    CAREER: Framework for Integrating Embedded Sensors in Durability Analysis of FRP Composites in Civil Infrastructure

    The CAREER proposal will develop a framework to characterize durability of composites in civil infrastructure by integrating fiber-optic embedded sensors with damage mechanics models and life prediction methods. To tackle this problem, a combined analytical and experimental methodology is proposed, as follows: 1) Integrate embedded sensors in composites fabrication by VARTM and filament winding; 2) Implement strain, temperature, moisture and chemical degradation fiber-optic sensors; 3) Evaluate the embedded sensor system with controlled damage; 4) Develop a damage mechanics model and life-prediction methodology for durability analysis based on interrogating senors; 5) Assess reliability of sensor data and scale to composite structures (bridge decks and pipe walls); and 6) Validate the durability methodology and synthesize into a health-monitoring protocol. The educational approach is two-fold encompassing student recruitment and advanced graduate education. First, and educational collaboration is being developed with an applied technology center at a high school in Maine. The objective is to introduce high school students to the engineering experience by collaborating with civil engineering juniors in a composite bridge design and fabrication project.     Supervision and monitoring of the student’s research is a great task that lecturers of higher learning institution always face. The research takes the bull by the horn by researching on how to bring the system into existence in their domain. Achieving the said task will surely ease the tasks being face during the supervision of the research students to the viva level. This research adopts the system development technique in software engineering to achieve the goal and evaluate the prototype by using statistical package for social sciences version 16. The result shows that the research supervision system for Awang Had Salleh Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in University Utara is efficient, ease to use and eradicate the difficulties being faced in supervising the student’s project or thesis

    Embedding literacy skills in design curriculum

    This paper discusses a collaborative curriculum development process undertaken by a cross-disciplinary team comprising of academic staff from Industrial Design Engineering and the Learning Skills Unit (LSU). The collaboration has led firstly to the development and implementation of an innovative Academic Literacy Skills Resource Book. Secondly, Academic Literacy Skills were incorporated into the Design and Engineering curriculum offered by the School of Engineering at one Australian university. The collaboration started in 2003 and continues into 2007. The Industrial Design academics mapped and prioritised the graduate attributes and skills that students need across their university career and identified the most appropriate subjects in which to locate these skills. They identified the need to develop a comprehensive academic skills experience for their students as well as the academic skills required for successful completion of each subject and the major final year project. Perhaps one of the more significant aspects of this collaboration with the LSU was the embedding of academic skills within the discipline rather than being taught as generic skills the students then need to transfer to specific subjects. In 2004, the academics from the LSU and Industrial Design jointly piloted the program with a first year core subject delivered within the Industrial Design and Design & Technology courses. In 2005 and 2006, the relationship between LSU and Engineering and Industrial Design academics was further developed. This collaboration led to the development of a first year core subject Engineering and Industrial Design Practice (EIDP) with a comprehensive academic skills resource book, integrated guest lectures and the training and monitoring of peer mentors for the compulsory peer mentoring component of the subject as key aspects of a subject focussed around a team project

    This article provides an overview of the Collaboration to Advance Teaching Technology and Science (CATTS) program and the conditions necessary to establish and maintain partnerships that promote inquiry and research in schools. These programs are effective because they benefit all stakeholders. CATTS creates opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students (the CATTS Fellows) to learn effective teaching practices and to be active participants in K-12 education. School districts and University of Arizona outreach programs benefit when CATTS Fellows work on projects that address identified educational needs in K-12 schools.     This repository item contains an annual report that summarizes activities of the Boston University Photonics Center in the 2015-2016 academic year. The report provides quantitative and descriptive information regarding photonics programs in education, interdisciplinary research, business innovation, and technology development. The Boston University Photonics Center (BUPC) is an interdisciplinary hub for education, research, scholarship, innovation, and technology development associated with practical uses of light.This has been a good year for the Photonics Center. In the following pages, you will see that this year the Center’s faculty received prodigious honors and awards, generated more than 100 notable scholarly publications in the leading journals in our field, and attracted $18.9M in new research grants/contracts. Faculty and staff also expanded their efforts in education and training, and cooperated in supporting National Science Foundation sponsored Sites for Research Experiences for Undergraduates and for Research Experiences for Teachers. As a community, we emphasized the theme of “Frontiers in Plasmonics as Enabling Science in Photonics and Beyond” at our annual symposium, hosted by Bjoern Reinhard. We continued to support the National Photonics Initiative, and contributed as a cooperating site in the American Institute for Manufacturing Integrated Photonics (AIM Photonics) which began this year as a new photonics-themed node in the National Network of Manufacturing Institutes. Highlights of our research achievements for the year include an ambitious new DoD-sponsored grant for Development of Less Toxic Treatment Strategies for Metastatic and Drug Resistant Breast Cancer Using Noninvasive Optical Monitoring led by Professor Darren Roblyer, continued support of our NIH-sponsored, Center for Innovation in Point of Care Technologies for the Future of Cancer Care led by Professor Cathy Klapperich, and an exciting confluence of new grant awards in the area of Neurophotonics led by Professors Christopher Gabel, Timothy Gardner, Xue Han, Jerome Mertz, Siddharth Ramachandran, Jason Ritt, and John White. Neurophotonics is fast becoming a leading area of strength of the Photonics Center. The Industry/University Collaborative Research Center, which has become the centerpiece of our translational biophotonics program, continues to focus onadvancing the health care and medical device industries, and has entered its sixth year of operation with a strong record of achievement and with the support of an enthusiastic industrial membership base

    Business Process Management Education in Academia: Status, challenges, and Recommendations

    In response to the growing proliferation of Business Process Management (BPM) in industry and the demand this creates for BPM expertise, universities across the globe are at various stages of incorporating knowledge and skills in their teaching offerings. However, there are still only a handful of institutions that offer specialized education in BPM in a systematic and in-depth manner. This article is based on a global educators’ panel discussion held at the 2009 European Conference on Information Systems in Verona, Italy. The article presents the BPM programs of five universities from Australia, Europe, Africa, and North America, describing the BPM content covered, program and course structures, and challenges and lessons learned. The article also provides a comparative content analysis of BPM education programs illustrating a heterogeneous view of BPM. The examples presented demonstrate how different courses and programs can be developed to meet the educational goals of a university department, program, or school. This article contributes insights on how best to continuously sustain and reshape BPM education to ensure it remains dynamic, responsive, and sustainable in light of the evolving and ever-changing marketplace demands for BPM expertise
