    Modelling, Simulation and Verification of 4-phase Adiabatic Logic Design: A VHDL-Based Approach

    The design and functional verification of the 4-phase adiabatic logic implementation take longer due to the complexity of synchronizing the power-clock phases. Additionally, as the adiabatic system scales, the amount of time in debugging errors increases, thus, increasing the overall design and verification time. This paper proposes a VHDL-based modelling approach for speeding up the design and verification time of the 4-phase adiabatic logic systems. The proposed approach can detect the functional errors, allowing the designer to correct them at an early design stage, leading to substantial reduction of the design and debugging time. The originality of this approach lies in the realization of the trapezoidal power-clock using function declaration for the four periods namely; Evaluation (E), Hold (H), Recovery (R) and Idle (I) exclusively. The four periods are defined in a VHDL package followed by a library design which contains the behavioral VHDL model of adiabatic NOT/BUF logic gate. Finally, this library is used to model and verify the structural VHDL representations of the 4-phase 2-bit ring-counter and 3-bit up-down counter, as design examples to demonstrate the practicality of the proposed approach

    The DS-Pnet modeling formalism for cyber-physical system development

    This work presents the DS-Pnet modeling formalism (Dataflow, Signals and Petri nets), designed for the development of cyber-physical systems, combining the characteristics of Petri nets and dataflows to support the modeling of mixed systems containing both reactive parts and data processing operations. Inheriting the features of the parent IOPT Petri net class, including an external interface composed of input and output signals and events, the addition of dataflow operations brings enhanced modeling capabilities to specify mathematical data transformations and graphically express the dependencies between signals. Data-centric systems, that do not require reactive controllers, are designed using pure dataflow models. Component based model composition enables reusing existing components, create libraries of previously tested components and hierarchically decompose complex systems into smaller sub-systems. A precise execution semantics was defined, considering the relationship between dataflow and Petri net nodes, providing an abstraction to define the interface between reactive controllers and input and output signals, including analog sensors and actuators. The new formalism is supported by the IOPT-Flow Web based tool framework, offering tools to design and edit models, simulate model execution on the Web browser, plus model-checking and software/hardware automatic code generation tools to implement controllers running on embedded devices (C,VHDL and JavaScript). A new communication protocol was created to permit the automatic implementation of distributed cyber-physical systems composed of networks of remote components communicating over the Internet. The editor tool connects directly to remote embedded devices running DS-Pnet models and may import remote components into new models, contributing to simplify the creation of distributed cyber-physical applications, where the communication between distributed components is specified just by drawing arcs. Several application examples were designed to validate the proposed formalism and the associated framework, ranging from hardware solutions, industrial applications to distributed software applications

    STRICT: a language and tool set for the design of very large scale integrated circuits

    PhD ThesisAn essential requirement for the design of large VLSI circuits is a design methodology which would allow the designer to overcome the complexity and correctness issues associated with the building of such circuits. We propose that many of the problems of the design of large circuits can be solved by using a formal design notation based upon the functional programming paradigm, that embodies design concepts that have been used extensively as the framework for software construction. The design notation should permit parallel, sequential, and recursive decompositions of a design into smaller components, and it should allow large circuits to be constructed from simpler circuits that can be embedded in a design in a modular fashion. Consistency checking should be provided as early as possible in a design. Such a methodology would structure the design of a circuit in much the same way that procedures, classes, and control structures may be used to structure large software systems. However, such a design notation must be supported by tools which automatically check the consistency of the design, if the methodology is to be practical. In principle, the methodology should impose constraints upon circuit design to reduce errors and provide' correctness by construction' . It should be possible to generate efficient and correct circuits, by providing a route to a large variety of design tools commonly found in design systems: simulators, automatic placement and routing tools, module generators, schematic capture tools, and formal verification and synthesis tools

    From stateflow simulation to verified implementation: A verification approach and a real-time train controller design

    Simulink is widely used for model driven development (MDD) of industrial software systems. Typically, the Simulink based development is initiated from Stateflow modeling, followed by simulation, validation and code generation mapped to physical execution platforms. However, recent industrial trends have raised the demands of rigorous verification on safety-critical applications, which is unfortunately challenging for Simulink. In this paper, we present an approach to bridge the Stateflow based model driven development and a well- defined rigorous verification. First, we develop a self- contained toolkit to translate Stateflow model into timed automata, where major advanced modeling features in Stateflow are supported. Taking advantage of the strong verification capability of Uppaal, we can not only find bugs in Stateflow models which are missed by Simulink Design Verifier, but also check more important temporal properties. Next, we customize a runtime verifier for the generated nonintrusive VHDL and C code of Stateflow model for monitoring. The major strength of the customization is the flexibility to collect and analyze runtime properties with a pure software monitor, which opens more opportunities for engineers to achieve high reliability of the target system compared with the traditional act that only relies on Simulink Polyspace. We incorporate these two parts into original Stateflow based MDD seamlessly. In this way, safety-critical properties are both verified at the model level, and at the consistent system implementation level with physical execution environment in consideration. We apply our approach on a train controller design, and the verified implementation is tested and deployed on a real hardware platform

