Decoupling Machine Intelligence from Application in IoT devices

    Get PDF
Currently, the most prominent model for developing intelligent applications for IoT devices is to have intelligence embedded into the application. This model is characterized by strong coupling between application logic and intelligence implementations in the code of the intelligent application. Alternatively, the intelligence can be taken out of the application and turned into a cloud service that application logic can utilize via standardized Web APIs. This model is characterized by weak coupling between application logic code and intelligence implementation. Strong coupling model makes lifecycle management of intelligence difficult. To update intelligence, usually the whole application must be updated. Cloud based weak coupling model also has multiple faults like the need for constant connectivity to the central cloud or data privacy concerns. In this thesis, local on-device weak coupling model for building intelligent applications and its prototype implementation are presented. The model is based on the concept of intelligent layer. Intelligent layer is a layer between operating system and application layer that provides intelligent services to the processes in application layer. Presented prototype implementation is called intelligence layer service. It is able to serve limited type of machine learning models represented by Open Neural Network Exchange (ONNX) format

A Cognitive Routing framework for Self-Organised Knowledge Defined Networks

    Get PDF
This study investigates the applicability of machine learning methods to the routing protocols for achieving rapid convergence in self-organized knowledge-defined networks. The research explores the constituents of the Self-Organized Networking (SON) paradigm for 5G and beyond, aiming to design a routing protocol that complies with the SON requirements. Further, it also exploits a contemporary discipline called Knowledge-Defined Networking (KDN) to extend the routing capability by calculating the ā€œMost Reliableā€ path than the shortest one. The research identifies the potential key areas and possible techniques to meet the objectives by surveying the state-of-the-art of the relevant fields, such as QoS aware routing, Hybrid SDN architectures, intelligent routing models, and service migration techniques. The design phase focuses primarily on the mathematical modelling of the routing problem and approaches the solution by optimizing at the structural level. The work contributes Stochastic Temporal Edge Normalization (STEN) technique which fuses link and node utilization for cost calculation; MRoute, a hybrid routing algorithm for SDN that leverages STEN to provide constant-time convergence; Most Reliable Route First (MRRF) that uses a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) to approximate route-reliability as the metric of MRRF. Additionally, the research outcomes include a cross-platform SDN Integration framework (SDN-SIM) and a secure migration technique for containerized services in a Multi-access Edge Computing environment using Distributed Ledger Technology. The research work now eyes the development of 6G standards and its compliance with Industry-5.0 for enhancing the abilities of the present outcomes in the light of Deep Reinforcement Learning and Quantum Computing

A Novel 6G Conversational Orchestration Framework for Enhancing Performance and Resource Utilization in Autonomous Vehicle Networks

    Get PDF
A vision of 6G aims to automate versatile services by eliminating the complexity of human effort for Industry 5.0 applications. This results in an intelligent environment with cognitive and collaborative capabilities of AI conversational orchestration that enable a variety of applications across smart Autonomous Vehicle (AV) networks. In this article, an innovative framework for AI conversational orchestration is proposed by enabling on-the-fly virtual infrastructure service orchestration for Anything-as-a-Service (XaaS) to automate a network service paradigm. The proposed framework will potentially contribute to the growth of 6G conversational orchestration by enabling on-the-fly automation of cloud and network services. The orchestration aspect of the 6G vision is not limited to cognitive collaborative communications, but also extends to context-aware personalized infrastructure for 6G automation. The experimental results of the implemented proof-of-concept framework are presented. These experiments not only affirm the technical capabilities of this framework, but also push into several Industry 5.0 applications

An Application of Declarative Languages in Distributed Architectures: ASP and DALI Microservices

    Get PDF
In this paper we introduce an approach to the possible adoption of Answer Set Programming (ASP) for the definition of microservices, which are a successful abstraction for designing distributed applications as suites of independently deployable interacting components. Such ASP-based components might be employed in distributed architectures related to Cloud Computing or to the Internet of Things (IoT), where the ASP microservices might be usefully coordinated with intelligent logic-based agents. We develop a case study where we consider ASP microservices in synergy with agents defined in DALI, a well-known logic-based agent-oriented programming language developed by our research group

Designing a Modern Software Engineering Training Program with Cloud Computing

    Get PDF
The software engineering industry is trending towards cloud computing. For our project, we assessed the various tools and practices used in modern software development. The main goals of this project were to create a reference model for developing cloud-based applications, to program a functional cloud-based prototype, and to develop an accompanying training manual. These materials will be incorporated into the software engineering courses at WPI, namely CS 3733 and CS 509

A Review of Platforms for the Development of Agent Systems

Agent-based computing is an active field of research with the goal of building autonomous software of hardware entities. This task is often facilitated by the use of dedicated, specialized frameworks. For almost thirty years, many such agent platforms have been developed. Meanwhile, some of them have been abandoned, others continue their development and new platforms are released. This paper presents a up-to-date review of the existing agent platforms and also a historical perspective of this domain. It aims to serve as a reference point for people interested in developing agent systems. This work details the main characteristics of the included agent platforms, together with links to specific projects where they have been used. It distinguishes between the active platforms and those no longer under development or with unclear status. It also classifies the agent platforms as general purpose ones, free or commercial, and specialized ones, which can be used for particular types of applications.Comment: 40 pages, 2 figures, 9 tables, 83 reference

Logic-based Technologies for Multi-agent Systems: A Systematic Literature Review

    Get PDF
Precisely when the success of artiļ¬cial intelligence (AI) sub-symbolic techniques makes them be identiļ¬ed with the whole AI by many non-computerscientists and non-technical media, symbolic approaches are getting more and more attention as those that could make AI amenable to human understanding. Given the recurring cycles in the AI history, we expect that a revamp of technologies often tagged as ā€œclassical AIā€ ā€“ in particular, logic-based ones will take place in the next few years. On the other hand, agents and multi-agent systems (MAS) have been at the core of the design of intelligent systems since their very beginning, and their long-term connection with logic-based technologies, which characterised their early days, might open new ways to engineer explainable intelligent systems. This is why understanding the current status of logic-based technologies for MAS is nowadays of paramount importance. Accordingly, this paper aims at providing a comprehensive view of those technologies by making them the subject of a systematic literature review (SLR). The resulting technologies are discussed and evaluated from two different perspectives: the MAS and the logic-based ones
