    Fault-based Analysis of Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems

    The fourth industrial revolution called Industry 4.0 tries to bridge the gap between traditional Electronic Design Automation (EDA) technologies and the necessity of innovating in many indus- trial fields, e.g., automotive, avionic, and manufacturing. This complex digitalization process in- volves every industrial facility and comprises the transformation of methodologies, techniques, and tools to improve the efficiency of every industrial process. The enhancement of functional safety in Industry 4.0 applications needs to exploit the studies related to model-based and data-driven anal- yses of the deployed Industrial Cyber-Physical System (ICPS). Modeling an ICPS is possible at different abstraction levels, relying on the physical details included in the model and necessary to describe specific system behaviors. However, it is extremely complicated because an ICPS is com- posed of heterogeneous components related to different physical domains, e.g., digital, electrical, and mechanical. In addition, it is also necessary to consider not only nominal behaviors but even faulty behaviors to perform more specific analyses, e.g., predictive maintenance of specific assets. Nevertheless, these faulty data are usually not present or not available directly from the industrial machinery. To overcome these limitations, constructing a virtual model of an ICPS extended with different classes of faults enables the characterization of faulty behaviors of the system influenced by different faults. In literature, these topics are addressed with non-uniformly approaches and with the absence of standardized and automatic methodologies for describing and simulating faults in the different domains composing an ICPS. This thesis attempts to overcome these state-of-the-art gaps by proposing novel methodologies, techniques, and tools to: model and simulate analog and multi-domain systems; abstract low-level models to higher-level behavioral models; and monitor industrial systems based on the Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) paradigm. Specifically, the proposed contributions involve the exten- sion of state-of-the-art fault injection practices to improve the ICPSs safety, the development of frameworks for safety operations automatization, and the definition of a monitoring framework for ICPSs. Overall, fault injection in analog and digital models is the state of the practice to en- sure functional safety, as mentioned in the ISO 26262 standard specific for the automotive field. Starting from state-of-the-art defects defined for analog descriptions, new defects are proposed to enhance the IEEE P2427 draft standard for analog defect modeling and coverage. Moreover, dif- ferent techniques to abstract a transistor-level model to a behavioral model are proposed to speed up the simulation of faulty circuits. Therefore, unlike the electrical domain, there is no extensive use of fault injection techniques in the mechanical one. Thus, extending the fault injection to the mechanical and thermal fields allows for supporting the definition and evaluation of more reliable safety mechanisms. Hence, a taxonomy of mechanical faults is derived from the electrical domain by exploiting the physical analogies. Furthermore, specific tools are built for automatically instru- menting different descriptions with multi-domain faults. The entire work is proposed as a basis for supporting the creation of increasingly resilient and secure ICPS that need to preserve functional safety in any operating context

    Computer aided modeling and simulation of complex systems, using components from multiple application domains, such as electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, control, etc., have in recent years witness0065d a significant growth of interest. In the last decade, novel equation-based object-oriented (EOO) modeling languages, (e.g. Mode- lica, gPROMS, and VHDL-AMS) based on acausal modeling using equations have appeared. Using such languages, it has become possible to model complex systems covering multiple application domains at a high level of abstraction through reusable model components. The interest in EOO languages and tools is rapidly growing in the industry because of their increasing importance in modeling, simulation, and specification of complex systems. There exist several different EOO language communities today that grew out of different application areas (multi-body system dynamics, electronic circuit simula- tion, chemical process engineering). The members of these disparate communities rarely talk to each other in spite of the similarities of their modeling and simulation needs. The EOOLT workshop series aims at bringing these different communities together to discuss their common needs and goals as well as the algorithms and tools that best support them. Despite the short deadlines and the fact that this is a new not very established workshop series, there was a good response to the call-for-papers. Thirteen papers and one presentation were accepted to the workshop program. All papers were subject to reviews by the program committee, and are present in these electronic proceedings. The workshop program started with a welcome and introduction to the area of equa- tion-based object-oriented languages, followed by paper presentations and discussion sessions after presentations of each set of related papers. On behalf of the program committee, the Program Chairmen would like to thank all those who submitted papers to EOOLT'2007.     An Enhanced Hardware Description Language Implementation for Improved Design-Space Exploration in High-Energy Physics Hardware Design

