Social impact assessment monitoring the Huntly monitoring project in retrospect

    Get PDF
The emerging field of Social Impact Assessment Monitoring is critically examined through a review of the Huntly Monitoring Project (HMP). A summary of the HMP, which is both reflexive and critical, identifies practical issues and criticisms arising from that research experience, as well as describing its research method and results. Criticisms of the application of Positivism to Social Science published during the six years of the HMP provide a framework for an SIA Monitoring critique. Alternative philosophical and theoretical positions advanced by Albrow, Giddens, Hagerstrand and Pred are examined. Ideas pertinent to SIA Monitoring are brought together in a discussion of Albrow’s Dialectical Paradigm, Giddens’ Theory of Action, and Hagerstrand’s Time-Geography. The implications for SIA Monitoring of two opposing philosophical positions within Social Science are examined through a comparison of eight SIA Monitoring options, with only three found to be compatible with the non-positivistic position. SIA Monitoring as a Study of Structuration is one of these three options, and a coherent methodology is provided for it by Time-Geography. Finally, it is concluded that designing another Huntly Monitoring Project to include non-positivistic ideas is possible but politically difficult

The Participatory Process behind the Green Infrastructure Plan in Scania, Sweden

This study explores stakeholders’ perceptions of the participation process of Green Infrastructure (GI) in Scania. Participation processes have become increasingly important and common in dealing with complex issues, especially within forestry. There is a threat to our forests' functional biodiversity and risks in the provision of ecosystem services, many species are threatened and have been red listed. In response to this biodiversity issue, the Swedish Government has mandated the County Administrative Boards to design regional GI plans, created with the inclusion of stakeholders and applying a participatory process. This plan aims to increase the knowledge base about the landscape and ecosystems values with the goal of long-term preservation and sustainable management, with initiatives for species and environments that are vulnerable, i.e., preserving and developing the ecosystem services. This study was based on semi-structured interviews carried out with 14 different stakeholders within the forest sector. The data is analysed using a theoretical framework focused on collaborative governance to comprehend the criteria of a successful participation process to achieve collective learning and environmentally friendly outcomes. The main findings were that, in general, individual stakeholders perceive the participatory process of GI as mainly informational rather than deliberative. New knowledge exchange and collective learning has been missing, these results could be caused by the limits in resources and the timeframe of the entire process. Despite the GI plan documents are finalised, it does not mean the participation as a process should be finished because it may limit the realisation of activities that foster GI across Scania’s landscape. This study adds an in-depth analysis of stakeholders’ perceptions and experiences of the creation of GI. Moreover, it underscores what criteria are required to have successful outcomes for an inclusive governance of forest resources.

Doctoral Degree. University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban.Community pharmaceutical Small to medium enterprises (SMEs) play a key role the world over and for South Africa, their role is more felt as the sector contributes to employment creation as well as boosting the gross domestic product. While they play such a key role, these community pharmaceutical SMEs often face insurmountable sustainability challenges ultimately undermining their growth and profitability. This study focuses on the community pharmaceutical SMEs of South Africa, following a published report by pharmaceutical boards that most community pharmacies were closing down or scaling down their operations due to sustainability challenges. The community pharmaceutical SMEs sector of South Africa is a significant business sector within the economy in terms of employment creations and poverty alleviation. Thus, the purpose of the study was to develop a sustainability framework for community pharmaceutical SMEs of South Africa in Gauteng province using a mixed research design with an online questionnaire of the quantitative study administered to 322 pharmacies selected through random sampling from a population of 1114 The qualitative design included in depth interviews conducted on 8 community pharmaceutical SME owners selected through purposive sampling. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS 24) was used to analyze the quantitative data while qualitative data were analyzed through thematic analysis and NVIVO 12 Pro. The findings revealed that managerial factors, policymaking (rules and regulations), harsh economic conditions, access to finance, medication price hikes and competition due to location were the most severe challenges hindering sustainability of SMEs in the Gauteng province of South Africa. In addition, strategy problem, lack of financial literacy and marketing as well as lack of financial background by owner and managers further hindered sustainability of community pharmacy. Drawing from these findings, the study recommended that an introduction to managerial courses would assist managers greatly on how to manage community pharmacies, additionally policy makers needs to look into location challenges of these community pharmacies to avoid price fixing and unwarranted competition. Moreover, an establishment of remissions and rebates together with relaxed borrowing regulations will open opportunity to access finance to boost growth and sustainability. It is further recommended that there is a need to introduce a financial management course that looks into enterprising at a master’s degree level for those that wish to get into business in order to circumvent lack of financial background which seems to be one of the major reasons why these community pharmacies were not sustainable. In closing, the study developed and recommended the use of a conceptual community pharmaceutical framework towards ensuring business sustainability

