Motion compensation and very low bit rate video coding
Recently, many activities of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the International Standard Organization (ISO) are leading to define new standards for very low bit-rate video coding, such as H.263 and MPEG-4 after successful applications of the international standards H.261 and MPEG-1/2 for video coding above 64kbps. However, at very low bit-rate the classic block matching based DCT video coding scheme suffers seriously from blocking artifacts which degrade the quality of reconstructed video frames considerably. To solve this problem, a new technique in which motion compensation is based on dense motion field is presented in this dissertation.
Four efficient new video coding algorithms based on this new technique for very low bit-rate are proposed. (1) After studying model-based video coding algorithms, we propose an optical flow based video coding algorithm with thresh-olding techniques. A statistic model is established for distribution of intensity difference between two successive frames, and four thresholds are used to control the bit-rate and the quality of reconstructed frames. It outperforms the typical model-based techniques in terms of complexity and quality of reconstructed frames. (2) An efficient algorithm using DCT coded optical flow. It is found that dense motion fields can be modeled as the first order auto-regressive model, and efficiently compressed with DCT technique, hence achieving very low bit-rate and higher visual quality than the H.263/TMN5. (3) A region-based discrete wavelet transform video coding algorithm. This algorithm implements dense motion field and regions are segmented according to their content significance. The DWT is applied to residual images region by region, and bits are adaptively allocated to regions. It improves the visual quality and PSNR of significant regions while maintaining low bit-rate. (4) A segmentation-based video coding algorithm for stereo sequence. A correlation-feedback algorithm with Kalman filter is utilized to improve the accuracy of optical flow fields. Three criteria, which are associated with 3-D information, 2-D connectivity and motion vector fields, respectively, are defined for object segmentation. A chain code is utilized to code the shapes of the segmented objects. it can achieve very high compression ratio up to several thousands
Detail Enhancing Denoising of Digitized 3D Models from a Mobile Scanning System
The acquisition process of digitizing a large-scale environment produces an enormous amount of raw geometry data. This data is corrupted by system noise, which leads to 3D surfaces that are not smooth and details that are distorted. Any scanning system has noise associate with the scanning hardware, both digital quantization errors and measurement inaccuracies, but a mobile scanning system has additional system noise introduced by the pose estimation of the hardware during data acquisition. The combined system noise generates data that is not handled well by existing noise reduction and smoothing techniques.
This research is focused on enhancing the 3D models acquired by mobile scanning systems used to digitize large-scale environments. These digitization systems combine a variety of sensors – including laser range scanners, video cameras, and pose estimation hardware – on a mobile platform for the quick acquisition of 3D models of real world environments. The data acquired by such systems are extremely noisy, often with significant details being on the same order of magnitude as the system noise. By utilizing a unique 3D signal analysis tool, a denoising algorithm was developed that identifies regions of detail and enhances their geometry, while removing the effects of noise on the overall model.
The developed algorithm can be useful for a variety of digitized 3D models, not just those involving mobile scanning systems. The challenges faced in this study were the automatic processing needs of the enhancement algorithm, and the need to fill a hole in the area of 3D model analysis in order to reduce the effect of system noise on the 3D models. In this context, our main contributions are the automation and integration of a data enhancement method not well known to the computer vision community, and the development of a novel 3D signal decomposition and analysis tool. The new technologies featured in this document are intuitive extensions of existing methods to new dimensionality and applications. The totality of the research has been applied towards detail enhancing denoising of scanned data from a mobile range scanning system, and results from both synthetic and real models are presented
REGION-BASED ADAPTIVE DISTRIBUTED VIDEO CODING CODEC
The recently developed Distributed Video Coding (DVC) is typically suitable for the
applications where the conventional video coding is not feasible because of its
inherent high-complexity encoding. Examples include video surveillance usmg
wireless/wired video sensor network and applications using mobile cameras etc. With
DVC, the complexity is shifted from the encoder to the decoder.
The practical application of DVC is referred to as Wyner-Ziv video coding (WZ)
where an estimate of the original frame called "side information" is generated using
motion compensation at the decoder. The compression is achieved by sending only
that extra information that is needed to correct this estimation. An error-correcting
code is used with the assumption that the estimate is a noisy version of the original
frame and the rate needed is certain amount of the parity bits. The side information is
assumed to have become available at the decoder through a virtual channel. Due to
the limitation of compensation method, the predicted frame, or the side information, is
expected to have varying degrees of success. These limitations stem from locationspecific
non-stationary estimation noise. In order to avoid these, the conventional
video coders, like MPEG, make use of frame partitioning to allocate optimum coder
for each partition and hence achieve better rate-distortion performance. The same,
however, has not been used in DVC as it increases the encoder complexity.
This work proposes partitioning the considered frame into many coding units
(region) where each unit is encoded differently. This partitioning is, however, done at
the decoder while generating the side-information and the region map is sent over to
encoder at very little rate penalty. The partitioning allows allocation of appropriate
DVC coding parameters (virtual channel, rate, and quantizer) to each region. The
resulting regions map is compressed by employing quadtree algorithm and
communicated to the encoder via the feedback channel. The rate control in DVC is
performed by channel coding techniques (turbo codes, LDPC, etc.). The performance
of the channel code depends heavily on the accuracy of virtual channel model that models estimation error for each region. In this work, a turbo code has been used and
an adaptive WZ DVC is designed both in transform domain and in pixel domain. The
transform domain WZ video coding (TDWZ) has distinct superior performance as
compared to the normal Pixel Domain Wyner-Ziv (PDWZ), since it exploits the