    Detectors in High-Energy Physics (HEP) have increased tremendously in accuracy, speed and integration. Consequently HEP experiments are confronted with an immense amount of data to be read out, processed and stored. Originally low-level processing has been accomplished in hardware, while more elaborate algorithms have been executed on large computing farms. Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) meet HEP's need for ever higher real-time processing performance by providing programmable yet fast digital logic resources. With the fast move from HEP Digital Signal Processing (DSPing) applications into the domain of FPGAs, related design tools are crucial to realise the potential performance gains. This work reviews Hardware Description Languages (HDLs) in respect to the special needs present in the HEP digital hardware design process. It is especially concerned with the question, how features outside the scope of mainstream digital hardware design can be implemented efficiently into HDLs. It will argue that functional languages are especially suitable for implementation of domain-specific languages, including HDLs. Casestudies examining the implementation complexity of HEP-specific language extensions to the functional HDCaml HDL will prove the viability of the suggested approach

    A Holistic Approach to Functional Safety for Networked Cyber-Physical Systems

    Functional safety is a significant concern in today's networked cyber-physical systems such as connected machines, autonomous vehicles, and intelligent environments. Simulation is a well-known methodology for the assessment of functional safety. Simulation models of networked cyber-physical systems are very heterogeneous relying on digital hardware, analog hardware, and network domains. Current functional safety assessment is mainly focused on digital hardware failures while minor attention is devoted to analog hardware and not at all to the interconnecting network. In this work we believe that in networked cyber-physical systems, the dependability must be verified not only for the nodes in isolation but also by taking into account their interaction through the communication channel. For this reason, this work proposes a holistic methodology for simulation-based safety assessment in which safety mechanisms are tested in a simulation environment reproducing the high-level behavior of digital hardware, analog hardware, and network communication. The methodology relies on three main automatic processes: 1) abstraction of analog models to transform them into system-level descriptions, 2) synthesis of network infrastructures to combine multiple cyber-physical systems, and 3) multi-domain fault injection in digital, analog, and network. Ultimately, the flow produces a homogeneous optimized description written in C++ for fast and reliable simulation which can have many applications. The focus of this thesis is performing extensive fault simulation and evaluating different functional safety metrics, \eg, fault and diagnostic coverage of all the safety mechanisms

    Efficient Modelling and Simulation Methodology for the Design of Heterogeneous Mixed-Signal Systems on Chip

