    Integrating Capacitated Lot-Sizing and Lot Streaming in Flowshop Schedules with Time Varying Demand

    Any reasonable production planning contains three important decisions on lot size, lead time, and capacity. The common approach in the literature is to divide the planning problem into lot sizing, lot sequencing, and lot splitting sub-problems. Very few studies, to the best of our knowledge, have been conducted on the interdependencies and three- way interaction of lead-time, lot size, and actual capacity usage. A particular lot size calculated by the sub-problem method, however, will likely yield an infeasible solution or at least result in schedule instability (nervousness). This is just because in most capacitated lot sizing models, the capacity constraints in the model only take into consideration the available time on each work station, ignoring the sequencing of lots, sublot sizes, and their effect on makespan and lead times. In this thesis we bridge the gap between lot sizing and scheduling in flowshops, and examine the use of the lot splitting and sequencing techniques to reduce schedule instability. A mixed integer programming formulation is presented, which enables us to simultaneously find the optimal lot sizes as well as the corresponding sublot sizes and sequence of jobs. With this model, small size problems can be solved within a reasonable time. The computational results confirm that this model can be advantageous in dampening the scheduling nervousness. For larger size instances, a Genetic algorithm is proposed

    Trajectory Scheduling Methods for minimizing total tardiness in a flowshop

    AbstractIn this paper, Trajectory Scheduling Methods (TSMs) are proposed for the permutation flowshop scheduling problem with total tardiness minimization criterion. TSMs belong to an iterative local search framework, in which local search is performed on an initial solution, a perturbation operator is deployed to improve diversification, and a restart point mechanism is used to select the new start point of another cycle. In terms of the insertion and swap neighborhood structures, six composite heuristics are introduced, which exploit the search space with a strong intensification effect. Based on purely insertion-based or swap-based perturbation structures, three compound perturbation structures are developed that construct a candidate restart point set rather than just a single restart point. The distance between the current best solution and each start point of the set is defined, according to which the diversification effect of TSMs can be boosted by choosing the most appropriate restart point for the next iteration. A total of 18 trajectory scheduling methods are constructed by different combinations of composite heuristics. Both the best and worst combinations are compared with three best existing sequential meta-heuristics for the considered problem on 540 benchmark instances. Experimental results show that the proposed heuristics significantly outperform the three best existing algorithms within the same computation time

    Bounded dynamic programming approach to minimize makespan in the blocking flowshop problem with sequence dependent setup times

    This paper aims at presenting an algorithm for solving the blocking flow shop problem with sequence dependent setup times (BFSP-SDST) with minimization of the makespan. In order to do so, we propose an adapted Bounded Dynamic Programming (BDP-SN) algorithm as solution method, since the problem itself does not present a significant number of sources in the state-of-art references and also because Dynamic Programming and its variants have been resurfacing in the flowshop literature. Therefore, we apply the modified method to two sets of problems and compare the results computationally and statistically for instances with a MILP and a B&B method for at most 20 jobs and 20 machines. The results show that BDP-SN is promising and outperforms both MILP and B&B within the established time limit. In addition, some suggestions are made in order to improve the method and employ it in parallel research regarding other branches of machine scheduling

    Benchmarking Permutation Flow Shop Problem: Adaptive and Enumerative Approaches Implementations via Novel Threading Techniques

    A large number of real-world planning problems are combinatorial optimization problems which are easy to state and have a finite but usually very large number of feasible solutions. The minimum spanning tree problem and the shortest path problem are some which are solvable through polynomial algorithms. Even though there are other problems such as crew scheduling, vehicle routing, production planning, and hotel room operations which have no properties such as to solve the problem with polynomial algorithms. All these problems are NP-hard. The permutation flow shop problem is also NP-hard problem and they require high computation. These problems are solvable as in the form of the optimal and near-optimal solution. Some approach to get optimal are exhaustive search and branch and bound whereas near optimal are achieved annealing, Genetic algorithm, and other various methods. We here have used different approach exhaustive search, branch and bound and genetic algorithm. We optimize these algorithms to get performance in time as well as get the result closer to optimal. The exhaustive search and branch and bound gives all possible optimal solutions. We here have shown the comparative result of optimal calculation for 10 jobs with varying machine number up to 20. The genetic algorithm scales up and gives results to the instances with a larger number of jobs and machines

