The Anhinga Project is developing an infrastructure that supports board range of collaborative systems running on small proximal wireless devices in ad-hoc networks. The core of Anhinga Infrastructure is a new method invocation technology called the Many-to-Many Invocation (M2MI). In this technology, every method invocation is broadcasted through the network and all the objects that implement the same method execute it. M2MI is layered on a new network protocol, Many-to-Many Protocol (M2MP), which is designed for broadcasting messages within small wireless devices in Ad hoc network. In this project, I will provide three different design patterns of M2MI-based collaborative systems, implement and simulate those designs in LAN environment, and compare the advantages and disadvantages of the M2MI-based solutions with RMI-based solutions of those three different problems, collaborative groupware, multiple participants chat system, and the distributed solution of shared resource allocation. This project has the following research concepts: a) Investigate the design pattern and model design of collaborative groupware; b) Investigate the JAVA design and implementation of the collaborative groupware; c) Investigate M2MI mechanism using in the three different problems in ad hoc environment; d) Investigate the architecture, mechanism and performance of the designs of the three problems and compare them with RMI based solution. Test will be performed while using varieties of M2MP packet

A Smart Architecture for Diabetic Patient Monitoring Using Machine Learning Algorithms

[EN] Continuous monitoring of diabetic patients improves their quality of life. The use of multiple technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), embedded systems, communication technologies, artificial intelligence, and smart devices can reduce the economic costs of the healthcare system. Different communication technologies have made it possible to provide personalized and remote health services. In order to respond to the needs of future intelligent e-health applications, we are called to develop intelligent healthcare systems and expand the number of applications connected to the network. Therefore, the 5G network should support intelligent healthcare applications, to meet some important requirements such as high bandwidth and high energy efficiency. This article presents an intelligent architecture for monitoring diabetic patients by using machine learning algorithms. The architecture elements included smart devices, sensors, and smartphones to collect measurements from the body. The intelligent system collected the data received from the patient, and performed data classification using machine learning in order to make a diagnosis. The proposed prediction system was evaluated by several machine learning algorithms, and the simulation results demonstrated that the sequential minimal optimization (SMO) algorithm gives superior classification accuracy, sensitivity, and precision compared to other algorithms.Rghioui, A.; Lloret, J.; Sendra, S.; Oumnad, A. Security and Privacy Issues in Wireless Mesh Networks: A Survey

This book chapter identifies various security threats in wireless mesh network (WMN). Keeping in mind the critical requirement of security and user privacy in WMNs, this chapter provides a comprehensive overview of various possible attacks on different layers of the communication protocol stack for WMNs and their corresponding defense mechanisms. First, it identifies the security vulnerabilities in the physical, link, network, transport, application layers. Furthermore, various possible attacks on the key management protocols, user authentication and access control protocols, and user privacy preservation protocols are presented. After enumerating various possible attacks, the chapter provides a detailed discussion on various existing security mechanisms and protocols to defend against and wherever possible prevent the possible attacks. Comparative analyses are also presented on the security schemes with regards to the cryptographic schemes used, key management strategies deployed, use of any trusted third party, computation and communication overhead involved etc. The chapter then presents a brief discussion on various trust management approaches for WMNs since trust and reputation-based schemes are increasingly becoming popular for enforcing security in wireless networks. A number of open problems in security and privacy issues for WMNs are subsequently discussed before the chapter is finally concluded.Comment: 62 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables. This chapter is an extension of the author's previous submission in arXiv submission: arXiv:1102.1226. There are some text overlaps with the previous submissio

Advanced Fade Countermeasures for DVB-S2 Systems in Railway Scenarios

    Get PDF
This paper deals with the analysis of advanced fade countermeasures for supporting DVB-S2 reception by mobile terminals mounted on high-speed trains. Recent market studies indicate this as a potential profitable market for satellite communications, provided that integration with wireless terrestrial networks can be implemented to bridge the satellite connectivity inside railway tunnels and large train stations. In turn, the satellite can typically offer the coverage of around 80% of the railway path with existing space infrastructure. This piece of work, representing the first step of a wider study, is focusing on the modifications which may be required in the DVB-S2 standard (to be employed in the forward link) in order to achieve reliable reception in a challenging environment such as the railway one. Modifications have been devised trying to minimize the impact on the existing air interface, standardized for fixed terminals

‘Australia Speaks’: Reactions to Political Opinion Polls in Australia 1941-1943

    Get PDF
Political opinion polls came to Australia in the first years of World War Two. Their entry into the political arena caused much discussion about the role of the polls and about their creators. Despite the best efforts of the pollsters the early reaction was one of suspicion and outright aggression. This paper investigates the critical first two years and the debates that took place between the pollsters and the government

Intelligent Algorithm for Enhancing MPEG-DASH QoE in eMBMS

[EN] Multimedia streaming is the most demanding and bandwidth hungry application in today¿s world of Internet. MPEG-DASH as a video technology standard is designed for delivering live or on-demand streams in Internet to deliver best quality content with the fewest dropouts and least possible buffering. Hybrid architecture of DASH and eMBMS has attracted a great attention from the telecommunication industry and multimedia services. It is deployed in response to the immense demand in multimedia traffic. However, handover and limited available resources of the system affected on dropping segments of the adaptive video streaming in eMBMS and it creates an adverse impact on Quality of Experience (QoE), which is creating trouble for service providers and network providers towards delivering the service. In this paper, we derive a case study in eMBMS to approach to provide test measures evaluating MPEG-DASH QoE, by defining the metrics are influenced on QoE in eMBMS such as bandwidth and packet loss then we observe the objective metrics like stalling (number, duration and place), buffer length and accumulative video time. Moreover, we build a smart algorithm to predict rate of segments are lost in multicast adaptive video streaming. The algorithm deploys an estimation decision regards how to recover the lost segments. According to the obtained results based on our proposal algorithm, rate of lost segments is highly decreased by comparing to the traditional approach of MPEG-DASH multicast and unicast for high number of users. This work has been partially supported by the Postdoctoral Scholarship Contratos Postdoctorales UPV 2014 (PAID-10-14) of the Universitat Politècnica de València , by the Programa para la Formación de Personal Investigador (FPI-2015-S2-884) of the Universitat Politècnica de València , by the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad , through the Convocatoria 2014.