    Systems on Chip (SoCs) and Systems in Package (SiPs) are key parts of a continuously broadening range of products, from chip cards and mobile phones to cars. Besides an increasing amount of digital hardware and software for data processing and storage, they integrate more and more analogue/RF circuits, sensors, and actuators to interact with their (analogue) environment. This trend towards more complex and heterogeneous systems with more intertwined functionalities is made possible by the continuous advances in the manufacturing technologies and pushed by market demand for new products and product variants. Therefore, the reuse and retargeting of existing component designs becomes more and more important. However, all these factors make the design process increasingly complex and multidisciplinary. Nowadays, the design of the individual components is usually well understood and optimised through the usage of a diversity of CAD/EDA tools, design languages, and data formats. These are based on applying specific modelling/abstraction concepts, description formalisms (also called Models of Computation (MoCs)) and analysis/simulation methods. The designer has to bridge the gaps between tools and methodologies using manual conversion of models and proprietary tool couplings/integrations, which is error-prone and time-consuming. A common design methodology and platform to manage, exchange, and collaboratively develop models of different formats and of different levels of abstraction is missing. The verification of the overall system is a big problem, as it requires the availability of compatible models for each component at the right level of abstraction to achieve satisfying results with respect to the system functionality and test coverage, but at the same time acceptable simulation performance in terms of accuracy and speed. Thus, the big challenge is the parallel integration of these very different part design processes. Therefore, the designers need a common design and simulation platform to create and refine an executable specification of the overall system (a virtual prototype) on a high level of abstraction, which supports different MoCs. This makes possible the exploration of different architecture options, estimation of the performance, validation of re-used parts, verification of the interfaces between heterogeneous components and interoperability with other systems as well as the assessment of the impacts of the future working environment and the manufacturing technologies used to realise the system. For embedded Analogue and Mixed-Signal (AMS) systems, the C++-based SystemC with its AMS extensions, to which recent standardisation the author contributed, is currently establishing itself as such a platform. This thesis describes the author's contribution to solve the modelling and simulation challenges mentioned above in three thematic phases. In the first phase, the prototype of a web-based platform to collect models from different domains and levels of abstraction together with their associated structural and semantical meta information has been developed and is called ModelLib. This work included the implementation of a hierarchical access control mechanism, which is able to protect the Intellectual Property (IP) constituted by the model at different levels of detail. The use cases developed for this tool show how it can support the AMS SoC design process by fostering the reuse and collaborative development of models for tasks like architecture exploration, system validation, and creation of more and more elaborated models of the system. The experiences from the ModelLib development delivered insight into which aspects need to be especially addressed throughout the development of models to make them reusable: mainly flexibility, documentation, and validation. This was the starting point for the development of an efficient modelling methodology for the top-down design and bottom-up verification of RF Systems based on the systematic usage of behavioural models in the second phase. One outcome is the developed library of well documented, parameterisable, and pin-accurate VHDL-AMS models of typical analogue/digital/RF components of a transceiver. The models offer the designer two sets of parameters: one based on the performance specifications and one based on the device parameters back-annotated from the transistor-level implementation. The abstraction level used for the description of the respective analogue/digital/RF component behaviour has been chosen to achieve a good trade-off between accuracy, fidelity, and simulation performance. The pin-accurate model interfaces facilitate the integration of transistor-level models for the validation of the behavioural models or the verification of a component implementation in the system context. These properties make the models suitable for different design tasks such as architecture exploration or overall system validation. This is demonstrated on a model of a binary Frequency-Shift Keying (FSK) transmitter parameterised to meet very different target specifications. This project showed also the limits in terms of abstraction and simulation performance of the "classical" AMS Hardware Description Languages (HDLs). Therefore, the third and last phase was dedicated to further raise the abstraction level for the description of complex and heterogeneous AMS SoCs and thus enable their efficient simulation using different synchronised MoCs. This work uses the C++-based simulation framework SystemC with its AMS extensions. New modelling capabilities going beyond the standardised SystemC AMS extensions have been introduced to describe energy conserving multi-domain systems in a formal and consistent way at a high level of abstraction. To this end, all constants, variables, and parameters of the system model, which represent a physical quantity, can now declare their dimension and associated system of units as an intrinsic part of their data type. Assignments to them need to contain besides the value also the correct measurement unit. This allows a much more precise but still compact definition of the models' interfaces and equations. Thus, the C++ compiler can check the correct assembly of the components and the coherency of the equations by means of dimensional analysis. The implementation is based on the Boost.Units library, which employs template metaprogramming techniques. A dedicated filter for the measurement units data types has been implemented to simplify the compiler messages and thus facilitate the localisation of unit errors. To ensure the reusability of models despite precisely defined interfaces, their interfaces and behaviours need to be parametrisable in a well-defined manner. The enabling implementation techniques for this have been demonstrated with the developed library of generic block diagram component models for the Timed Data Flow (TDF) MoC of the SystemC AMS extensions. These techniques are also the key to integrate a new MoC based on the bond graph formalism into the SystemC AMS extensions. Bond graphs facilitate the unified description of the energy conserving parts of heterogeneous systems with the help of a small set of modelling primitives parametrisable to the physical domain. The resulting models have a simulation performance comparable to an equivalent signal flow model

    Compiling dataflow graphs into hardware

A reconfigurable processor is "programmed" by specifying the interconnections between hardware components, thereby creating a "hardwired" system to do the particular task. For some applications such as image processing, reconfigurable processors can produce dramatic execution speedups. However, programming a reconfigurable processor is essentially a hardware design discipline, making programming difficult for application programmers who are only familiar with software design techniques. To bridge this gap, a programming language, called SA-C (Single Assignment C, pronounced "sassy"), has been designed for programming reconfigurable processors. The process involves two main steps - first, the SA-C compiler analyzes the input source code and produces a hardware-independent intermediate representation of the program, called a dataflow graph (DFG). Secondly, this DFG is combined with hardware-specific information to create the final configuration. This dissertation describes the design and implementation of a system that performs the DFG to hardware translation. The DFG is broken up into three sections: the data generators, the inner loop body, and the data collectors. The second of these, the inner loop body, is used to create a computational structure that is unique for each program. The other two sections are implemented by using prebuilt modules, parameterized for the particular problem. Finally, a "glue module" is created to connect the various pieces into a complete interconnection specification. The dissertation also explores optimizations that can be applied while processing the DFG, to improve performance. A technique for pipelining the inner loop body is described that uses an estimation tool for the propagation delay of the nodes within the dataflow graph. A scheme is also described that identifies subgraphs with the dataflow graph that can be replaced with lookup tables. The lookup tables provide a faster implementation than random logic in some instances

