    Improving water network management by efficient division into supply clusters

    El agua es un recurso escaso que, como tal, debe ser gestionado de manera eficiente. Así, uno de los propósitos de dicha gestión debiera ser la reducción de pérdidas de agua y la mejora del funcionamiento del abastecimiento. Para ello, es necesario crear un marco de trabajo basado en un conocimiento profundo de la redes de distribución. En los casos reales, llegar a este conocimiento es una tarea compleja debido a que estos sistemas pueden estar formados por miles de nodos de consumo, interconectados entre sí también por miles de tuberías y sus correspondientes elementos de alimentación. La mayoría de las veces, esas redes no son el producto de un solo proceso de diseño, sino la consecuencia de años de historia que han dado respuesta a demandas de agua continuamente crecientes con el tiempo. La división de la red en lo que denominaremos clusters de abastecimiento, permite la obtención del conocimiento hidráulico adecuado para planificar y operar las tareas de gestión oportunas, que garanticen el abastecimiento al consumidor final. Esta partición divide las redes de distribución en pequeñas sub-redes, que son virtualmente independientes y están alimentadas por un número prefijado de fuentes. Esta tesis propone un marco de trabajo adecuado en el establecimiento de vías eficientes tanto para dividir la red de abastecimiento en sectores, como para desarrollar nuevas actividades de gestión, aprovechando esta estructura dividida. La propuesta de desarrollo de cada una de estas tareas será mediante el uso de métodos kernel y sistemas multi-agente. El spectral clustering y el aprendizaje semi-supervisado se mostrarán como métodos con buen comportamiento en el paradigma de encontrar una red sectorizada que necesite usar el número mínimo de válvulas de corte.     FAULT DETECTION AND DATA PREDICTION FOR WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS

    In the last few years, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been extensively used as a pervasive sensing module of Ambient Intelligence (AmI) systems in several application fields, thanks to their versatility and ability to monitor diverse environmental quantities. Although wireless sensor nodes are able to perform onboard computations and to share the sensed data, they are limited by the scarcity of energy resources which heavily influences the network lifetime; moreover, the design phase of a WSN requires testing the application scalability prior to actual deployment. In this regard, this dissertation focuses on data prediction to address such crucial tasks as prolonging the network lifetime and testing the WSN scalability. Nevertheless, the matter is particularly challenging as the real world measurements are influenced by unpredictable events that affect the sensor readings. To this aim, fault detection techniques help to identify corrupt measurements and to discard them before they are actually transmitted within the network, so they may be profitably used to improve the precision of the prediction models. This dissertation describes the design of two software modules which address fault detection and data prediction and may be combined in a single software system for WSNs. The fault detection submodule classifies the sensed measurements as “corrupt” or “regular” by means of Bayesian Inference. The prediction submodule builds models for the monitored quantities and is also able to generalize them to unknown environments populated by virtual sensor nodes so it allows to test the scalability of the application for networks of different sizes. Prediction also allows sensor nodes to reduce their energy consumption as much as possible by fine tuning their sampling rate based on the accuracy of the predictors. Experimental results show the capabilities of the proposed system to detect faults and to build reliable prediction models for some of the most common physical quantities for WSNs, namely light exposure, temperature and humidity

    Robust and secure resource management for automotive cyber-physical systems

    2022 Spring.Includes bibliographical references.Modern vehicles are examples of complex cyber-physical systems with tens to hundreds of interconnected Electronic Control Units (ECUs) that manage various vehicular subsystems. With the shift towards autonomous driving, emerging vehicles are being characterized by an increase in the number of hardware ECUs, greater complexity of applications (software), and more sophisticated in-vehicle networks. These advances have resulted in numerous challenges that impact the reliability, security, and real-time performance of these emerging automotive systems. Some of the challenges include coping with computation and communication uncertainties (e.g., jitter), developing robust control software, detecting cyber-attacks, ensuring data integrity, and enabling confidentiality during communication. However, solutions to overcome these challenges incur additional overhead, which can catastrophically delay the execution of real-time automotive tasks and message transfers. Hence, there is a need for a holistic approach to a system-level solution for resource management in automotive cyber-physical systems that enables robust and secure automotive system design while satisfying a diverse set of system-wide constraints. ECUs in vehicles today run a variety of automotive applications ranging from simple vehicle window control to highly complex Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) applications. The aggressive attempts of automakers to make vehicles fully autonomous have increased the complexity and data rate requirements of applications and further led to the adoption of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) based techniques for improved perception and control. Additionally, modern vehicles are becoming increasingly connected with various external systems to realize more robust vehicle autonomy. These paradigm shifts have resulted in significant overheads in resource constrained ECUs and increased the complexity of the overall automotive system (including heterogeneous ECUs, network architectures, communication protocols, and applications), which has severe performance and safety implications on modern vehicles. The increased complexity of automotive systems introduces several computation and communication uncertainties in automotive subsystems that can cause delays in applications and messages, resulting in missed real-time deadlines. Missing deadlines for safety-critical automotive applications can be catastrophic, and this problem will be further aggravated in the case of future autonomous vehicles. Additionally, due to the harsh operating conditions (such as high temperatures, vibrations, and electromagnetic interference (EMI)) of automotive embedded systems, there is a significant risk to the integrity of the data that is exchanged between ECUs which can lead to faulty vehicle control. These challenges demand a more reliable design of automotive systems that is resilient to uncertainties and supports data integrity goals. Additionally, the increased connectivity of modern vehicles has made them highly vulnerable to various kinds of sophisticated security attacks. Hence, it is also vital to ensure the security of automotive systems, and it will become crucial as connected and autonomous vehicles become more ubiquitous. However, imposing security mechanisms on the resource constrained automotive systems can result in additional computation and communication overhead, potentially leading to further missed deadlines. Therefore, it is crucial to design techniques that incur very minimal overhead (lightweight) when trying to achieve the above-mentioned goals and ensure the real-time performance of the system. We address these issues by designing a holistic resource management framework called ROSETTA that enables robust and secure automotive cyber-physical system design while satisfying a diverse set of constraints related to reliability, security, real-time performance, and energy consumption. To achieve reliability goals, we have developed several techniques for reliability-aware scheduling and multi-level monitoring of signal integrity. To achieve security objectives, we have proposed a lightweight security framework that provides confidentiality and authenticity while meeting both security and real-time constraints. We have also introduced multiple deep learning based intrusion detection systems (IDS) to monitor and detect cyber-attacks in the in-vehicle network. Lastly, we have introduced novel techniques for jitter management and security management and deployed lightweight IDSs on resource constrained automotive ECUs while ensuring the real-time performance of the automotive systems