    Adiabatic Approach for Low-Power Passive Near Field Communication Systems

    This thesis tackles the need of ultra-low power electronics in the power limited passive Near Field Communication (NFC) systems. One of the techniques that has proven the potential of delivering low power operation is the Adiabatic Logic Technique. However, the low power benefits of the adiabatic circuits come with the challenges due to the absence of single opinion on the most energy efficient adiabatic logic family which constitute appropriate trade-offs between computation time, area and complexity based on the circuit and the power-clocking schemes. Therefore, five energy efficient adiabatic logic families working in single-phase, 2-phase and 4-phase power-clocking schemes were chosen. Since flip-flops are the basic building blocks of any sequential circuit and the existing flip-flops are MUX-based (having more transistors) design, therefore a novel single-phase, 2-phase and 4-phase reset based flip-flops were proposed. The performance of the multi-phase adiabatic families was evaluated and compared based on the design examples such as 2-bit ring counter, 3-bit Up-Down counter and 16-bit Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) circuit (benchmark circuit) based on ISO 14443-3A standard. Several trade-offs, design rules, and an appropriate range for the supply voltage scaling for multi-phase adiabatic logic are proposed. Furthermore, based on the NFC standard (ISO 14443-3A), data is frequently encoded using Manchester coding technique before transmitting it to the reader. Therefore, if Manchester encoding can be implemented using adiabatic logic technique, energy benefits are expected. However, adiabatic implementation of Manchester encoding presents a challenge. Therefore, a novel method for implementing Manchester encoding using adiabatic logic is proposed overcoming the challenges arising due to the AC power-clock. Other challenges that come with the dynamic nature of the adiabatic gates and the complexity of the 4-phase power-clocking scheme is in synchronizing the power-clock v phases and the time spent in designing, validation and debugging of errors. This requires a specific modelling approach to describe the adiabatic logic behaviour at the higher level of abstraction. However, describing adiabatic logic behaviour using Hardware Description Languages (HDLs) is a challenging problem due to the requirement of modelling the AC power-clock and the dual-rail inputs and outputs. Therefore, a VHDL-based modelling approach for the 4-phase adiabatic logic technique is developed for functional simulation, precise timing analysis and as an improvement over the previously described approaches

    Architecture and Control of a Digital Frequency-Locked Loop for Fine-Grain Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling in Globally Asynchronous Locally Synchronous Structures

    International audienceA small area fast-reprogrammable Digital Frequency-Locked Loop (DFLL) engine is presented as a solution for the Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) circuitry in Globally Asynchronous Locally Synchronous (GALS) architectures implemented in 32 nm CMOS technology. The DFLL control is designed so that the closed-loop system is able to cope with process variability while it rejects temperature changes and supply voltage slow variations. Therefore the DFLL is made of three main blocks, namely a Digitally Controlled Oscillator (DCO), a "sensor" that measures the frequency of the signal at the output of the DCO and a controller. A strong emphasis is set on the loop filter architecture choice and the tuning of its parameters. An analytical model of the DCO is deduced from accurate Spice simulations. The delay introduced by the sensor is also taken into account to design. From these models, an optimal and robust controller with a minimum implementation area is developed. Here, "optimal" means that the controller is computed via the minimization of a given criterion while the "robustness" capability ensures that the closed-loop system is tolerant to process and temperature variations in a given range. Therefore, performances of the closed-loop system are ensured whatever the system characteristics are in a given range

    Timing model derivation : pipeline analyzer generation from hardware description languages

    Safety-critical systems are forced to finish their execution within strict deadlines so that worst-case execution time (WCET) guarantees are a crucial part of their verification. Timing models of the analyzed hardware form the basis for static analysis-based approaches like the aiT WCET analyzer. Currently, timing models are hand-crafted based on frequently incorrect documentation causing the process to be error-prone and time-consuming. This thesis bridges the gap between automatic hardware synthesis and WCET analysis development by introducing a process for the derivation of timing models from VHDL specifications. We propose a set of transformations and abstractions to reduce the hardware design\u27s complexity enabling the generation of efficient and provably correct WCET analyzers. They employ an abstract interpretation-based simulation of program executions based on a defined abstract simulation semantics. We have defined workflow patterns showing how to gradually apply the derivation process to VHDL models, thereby removing timing-irrelevant constructs. Interval property checking is used to validate the transformations. A further contribution of this thesis is the implementation of a tool set that realizes the introduced derivation process and shows its applicability to non-trivial industrial designs in experimental evaluations. Influences on design choices to the quality of the derived timing model are presented building an informal predictability notion for VHDL.Sicherheits-kritische Systeme unterliegen oft der Einhaltung strikter Laufzeitschranken, weshalb zur Verifikation sichere Obergrenzen der Laufzeit im schlimmsten Fall (WCET) bestimmt werden. Zeitmodelle der analysierten Hardware sind hierbei die Grundlage für auf statischen Analysen basierende Verfahren. Aktuell werden solche Modelle händisch aus Handbüchern extrahiert, ein sehr zeitaufwändiger und fehleranfälliger Prozess. Diese Arbeit schlägt eine Brücke zwischen automatischer Hardware-Synthese und der Entwicklung von WCET-Analysen durch die Einführung eines Ableitungsprozesses von Zeitmodellen aus VHDL-Spezifikationen. Transformationen und Abstraktionen werden zur Komplexitätsreduktion eingesetzt, um die Erzeugung von effizienten und beweisbar korrekten Analysatoren zu ermöglichen. Selbige bedienen sich abstrakter Interpretation von Programmausführungen basierend auf einer Simulations-Semantik. Definierte Arbeitsabläufe zeigen, wie man die Ableitung schrittweise auf VHDL-Modellen umsetzt und dadurch für das Zeitverhalten irrelevante Teile des Modells entfernt. Interval Property Checking gewährleistet hierbei, dass die Transformationen semantik-erhaltend sind. Eine Tool-Implementierung realisiert den vorgestellen Ableitungsprozess und unterstreicht seine Anwendbarkeit auf komplexe industrielle Designs durch experimentelle untersuchungen.