    Circuit-level modelling and simulation of carbon nanotube devices

    The growing academic interest in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a promising novel class of electronic materials has led to significant progress in the understanding of CNT physics including ballistic and non-ballistic electron transport characteristics. Together with the increasing amount of theoretical analysis and experimental studies into the properties of CNT transistors, the need for corresponding modelling techniques has also grown rapidly. This research is focused on the electron transport characteristics of CNT transistors, with the aim to develop efficient techniquesto model and simulate CNT devices for logic circuit analysis.The contributions of this research can be summarised as follows. Firstly, to accelerate the evaluation of the equations that model a CNT transistor, while maintaining high modelling accuracy, three efficient numerical techniques based on piece-wise linear, quadratic polynomial and cubic spline approximation have been developed. The numerical approximation simplifies the solution of the CNT transistor’s self-consistent voltage such that the calculation of the drain-source current is accelerated by at least two orders of magnitude. The numerical approach eliminates complicated calculations in the modelling process and facilitates the development of fast and efficient CNT transistor models for circuit simulation.Secondly, non-ballistic CNT transistors have been considered, and extended circuit-level models which can capture both ballistic and non-ballistic electron transport phenomena, including elastic scattering, phonon scattering, strain and tunnelling effects, have been developed. A salient feature of the developed models is their ability to incorporate both ballistic and non-ballistic transport mechanisms without a significant computational cost. The developed models have been extensively validated against reported transport theories of CNT transistors and experimental results.Thirdly, the proposed carbon nanotube transistor models have been implemented on several platforms. The underlying algorithms have been developed and tested in MATLAB, behaviourallevel models in VHDL-AMS, and improved circuit-level models have been implemented in two versions of the SPICE simulator. As the final contribution of this work, parameter variation analysis has been carried out in SPICE3 to study the performance of the proposed circuit-level CNT transistor models in logic circuit analysis. Typical circuits, including inverters and adders, have been analysed to determine the dependence of the circuit’s correct operation on CNT parameter variation