    Makespan Minimization in Re-entrant Permutation Flow Shops

    Re-entrant permutation flow shop problems occur in practical applications such as wafer manufacturing, paint shops, mold and die processes and textile industry. A re-entrant material flow means that the production jobs need to visit at least one working station multiple times. A comprehensive review gives an overview of the literature on re-entrant scheduling. The influence of missing operations received just little attention so far and splitting the jobs into sublots was not examined in re-entrant permutation flow shops before. The computational complexity of makespan minimization in re-entrant permutation flow shop problems requires heuristic solution approaches for large problem sizes. The problem provides promising structural properties for the application of a variable neighborhood search because of the repeated processing of jobs on several machines. Furthermore the different characteristics of lot streaming and their impact on the makespan of a schedule are examined in this thesis and the heuristic solution methods are adjusted to manage the problem’s extension

    Design of a solution technique based on an integral approach for the Flexible Open-Flow Shop scheduling problem

    In manufacturing industries, scheduling is a form of decision-making that plays a crucial role. The determination of the methods by which a set of jobs must be manufactured in order to seek specific goals leads to the development of different schedule techniques. However, scheduling depends on the type of workshop or manufacturing environment such as open shop, job shop and flow shop. There are cases that more than one environment for the same manufacturing process could coexist. This project deals with a specific scheduling problem in which each job is processed under the combination of two shop environments; the first one is related to an open shop while the second one corresponds to a flow shop; this problem is called the Flexible open-flow shop (FOFS). These types of scheduling problems present NP-hardness, meaning the neediness of sophisticated algorithms to find solutions in reasonable computational times. Additionally, are commonly solved separately or by approximating into another workshop, leaving the interaction of both environments irrelevant.     New Solution Approaches for Scheduling Problems in Production and Logistics

    The current cumulative PhD thesis consists of six papers published in/submitted to scientific journals. The focus of the thesis is to develop new solution approaches for scheduling problems encountering in manufacturing as well as in logistics. The thesis is divided into two parts: “ma-chine scheduling in production” and “scheduling problems in logistics” each of them consisting three papers. To have most comprehensive overview of the topic of machine scheduling, the first part of the thesis starts with two systematic review papers, which were conducted on tertiary level (i.e., re-viewing literature reviews). Both of these papers analyze a sample of around 130 literature re-views on machine scheduling problems. The first paper use a subjective quantitative approach to evaluate the sample, while the second papers uses content analysis which is an objective quanti-tative approach to extract meaningful information from massive data. Based on the analysis, main attributes of scheduling problems in production are identified and are classified into sever-al categories. Although the focus of both these papers are set to review scheduling problems in manufacturing, the results are not restricted to machine scheduling problem and the results can be extended to the second part of the thesis. General drawbacks of literature reviews are identi-fied and several suggestions for future researches are also provided in both papers. The third paper in the first part of the thesis presents the results of 105 new heuristic algorithms developed to minimize total flow time of a set of jobs in a flowshop manufacturing environ-ment. The computational experiments confirm that the best heuristic proposed in this paper im-proves the average error of best existing algorithm by around 25 percent. The first paper in second part is focused on minimizing number of electric tow-trains responsi-ble to deliver spare parts from warehouse to the production lines. Together with minimizing number of these electric vehicles the paper is also focused to maximize the work load balance among the drivers of the vehicles. For this problem, after analyzing the complexity of the prob-lem, an opening heuristic, a mixed integer linear programing (MILP) model and a taboo-search neighborhood search approach are proposed. Several managerial insights, such as the effect of battery capacity on the number of required vehicles, are also discussed. The second paper of the second part addresses the problem of preparing unit loaded devices (ULDs) at air cargos to be loaded latter on in planes. The objective of this problem is to mini-mize number of workers required in a way that all existing flight departure times are met and number of available places for building ULDs is not violated. For this problem, first, a MILP model is proposed and then it is boosted with a couple of heuristics which enabled the model to find near optimum solutions in a matter of 10 seconds. The paper also investigates the inherent tradeoff between labor and space utilization as well as the uncertainty about the volume of cargo to be processed. The last paper of the second part proposes an integrated model to improve both ergonomic and economic performance of manual order picking process by rotating pallets in the warehouse. For the problem under consideration in this paper, we first present and MILP model and then pro-pose a neighborhood search based on simulated annealing. The results of numerical experiment indicate that selectively rotating pallets may reduce both order picking time as well as the load on order picker, which leads to a quicker and less risky order picking process

