The Biological, Psychological, Cognitive, and Social Perspectives on Aging: The Design of a Healthy Aging Program for Older Adults

    Get PDF
Aging is an inevitable process, accompanied by changes in physiological, cognitive, psychological, and social facets. Researchers have investigated the physiological, cognitive, psychological, and social risk factors associated with aging and have encouraged the use of physical activity, cognitive training, and dietary interventions to alleviate risk factors. However, holistic programs dedicated to promoting successful aging among older adults are uncommon. This review sought to promote successful aging by identifying physiological, cognitive, psychological, and social risk factors that affect older adults and develop a comprehensive program to holistically mitigate these risk factors. Risk factors associated with unsuccessful aging include the development of chronic health conditions, declines in cognitive function, development of psychological disorders, and reductions in social activities. The goal of this program is to assist older adults in leading a well-balanced lifestyle by encouraging engagement in evidence-based interventions such as physical exercise, diet and nutrition, mindfulness meditation, yoga, mentally stimulating activities, and building interpersonal relationships to improve aging outcomes

Improving Health Outcomes and Lifestyle Choices in an Underserved Community Through the Implementation of a Wellness Program

    Get PDF
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to implement a wellness program with the purpose of bridging the gap in lifestyle and disease knowledge in a socioeconomically vulnerable mentally ill population. The participants were members of an adult day mental health facility which aided the local underserved population. The wellness program emphasized improving knowledge of chronic health conditions, healthy lifestyle habits and the practice of mindfulness meditation. Significance: The significance of this project is the advancement of health status via health education from a wellness perspective. Vulnerable populations who are at higher risk of chronic physical and mental illness can use the knowledge acquired to induce positive health changes from programs such as this. The knowledge imparted from this program can also serve to supplemental health education typically provided during a medical office visit. Methods: The methodology employed in this project included identification of a project initiative and audience, performance of a needs assessment, investigation of the current literature, incorporation of a theoretical framework, obtainment of organizational and stakeholder support, implementation of the project and lastly an evaluation process of the project. Project Outcomes: Participants benefited from the wellness program by receiving health and lifestyle education and mindfulness meditation techniques. Case Managers were confident that the project was useful to the needs of the population the facility served. Clinical Relevance: The project serves as a model for future wellness programs in similar facilities and towards creating informational sessions to supplement the health education provided in primary care and specialty medical practices

Oral application of L-menthol in the heat: From pleasure to performance

    Get PDF
When menthol is applied to the oral cavity it presents with a familiar refreshing sensation and cooling mint flavour. This may be deemed hedonic in some individuals, but may cause irritation in others. This variation in response is likely dependent upon trigeminal sensitivity toward cold stimuli, suggesting a need for a menthol solution that can be easily personalised. Menthol’s characteristics can also be enhanced by matching colour to qualitative outcomes; a factor which can easily be manipulated by practitioners working in athletic or occupational settings to potentially enhance intervention efficacy. This presentation will outline the efficacy of oral menthol application for improving time trial performance to date, either via swilling or via co-ingestion with other cooling strategies, with an emphasis upon how menthol can be applied in ecologically valid scenarios. Situations in which performance is not expected to be enhanced will also be discussed. An updated model by which menthol may prove hedonic, satiate thirst and affect ventilation will also be presented, with the potential performance implications of these findings discussed and modelled. Qualitative reflections from athletes that have implemented menthol mouth swilling in competition, training and maximal exercise will also be included

The Influence of Gene Environment Interaction on the Risk of Cognitive Impairment: Reducing Sexual Risk Behaviors and Alcohol Use in HIV-infected Adults

Memory deficits and executive dysfunction are highly prevalent among HIV-infected adults. These conditions can affect their quality of life, antiretroviral adherence, and HIV risk behaviors. Several factors have been suggested including the role of genetics in relation to HIV disease progression. This dissertation aimed to determine whether genetic differences in HIV-infected individuals were correlated with impaired memory, cognitive flexibility and executive function and whether cognitive decline moderated alcohol use and sexual transmission risk behaviors among HIV-infected alcohol abusers participating in an NIH-funded clinical trial comparing the efficacy of the adapted Holistic Health Recovery Program (HHRP-A) intervention to a Health Promotion Control (HPC) condition in reducing risk behaviors. A total of 267 individuals were genotyped for polymorphisms in the dopamine and serotonin gene systems. Results yielded significant associations for TPH2, GALM, DRD2 and DRD4 genetic variants with impaired executive function, cognitive flexibility and memory. SNPs TPH2 rs4570625 and DRD2 rs6277 showed a risk association with executive function (odds ratio = 2.5, p = .02; 3.6, p = .001). GALM rs6741892 was associated with impaired memory (odds ratio = 1.9, p = .006). At the six-month follow-up, HHRP-A participants were less likely to report trading sex for food, drugs and money (20.0%) and unprotected insertive or receptive oral (11.6%) or vaginal and/or anal sex (3.2%) than HPC participants (49.4%,

COMSI®—A Form of Treatment That Offers an Opportunity to Play, Communicate and Become Socially Engaged through the Lens of Nature—A Single Case Study about an 8-Year-Old Boy with Autism and Intellectual Disability

This case study shows how an 8-year-old boy with autism and mild intellectual disability underwent positive psychological development in terms of play, social communication, and mentalization during a year and a half of group-based therapy using COMSI®-(COMmunication and Social Interaction). This eclectic treatment has a relational approach and is based on developmental psychology, knowledge of autism, and the impact of nature and animals on human health. The change in the child was been studied using both quantitative and qualitative methods. His general intellectual capacity was measured using the Wechler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, and his Mentalization Ability/Theory of Mind was assessed using three tests: Eva and Anna, Hiding the fruit and Kiki and the cat. Throughout the study period, change was documented with the help of the therapists’ process notes and the parents’ descriptions. The results show that support for the child comes from three different sources: nature, animals, and the therapists. Animals and nature form the basis for episodes of coordinated attention in conversation and play with therapists. The therapists’ approach used sensitivity and compliance with the child’s needs and focus of interest