    Formale Verifikationsmethodiken fĂĽr nichtlineare analoge Schaltungen

    The objective of this thesis is to develop new methodologies for formal verification of nonlinear analog circuits. Therefore, new approaches to discrete modeling of analog circuits, specification of analog circuit properties and formal verification algorithms are introduced. Formal approaches to verification of analog circuits are not yet introduced into industrial design flows and still subject to research. Formal verification proves specification conformance for all possible input conditions and all possible internal states of a circuit. Automatically proving that a model of the circuit satisfies a declarative machine-readable property specification is referred to as model checking. Equivalence checking proves the equivalence of two circuit implementations. Starting from the state of the art in modeling analog circuits for simulation-based verification, discrete modeling of analog circuits for state space-based formal verification methodologies is motivated in this thesis. In order to improve the discrete modeling of analog circuits, a new trajectory-directed partitioning algorithm was developed in the scope of this thesis. This new approach determines the partitioning of the state space parallel or orthogonal to the trajectories of the state space dynamics. Therewith, a high accuracy of the successor relation is achieved in combination with a lower number of states necessary for a discrete model of equal accuracy compared to the state-of-the-art hyperbox-approach. The mapping of the partitioning to a discrete analog transition structure (DATS) enables the application of formal verification algorithms. By analyzing digital specification concepts and the existing approaches to analog property specification, the requirements for a new specification language for analog properties have been discussed in this thesis. On the one hand, it shall meet the requirements for formal specification of verification approaches applied to DATS models. On the other hand, the language syntax shall be oriented on natural language phrases. By synthesis of these requirements, the analog specification language (ASL) was developed in the scope of this thesis. The verification algorithms for model checking, that were developed in combination with ASL for application to DATS models generated with the new trajectory-directed approach, offer a significant enhancement compared to the state of the art. In order to prepare a transition of signal-based to state space-based verification methodologies, an approach to transfer transient simulation results from non-formal test bench simulation flows into a partial state space representation in form of a DATS has been developed in the scope of this thesis. As has been demonstrated by examples, the same ASL specification that was developed for formal model checking on complete discrete models could be evaluated without modifications on transient simulation waveforms. An approach to counterexample generation for the formal ASL model checking methodology offers to generate transition sequences from a defined starting state to a specification-violating state for inspection in transient simulation environments. Based on this counterexample generation, a new formal verification methodology using complete state space-covering input stimuli was developed. By conducting a transient simulation with these complete state space-covering input stimuli, the circuit adopts every state and transition that were visited during stimulus generation. An alternative formal verification methodology is given by retransferring the transient simulation responses to a DATS model and by applying the ASL verification algorithms in combination with an ASL property specification. Moreover, the complete state space-covering input stimuli can be applied to develop a formal equivalence checking methodology. Therewith, the equivalence of two implementations can be proven for every inner state of both systems by comparing the transient simulation responses to the complete-coverage stimuli of both circuits. In order to visually inspect the results of the newly introduced verification methodologies, an approach to dynamic state space visualization using multi-parallel particle simulation was developed. Due to the particles being randomly distributed over the complete state space and moving corresponding to the state space dynamics, another perspective to the system's behavior is provided that covers the state space and hence offers formal results. The prototypic implementations of the formal verification methodologies developed in the scope of this thesis have been applied to several example circuits. The acquired results for the new approaches to discrete modeling, specification and verification algorithms all demonstrate the capability of the new verification methodologies to be applied to complex circuit blocks and their properties.Gegenstand dieser Dissertation ist die Entwicklung neuer Methodiken zur formalen Verifikation nichtlinearer analoger elektronischer Schaltungen. Dazu werden im Rahmen dieser Arbeit entstandene neue Ansätze in den Bereichen verifikationsgerechte diskrete Modellierung analoger Schaltungen, Spezifikation analoger Schaltungseigenschaften und formale Verifikationsalgorithmen vorgestellt. Ausgehend vom Stand der Technik der Modellierung analoger Schaltungen für die simulationsbasierte Verifikation wird im Rahmen dieser Arbeit die diskrete Modellierung analoger Schaltungen für zustandsraumbasierte formale Verifikationsverfahren betrachtet. Dazu wurde ein neuer Ansatz zur diskreten Modellierung entwickelt, der die Aufteilungsstruktur anhand der Trajektorien der Vektorfelddynamik bestimmt. So wird eine hohe Genauigkeit der Nachfolgerrelation ermöglicht, woraus eine niedrigere Zahl an Zuständen für ein diskretes Modell gleicher Genauigkeit im Vergleich mit dem bisherigen Stand der Technik folgt. Die Abbildung der Trajektorien-gesteuerten Partitionierung auf eine diskrete analoge Transitionsstruktur (DATS) erlaubt die Anwendung von formalen Verifikationsalgorithmen. Die formale Spezifikation von Eigenschaften in ersten Ansätzen zum Model Checking analoger Schaltungen hat sich stark an den bestehenden temporallogischen Verfahren aus dem Bereich digitaler Hardware orientiert. Ausgehend von einer Analyse digitaler Spezifikationskonzepte und der bestehenden Ansätze für analoge Eigenschaften wurden Anforderungen an eine neue Spezifikationssprache in dieser Arbeit abgeleitet. Die aus diesen Anforderungen im Rahmen dieser Arbeit entwickelte analoge Spezifikationssprache "Analog Specification Language" (ASL) basiert auf einer natürlichsprachlichen Kapselung temporallogischer Operationen, die mit erweiterten Algorithmen zur Transitionspfadbestimmung, Durchführung von Berechnungen auf Zustandsparametern und Oszillationsbestimmung eine hohe Ausdrucksstärke analoger Eigenschaften mit einer anwenderfreundlichen Syntax kombinieren konnte. Die zusammen mit ASL entwickelten Model Checking-Verifikationsalgorithmen zur Auswertung von ASL-Spezifikationen auf einem mit dem Trajektorien-gesteuerten Diskretisierungsverfahren erzeugten DATS-Modell bilden eine wesentliche Erweiterung zum Stand der Technik. Um einen Übergang der Verifikation von signalbasierten zu zustandsraumbasierten Methodiken zu ermöglichen, wurde im Rahmen dieser Arbeit ein Ansatz entwickelt, der die Übertragung von transienten Simulationsergebnissen aus nicht-formalen Testbench-Simulationsumgebungen in eine partielle DATS-Zustandsraumdarstellung ermöglicht. Damit kann, wie anhand von Beispielen gezeigt werden konnte, die gleiche ASL-Spezifikation für Eigenschaften eines vollständigen diskreten Modells ohne Modifikation auch auf Simulationsergebnissen ausgewertet werden. Ein für das formale ASL-basierte Model Checking entwickelter Ansatz zur Erzeugung von Gegenbeispielen für als spezifikationsverletzend identifizierte Zustandsraumgebiete erlaubt es, Transitionsfolgen von einem definierten Startzustand zu einem spezifikationsverletzenden Zustand zu ermitteln. Auf Basis dieses Gegenbeispiel-Verfahrens wurde eine neue formale Eigenschaftsverifikationsmethodik mittels vollständig den Zustandsraum einer Schaltung abdeckenden Eingangsstimuli entwickelt. Die vollständig den Zustandsraum abdeckenden Eingangsstimuli bieten noch eine weitere Anwendungsmöglichkeit im Bereich des Äquivalenzvergleichs. Die im Rahmen dieser Arbeit entwickelte Methodik zum formalen Äquivalenzvergleich auf Basis der vollständig den Zustandsraum abdeckenden Eingangsstimuli ersetzt die anwenderdefinierten Eingangsstimuli durch die vollständig den Zustandsraum abdeckenden. So kann die Äquivalenz für jeden möglichen Zustand der zu vergleichenden Implementierungen anhand eines automatisierten Vergleichs der Simulationsergebnisse beider Implementierungen gezeigt werden. Um die Ergebnisse der neu eingeführten formalen Verifikationsmethodiken visuell zu untersuchen wurde ein Verfahren entwickelt, das den Zustandsraum und seine Dynamik mittels eines Partikel-Simulationsansatzes visualisiert. Da die Partikel über den gesamten Zustandsraum randomisiert verteilt werden und sich dann gemäß der Vektorfelddynamik fortbewegen, kann auch hier ein Einblick in das Systemverhalten gewonnen werden, der eine weitestgehend vollständige und somit formale Repräsentation des Zustandsraums bietet. Die prototypische Implementierung der im Rahmen dieser Arbeit entwickelten formalen Verifikationsmethodiken wurde auf zahlreiche Beispielschaltungen angewendet.     Virtual Prototyping Methodology for Power Automation Cyber-Physical-Systems