    From metaheuristics to learnheuristics: Applications to logistics, finance, and computing

    Un gran nombre de processos de presa de decisions en sectors estratègics com el transport i la producció representen problemes NP-difícils. Sovint, aquests processos es caracteritzen per alts nivells d'incertesa i dinamisme. Les metaheurístiques són mètodes populars per a resoldre problemes d'optimització difícils en temps de càlcul raonables. No obstant això, sovint assumeixen que els inputs, les funcions objectiu, i les restriccions són deterministes i conegudes. Aquests constitueixen supòsits forts que obliguen a treballar amb problemes simplificats. Com a conseqüència, les solucions poden conduir a resultats pobres. Les simheurístiques integren la simulació a les metaheurístiques per resoldre problemes estocàstics d'una manera natural. Anàlogament, les learnheurístiques combinen l'estadística amb les metaheurístiques per fer front a problemes en entorns dinàmics, en què els inputs poden dependre de l'estructura de la solució. En aquest context, les principals contribucions d'aquesta tesi són: el disseny de les learnheurístiques, una classificació dels treballs que combinen l'estadística / l'aprenentatge automàtic i les metaheurístiques, i diverses aplicacions en transport, producció, finances i computació.Un gran número de procesos de toma de decisiones en sectores estratégicos como el transporte y la producción representan problemas NP-difíciles. Frecuentemente, estos problemas se caracterizan por altos niveles de incertidumbre y dinamismo. Las metaheurísticas son métodos populares para resolver problemas difíciles de optimización de manera rápida. Sin embargo, suelen asumir que los inputs, las funciones objetivo y las restricciones son deterministas y se conocen de antemano. Estas fuertes suposiciones conducen a trabajar con problemas simplificados. Como consecuencia, las soluciones obtenidas pueden tener un pobre rendimiento. Las simheurísticas integran simulación en metaheurísticas para resolver problemas estocásticos de una manera natural. De manera similar, las learnheurísticas combinan aprendizaje estadístico y metaheurísticas para abordar problemas en entornos dinámicos, donde los inputs pueden depender de la estructura de la solución. En este contexto, las principales aportaciones de esta tesis son: el diseño de las learnheurísticas, una clasificación de trabajos que combinan estadística / aprendizaje automático y metaheurísticas, y varias aplicaciones en transporte, producción, finanzas y computación.A large number of decision-making processes in strategic sectors such as transport and production involve NP-hard problems, which are frequently characterized by high levels of uncertainty and dynamism. Metaheuristics have become the predominant method for solving challenging optimization problems in reasonable computing times. However, they frequently assume that inputs, objective functions and constraints are deterministic and known in advance. These strong assumptions lead to work on oversimplified problems, and the solutions may demonstrate poor performance when implemented. Simheuristics, in turn, integrate simulation into metaheuristics as a way to naturally solve stochastic problems, and, in a similar fashion, learnheuristics combine statistical learning and metaheuristics to tackle problems in dynamic environments, where inputs may depend on the structure of the solution. The main contributions of this thesis include (i) a design for learnheuristics; (ii) a classification of works that hybridize statistical and machine learning and metaheuristics; and (iii) several applications for the fields of transport, production, finance and computing
