The focus of the research was on the National Fire Protection Association\u27s (NFPA) codes and standards. The author of this IQP is a voting member of the NFPA Technical Committee on Fire and Emergency Services Protective Clothing and Equipment - Electronic Safety Equipment. This report identifies the role played by fire departments in delivering emergency medical service (EMS) care. Additionally, it outlines the applicability of existing NFPA standards on EMS vehicles and equipment. Finally, a literature review of codes and standards regarding personal protective equipment (PPE) for first responders was generated

    A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF INTERNET OF THINGS WAVEFORMS FOR A DOD LOW EARTH ORBIT CUBESAT MESH NETWORK

    The Department of Defense (DOD) requires the military to provide command and control during missions in locations where terrestrial communications infrastructure is unreliable or unavailable, which results in a high reliance on satellite communications (SATCOM). This is problematic because they use and consume more digital data in the operational environment. The DOD has several forms of data capable of meeting Internet of Things (IoT) transmission parameters that could be diversified onto an IoT network. This research assesses the potential for an IoT satellite constellation in Low Earth Orbit to provide an alternative, space-based communication platform to military units while offering increased overall SATCOM capacity and resiliency. This research explores alternative IoT waveforms and compatible transceivers in place of LoRaWAN for the NPS CENETIX Ortbial-1 CubeSat. The study uses a descriptive comparative research approach to simultaneously assess several variables. Five alternative waveforms—Sigfox, NB-IoT, LTE-M, Wi-sun, and Ingenu—are evaluated. NB-IoT, LTE-M, and Ingenu meet the threshold to be feasible alternatives to replace the LoRaWAN waveform in the Orbital-1 CubeSat. Six potential IoT transceivers are assessed as replacements. Two transceivers for the NB-IoT and LTE-M IoT waveforms and one transceiver from U-blox for the Ingenu waveform are assessed as compliant.Lieutenant, United States NavyApproved for public release.     The broad success of online social networks (OSNs) has created fertile soil for the emergence and fast spread of social spam. Fake news, malicious URL links, fraudulent advertisements, fake reviews, and biased propaganda are bringing serious consequences for both virtual social networks and human life in the real world. Effectively detecting social spam is a hot topic in both academia and industry. However, traditional social spam detection techniques are limited to centralized processing on top of one specific data source but ignore the social spam correlations of distributed data sources. Moreover, a few research efforts are conducting in integrating the stream system (e.g., Storm, Spark) with the large-scale social spam detection, but they typically ignore the specific details in managing and recovering interim states during the social stream data processing. We observed that social spammers who aim to advertise their products or post victim links are more frequently spreading malicious posts during a very short period of time. They are quite smart to adapt themselves to old models that were trained based on historical records. Therefore, these bring a question: how can we uncover and defend against these online spam activities in an online and scalable manner? In this dissertation, we present there systems that support scalable and online social spam detection from streaming social data: (1) the first part introduces Oases, a scalable system that can support large-scale online social spam detection, (2) the second part introduces a system named SpamHunter, a novel system that supports efficient online scalable spam detection in social networks. The system gives novel insights in guaranteeing the efficiency of the modern stream applications by leveraging the spam correlations at scale, and (3) the third part refers to the state recovery during social spam detection, it introduces a customizable state recovery framework that provides fast and scalable state recovery mechanisms for protecting large distributed states in social spam detection applications

    The study discussed the trajectory of the nexus between oil exports, socio-economic underdevelopment and United States’ (U.S.) trade relations with Nigeria. The resource curse thesis is adopted for the descriptive study while data is obtained from primary and secondary sources. The findings of the study show that Nigeria’s shift of attention from the production and exportation of all other sources of foreign exchange to the concentration of effort on exportation of crude oil destroyed the Nigerian economy and made the nation to be subject to inconsolable poverty. The study concluded that the economic underdevelopment which characterised Nigeria is in large measure a bi-product of oil trade between the U.S. and Nigeria

    THE NEXT GENERATION OF WILDLAND FIREFIGHTING TOOLS: USING UAV SWARMS FOR FIRE ATTACK

    Wildland fires pose a direct threat to homeland security because of the severe personal, economic, and social stress they cause to those affected. As unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarms become more ubiquitous in use, they will likely find a place as a frontline firefighting aerial asset, increasing the operational pace of aerial suppression flights and consequently increasing the safety of firefighters. This thesis explored the concept of using UAV swarms as a method for fire attack by comparing theoretical swarms to a conventional aerial asset within a realistic fire scenario and then using a systems engineering approach to define pressure points for implementing UAV swarms in the wildland space. The findings of this research support continued development of UAV swarms and clearly define areas that must be addressed before implementing large-scale UAV swarm flights. The firefighting UAV swarm system shows great promise due to its relative portability and ability to provide an aerial firefighting option to areas without ready access to conventional firefighting aircraft. It will be critical, however, to address logistical and communications constraints of UAV swarm systems before implementation to ensure positive outcomes.Civilian, Portland Fire and RescueApproved for public release.