    Using MapReduce Streaming for Distributed Life Simulation on the Cloud

    Distributed software simulations are indispensable in the study of large-scale life models but often require the use of technically complex lower-level distributed computing frameworks, such as MPI. We propose to overcome the complexity challenge by applying the emerging MapReduce (MR) model to distributed life simulations and by running such simulations on the cloud. Technically, we design optimized MR streaming algorithms for discrete and continuous versions of Conway’s life according to a general MR streaming pattern. We chose life because it is simple enough as a testbed for MR’s applicability to a-life simulations and general enough to make our results applicable to various lattice-based a-life models. We implement and empirically evaluate our algorithms’ performance on Amazon’s Elastic MR cloud. Our experiments demonstrate that a single MR optimization technique called strip partitioning can reduce the execution time of continuous life simulations by 64%. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to propose and evaluate MR streaming algorithms for lattice-based simulations. Our algorithms can serve as prototypes in the development of novel MR simulation algorithms for large-scale lattice-based a-life models.https://digitalcommons.chapman.edu/scs_books/1014/thumbnail.jp

    Data-driven remote fault detection and diagnosis of HVAC terminal units using machine learning techniques

    The modernising and retrofitting of older buildings has created a drive to install building management systems (BMS) aimed to assist building managers pave the way towards smarter energy use, improve maintenance and increase occupants comfort inside a building. BMS is a computerised control system that controls and monitors a building’s equipment, services such as lighting, ventilation, power systems, fire and security systems, etc. Buildings are becoming more and more complex environments and energy consumption has globally increased to 40% in the past decades. Still, there is no generalised solution or standardisation method available to maintain and handle a building’s energy consumption. Thus this research aims to discover an intelligent solution for the building’s electrical and mechanical units that consume the most power. Indeed, remote control and monitoring of Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) units based on the received information through the thousands of sensors and actuators, is a crucial task in BMS. Thus, it is a foremost task to identify faulty units automatically to optimise running and energy usage. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis on HVAC data and the development of computational intelligent methods for automatic fault detection and diagnosis is been presented here for a period of July 2015 to October 2015 on a real commercial building in London. This study mainly investigated one of the HVAC sub-units namely Fan-coil unit’s terminal unit (TU). It comprises of the three stages: data collection, pre-processing, and machine learning. Further to the aspects of machine learning algorithms for TU behaviour identification by employing unsupervised, supervised, and semi-supervised learning algorithms and their combination was employed to make an automatic intelligent solution for building services. The accuracy of these employed algorithms have been measured in both training and testing phases, results compared with different suitable algorithms, and validated through statistical measures. This research provides an intelligent solution for the real time prediction through the development of an effective automatic fault detection and diagnosis system creating a smarter way to handle the BMS data for energy optimisation

    Real-Time Sensor Networks and Systems for the Industrial IoT

    The Industrial Internet of Things (Industrial IoT—IIoT) has emerged as the core construct behind the various cyber-physical systems constituting a principal dimension of the fourth Industrial Revolution. While initially born as the concept behind specific industrial applications of generic IoT technologies, for the optimization of operational efficiency in automation and control, it quickly enabled the achievement of the total convergence of Operational (OT) and Information Technologies (IT). The IIoT has now surpassed the traditional borders of automation and control functions in the process and manufacturing industry, shifting towards a wider domain of functions and industries, embraced under the dominant global initiatives and architectural frameworks of Industry 4.0 (or Industrie 4.0) in Germany, Industrial Internet in the US, Society 5.0 in Japan, and Made-in-China 2025 in China. As real-time embedded systems are quickly achieving ubiquity in everyday life and in industrial environments, and many processes already depend on real-time cyber-physical systems and embedded sensors, the integration of IoT with cognitive computing and real-time data exchange is essential for real-time analytics and realization of digital twins in smart environments and services under the various frameworks’ provisions. In this context, real-time sensor networks and systems for the Industrial IoT encompass multiple technologies and raise significant design, optimization, integration and exploitation challenges. The ten articles in this Special Issue describe advances in real-time sensor networks and systems that are significant enablers of the Industrial IoT paradigm.