spatial redundancy during the encoding. The performance evaluations show that the
proposed system is superior to the existing distributed video coding solutions.
Although the, proposed system requires extra bits representing the "regions map" to be
transmitted, fuut still the rate gain is noticeable and it outperforms the state-of-the-art
frame based DVC by 0.6-1.9 dB.
The feedback channel (FC) has the role to adapt the bit rate to the changing

statistics between the side infonmation and the frame to be encoded. In the
unidirectional scenario, the encoder must perform the rate control. To correctly
estimate the rate, the encoder must calculate typical side information. However, the
rate cannot be exactly calculated at the encoder, instead it can only be estimated. This
work also prbposes a feedback-free region-based adaptive DVC solution in pixel
domain based on machine learning approach to estimate the side information.
Although the performance evaluations show rate-penalty but it is acceptable
considering the simplicity of the proposed algorithm.

Nonrigid reconstruction of 3D breast surfaces with a low-cost RGBD camera for surgical planning and aesthetic evaluation
Accounting for 26% of all new cancer cases worldwide, breast cancer remains
the most common form of cancer in women. Although early breast cancer has a
favourable long-term prognosis, roughly a third of patients suffer from a
suboptimal aesthetic outcome despite breast conserving cancer treatment.
Clinical-quality 3D modelling of the breast surface therefore assumes an
increasingly important role in advancing treatment planning, prediction and
evaluation of breast cosmesis. Yet, existing 3D torso scanners are expensive
and either infrastructure-heavy or subject to motion artefacts. In this paper
we employ a single consumer-grade RGBD camera with an ICP-based registration
approach to jointly align all points from a sequence of depth images
non-rigidly. Subtle body deformation due to postural sway and respiration is
successfully mitigated leading to a higher geometric accuracy through
regularised locally affine transformations. We present results from 6 clinical
cases where our method compares well with the gold standard and outperforms a
previous approach. We show that our method produces better reconstructions
qualitatively by visual assessment and quantitatively by consistently obtaining
lower landmark error scores and yielding more accurate breast volume estimates

Implementing video compression algorithms on reconfigurable devices
The increasing density offered by Field Programmable Gate Arrays(FPGA), coupled with their short design cycle, has made them a popular choice for implementing a wide range of algorithms and complete systems. In this thesis the implementation of video compression algorithms on FPGAs is studied. Two areas are specifically focused on; the integration of a video encoder into a complete
system and the power consumption of FPGA based video encoders.
Two FPGA based video compression systems are described, one which targets surveillance applications and one which targets video conferencing applications. The FPGA video surveillance system makes use of a novel memory format to
improve the efficiency with which input video sequences can be loaded over the system bus.
The power consumption of a FPGA video encoder is analyzed. The results indicating that the motion estimation encoder stage requires the most power consumption. An algorithm, which reuses the intra prediction results generated during the encoding process, is then proposed to reduce the power consumed on an FPGA video encoder’s external memory bus. Finally, the power reduction algorithm is implemented within an FPGA video encoder. Results are given showing that, in addition to reducing power on the external memory bus, the algorithm also reduces power in the motion estimation stage of a FPGA based video encoder
The efficient use of data from different sources for production and application of digital elevation models
The emphasis of the investigation reported in this thesis is on the use of digital elevation data of two resolutions originating from two different sources. The high resolution DEM was captured from aerial photographs (first source) at a scale of 1:30,000 and the low resolution DEM was captured from SPOT images (second source). It is well known that the resolution of DEM data depends a great deal on the scale of the images used. The technique for capturing DEMs is static measurement of the spot heights in a regular grid. The grid spacing of the high resolution DEM was 30 m, and of the low resolution DEM was 100 m. The aims of this thesis are as follows: 1. To assess the feasibility of using SPOT stereodata as a source of height information and merged with data from aerial photography. This is carried out by comparison of the elevation data derived from SPOT with the digital elevation data derived from aerial photography. From the comparison of these two sources of height information, some results are derived which show the possible heighting accuracy levels which can realistically be achieved. A systematic error in the estimated average of the elevation differences was found and many tests have been carried out to find the reasons for the presence of this systematic error. 2. To develop methods to manipulate the captured data. 2.1. Gross error (blunder) detection. Blunders made during the data capturing procedure affect the accuracy of the final product. Therefore it is necessary to trap and to remove them. A pointwise local self-checking blunder detection algorithm was developed in order to check the grid elevation data, particularly those which are derived from the second source. 2.2. Data coordinates transformation. The data must be transformed into a common projection in order to be directly comparable. The projection and coordinate systems employed are studied in this project, and the errors caused by the transformations are estimated. 2.3. Data merging. Data of different reliability have to be merged into a single set of data. In this project data from two different sources are merged in order to create a final product of known and uniform accuracy. The effect of the lower resolution source on the high resolution source was studied, in dense and in sparse form. 2.4. Data structure. To structure the data by changing the format in order to be in an acceptable form for DEM creation and display, through the commercially available Laser-Scan package DTMCREATE. 3. DEM production and contouring. To produce DEMs from the initial data and that derived from the two merged sources, and to find the accuracy of the interpolation procedure by comparing the derived interpolated data with the high resolution DEM which has been derived from aerial photography. Finally to interpolate contours directly from the "raw" SPOT data and to compare them with those derived from the aerial photography in order to find out the feasibility and capability of using SPOT data in contouring for topographic maps
