microseconds), very high dynamic range (140 dB vs. 60 dB), low
power consumption, and high pixel bandwidth (on the order of kHz) resulting in
reduced motion blur. Hence, event cameras have a large potential for robotics
and computer vision in challenging scenarios for traditional cameras, such as
low-latency, high speed, and high dynamic range. However, novel methods are
required to process the unconventional output of these sensors in order to
unlock their potential. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the
emerging field of event-based vision, with a focus on the applications and the
algorithms developed to unlock the outstanding properties of event cameras. We
present event cameras from their working principle, the actual sensors that are
available and the tasks that they have been used for, from low-level vision
(feature detection and tracking, optic flow, etc.) to high-level vision
(reconstruction, segmentation, recognition). We also discuss the techniques
developed to process events, including learning-based techniques, as well as
specialized processors for these novel sensors, such as spiking neural
networks. Additionally, we highlight the challenges that remain to be tackled
and the opportunities that lie ahead in the search for a more efficient,
bio-inspired way for machines to perceive and interact with the world
Towards a Scalable Hardware/Software Co-Design Platform for Real-time Pedestrian Tracking Based on a ZYNQ-7000 Device
Currently, most designers face a daunting task to
research different design flows and learn the intricacies of
specific software from various manufacturers in
hardware/software co-design. An urgent need of creating a
scalable hardware/software co-design platform has become a key
strategic element for developing hardware/software integrated
systems. In this paper, we propose a new design flow for building
a scalable co-design platform on FPGA-based system-on-chip.
We employ an integrated approach to implement a histogram
oriented gradients (HOG) and a support vector machine (SVM)
classification on a programmable device for pedestrian tracking.
Not only was hardware resource analysis reported, but the
precision and success rates of pedestrian tracking on nine open
access image data sets are also analysed. Finally, our proposed
design flow can be used for any real-time image processingrelated
products on programmable ZYNQ-based embedded
systems, which benefits from a reduced design time and provide a
scalable solution for embedded image processing products
Evolutionary computing and particle filtering: a hardware-based motion estimation system
Particle filters constitute themselves a highly powerful estimation tool, especially when dealing with non-linear non-Gaussian systems. However, traditional approaches present several limitations, which reduce significantly their performance. Evolutionary algorithms, and more specifically their optimization capabilities, may be used in order to overcome particle-filtering weaknesses. In this paper, a novel FPGA-based particle filter that takes advantage of evolutionary computation in order to estimate motion patterns is presented. The evolutionary algorithm, which has been included inside the resampling stage, mitigates the known sample impoverishment phenomenon, very common in particle-filtering systems. In addition, a hybrid mutation technique using two different mutation operators, each of them with a specific purpose, is proposed in order to enhance estimation results and make a more robust system. Moreover, implementing the proposed Evolutionary Particle Filter as a hardware accelerator has led to faster processing times than different software implementations of the same algorithm
HEP Community White Paper on Software trigger and event reconstruction
Realizing the physics programs of the planned and upgraded high-energy
physics (HEP) experiments over the next 10 years will require the HEP community
to address a number of challenges in the area of software and computing. For
this reason, the HEP software community has engaged in a planning process over
the past two years, with the objective of identifying and prioritizing the
research and development required to enable the next generation of HEP
detectors to fulfill their full physics potential. The aim is to produce a
Community White Paper which will describe the community strategy and a roadmap
for software and computing research and development in HEP for the 2020s. The
topics of event reconstruction and software triggers were considered by a joint

A fast and robust hand-driven 3D mouse
The development of new interaction paradigms requires a natural interaction. This means that people should be able to interact with technology with the same models used to interact with everyday real life, that is through gestures, expressions, voice. Following this idea, in this paper we propose a non intrusive vision based tracking system able to capture hand motion and simple hand gestures. The proposed device allows to use the hand as a "natural" 3D mouse, where the forefinger tip or the palm centre are used to identify a 3D marker and the hand gesture can be used to simulate the mouse buttons. The approach is based on a monoscopic tracking algorithm which is computationally fast and robust against noise and cluttered backgrounds. Two image streams are processed in parallel exploiting multi-core architectures, and their results are combined to obtain a constrained stereoscopic problem. The system has been implemented and thoroughly tested in an experimental environment where the 3D hand mouse has been used to interact with objects in a virtual reality application. Boosting the Performance of Object Tracking with a Half-Precision Particle Filter on GPU
High-performance GPU-accelerated particle filter methods are critical for
object detection applications, ranging from autonomous driving, robot
localization, to time-series prediction. In this work, we investigate the
design, development and optimization of particle-filter using half-precision on
CUDA cores and compare their performance and accuracy with single- and
double-precision baselines on Nvidia V100, A100, A40 and T4 GPUs. To mitigate
numerical instability and precision losses, we introduce algorithmic changes in
the particle filters. Using half-precision leads to a performance improvement
of 1.5-2x and 2.5-4.6x with respect to single- and double-precision baselines