    Get PDF
Since its origin, health and wellness tourism has been related to the history of Portugal and Hungary, currently appearing as an undeniably strategic product for the development of tourism in both countries. The importance of this type of tourism is due to a set of circumstances imposed by contemporary life. Stress levels and working hours, as well as an increase in average life expectancy are some of the factors that converge to a greater concern with well-being issues, aided by an incessant search for happiness and for higher levels of quality of life. In this sense, health and wellness activities, promoted by the Thermal Baths and Spas, figures as means capable of meeting these current needs. The main objective of this thesis is to analyse the contribution of health and wellness tourism to the happiness and quality of life of thermal spas goers, based on a comparative study between Portugal and Hungary. The development of this thesis started from a theoretical basis, grounded on a review of the broad literature on the constructs under analysis, which contributed to the understanding of the use of the concepts of happiness and quality of life in the tourist context. This theoretical approach leveraged the construction of an investigation model and the definition of a set of hypotheses, tested through the results obtained from the empirical part developed throughout the study. The analysis was focused on the demand side, including health and wellness users and tourists in both countries, characterizing them in sociodemographic terms, observing their travel behaviour, assessing their satisfaction with the health and wellness experience, regarding the levels of happiness and quality of life obtained. This analysis is based on an empirical study developed over nine months, whose data were collected in a total of twelve Thermal Baths and Spas, six of them located in the Northern and Central regions of Portugal, and the other six located in the city of Budapest, in Hungary, providing a total of 753 valid responses. In the empirical study, a quantitative approach is made, using descriptive and multivariate statistical analysis, comparing the results obtained in both countries. This analysis allowed to demonstrate the potential of health and wellness tourism on the contribution to the happiness and quality of life of users, according to their different profiles. The main conclusions of the study allow to present a set of theoretical and practical implications for the development of health and wellness tourism in both countries, in a perspective of marketing, complemented with a set of proposals for future research in this area.O turismo de saúde e bem-estar esteve, desde a sua origem, relacionado com a história de Portugal, bem como com a da Hungria, afigurando-se atualmente como um produto assumidamente estratégico para o desenvolvimento do turismo em ambos os países. Historical and Conceptual Foundations of Information Physics

    Get PDF
The main objective of this dissertation is to philosophically assess how the use of informational concepts in the field of classical thermostatistical physics has historically evolved from the late 1940s to the present day. I will first analyze in depth the main notions that form the conceptual basis on which 'informational physics' historically unfolded, encompassing (i) different entropy, probability and information notions, (ii) their multiple interpretative variations, and (iii) the formal, numerical and semantic-interpretative relationships among them. In the following, I will assess the history of informational thermophysics during the second half of the twentieth century. Firstly, I analyse the intellectual factors that gave rise to this current in the late forties (i.e., popularization of Shannon's theory, interest in a naturalized epistemology of science, etc.), then study its consolidation in the Brillouinian and Jaynesian programs, and finally claim how Carnap (1977) and his disciples tried to criticize this tendency within the scientific community. Then, I evaluate how informational physics became a predominant intellectual current in the scientific community in the nineties, made possible by the convergence of Jaynesianism and Brillouinism in proposals such as that of Tribus and McIrvine (1971) or Bekenstein (1973) and the application of algorithmic information theory into the thermophysical domain. As a sign of its radicality at this historical stage, I explore the main proposals to include information as part of our physical reality, such as Wheeler’s (1990), Stonier’s (1990) or Landauer’s (1991), detailing the main philosophical arguments (e.g., Timpson, 2013; Lombardi et al. 2016a) against those inflationary attitudes towards information. Following this historical assessment, I systematically analyze whether the descriptive exploitation of informational concepts has historically contributed to providing us with knowledge of thermophysical reality via (i) explaining thermal processes such as equilibrium approximation, (ii) advantageously predicting thermal phenomena, or (iii) enabling understanding of thermal property such as thermodynamic entropy. I argue that these epistemic shortcomings would make it impossible to draw ontological conclusions in a justified way about the physical nature of information. In conclusion, I will argue that the historical exploitation of informational concepts has not contributed significantly to the epistemic progress of thermophysics. This would lead to characterize informational proposals as 'degenerate science' (à la Lakatos 1978a) regarding classical thermostatistical physics or as theoretically underdeveloped regarding the study of the cognitive dynamics of scientists in this physical domain