    In this thesis, the author proposes a circular system development model which considers all the stages in a typical development process for industrial systems. In particular, the present work shows that the use of virtual prototyping at early stages of the system development may reduce the overall design and verification effort by allowing the exploration of the complete system architecture, and uncovering integration issues early on. The modeling techniques of this research are based on VHDL-AMS, yet supporting other modeling languages such as C/C++, SPICE, and Verilog-AMS, together with integrated simulation tools. Contrasting with conventional approaches, it is shown that the proposed methodology is adapted for small-scale Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) design and verification thanks to the modularity and scalability of the modeling approach. The proposed modeling techniques enable seamlessly the CPS design together with the implementation of their subsystems. In particular, the contribution of this work improves the virtual prototyping approach that has been successfully used during the development of smart electrical sensors and monitoring equipment for high and medium voltage applications. The design of the measurement and self-calibration circuits of a medium voltage current sensor based on the Rogowski coil transducer is presented as an example. The proposed small-scale CPS design methodology based on virtual prototyping, namely VP-based design methodology, uses important theoretical concepts from layered design, component-based design, and platform-based design. These foundations are the basis to build a modeling methodology that provides a vehicle that can be used to improve system verification towards correct-by-design systems. The main contributions of this research are: the re-definition of the system development lifecycle by using a virtual prototyping methodology; the design and implementation of a model library that maximizes the reuse of computational models and their related IP; and a set of VHDL-AMS modeling guidelines established with the purpose of improving the modularity and scalability of virtual prototypes. These elements are key for supporting the introduction of virtual prototyping into industrial companies that can thoroughly profit from this approach, but cannot commit a specific team to the creation, support, and maintenance of computational models and its dedicated infrastructure. Thanks to the progressive nature of the proposed methodology, virtual prototypes can indeed be introduced with relatively low initial effort and enhanced over time. The presented methodology and its infrastructure may grow into a bidirectional communication medium between non-expert system designers (i.e. system architects and virtual integrators) and domain specialists such as mechanical designers, power electrical designers, embedded-electronics designers, and software designers. The proposed design methodology advocates the reduction of the CPS design complexity by the implementation of a meet-in-the-middle approach for system-level modeling. In this direction, the modeling techniques introduced in this work facilitate the architectural design space exploration, critical cross-domain variable analysis (especially important in the component interfaces), and system-level optimization and verification
