    Mainstream parallel array programming on cell

    We present the E] compiler and runtime library for the ā€˜Fā€™ subset of the Fortran 95 programming language. ā€˜Fā€™ provides first-class support for arrays, allowing E] to implicitly evaluate array expressions in parallel using the SPU coprocessors of the Cell Broadband Engine. We present performance results from four benchmarks that all demonstrate absolute speedups over equivalent ā€˜Cā€™ or Fortran versions running on the PPU host processor. A significant benefit of this straightforward approach is that a serial implementation of any code is always available, providing code longevity, and a familiar development paradigm

    Evaluating Cache Coherent Shared Virtual Memory for Heterogeneous Multicore Chips

    The trend in industry is towards heterogeneous multicore processors (HMCs), including chips with CPUs and massively-threaded throughput-oriented processors (MTTOPs) such as GPUs. Although current homogeneous chips tightly couple the cores with cache-coherent shared virtual memory (CCSVM), this is not the communication paradigm used by any current HMC. In this paper, we present a CCSVM design for a CPU/MTTOP chip, as well as an extension of the pthreads programming model, called xthreads, for programming this HMC.     Speculative Segmented Sum for Sparse Matrix-Vector Multiplication on Heterogeneous Processors

    Sparse matrix-vector multiplication (SpMV) is a central building block for scientific software and graph applications. Recently, heterogeneous processors composed of different types of cores attracted much attention because of their flexible core configuration and high energy efficiency. In this paper, we propose a compressed sparse row (CSR) format based SpMV algorithm utilizing both types of cores in a CPU-GPU heterogeneous processor. We first speculatively execute segmented sum operations on the GPU part of a heterogeneous processor and generate a possibly incorrect results. Then the CPU part of the same chip is triggered to re-arrange the predicted partial sums for a correct resulting vector. On three heterogeneous processors from Intel, AMD and nVidia, using 20 sparse matrices as a benchmark suite, the experimental results show that our method obtains significant performance improvement over the best existing CSR-based SpMV algorithms.     Fast and Lean Immutable Multi-Maps on the JVM based on Heterogeneous Hash-Array Mapped Tries

    An immutable multi-map is a many-to-many thread-friendly map data structure with expected fast insert and lookup operations. This data structure is used for applications processing graphs or many-to-many relations as applied in static analysis of object-oriented systems. When processing such big data sets the memory overhead of the data structure encoding itself is a memory usage bottleneck. Motivated by reuse and type-safety, libraries for Java, Scala and Clojure typically implement immutable multi-maps by nesting sets as the values with the keys of a trie map. Like this, based on our measurements the expected byte overhead for a sparse multi-map per stored entry adds up to around 65B, which renders it unfeasible to compute with effectively on the JVM. In this paper we propose a general framework for Hash-Array Mapped Tries on the JVM which can store type-heterogeneous keys and values: a Heterogeneous Hash-Array Mapped Trie (HHAMT). Among other applications, this allows for a highly efficient multi-map encoding by (a) not reserving space for empty value sets and (b) inlining the values of singleton sets while maintaining a (c) type-safe API. We detail the necessary encoding and optimizations to mitigate the overhead of storing and retrieving heterogeneous data in a hash-trie. Furthermore, we evaluate HHAMT specifically for the application to multi-maps, comparing them to state-of-the-art encodings of multi-maps in Java, Scala and Clojure. We isolate key differences using microbenchmarks and validate the resulting conclusions on a real world case in static analysis. The new encoding brings the per key-value storage overhead down to 30B: a 2x improvement. With additional inlining of primitive values it reaches a 4x improvement

    C Language Extensions for Hybrid CPU/GPU Programming with StarPU

    Modern platforms used for high-performance computing (HPC) include machines with both general-purpose CPUs, and "accelerators", often in the form of graphical processing units (GPUs). StarPU is a C library to exploit such platforms. It provides users with ways to define "tasks" to be executed on CPUs or GPUs, along with the dependencies among them, and by automatically scheduling them over all the available processing units. In doing so, it also relieves programmers from the need to know the underlying architecture details: it adapts to the available CPUs and GPUs, and automatically transfers data between main memory and GPUs as needed. While StarPU's approach is successful at addressing run-time scheduling issues, being a C library makes for a poor and error-prone programming interface. This paper presents an effort started in 2011 to promote some of the concepts exported by the library as C language constructs, by means of an extension of the GCC compiler suite. Our main contribution is the design and implementation of language extensions that map to StarPU's task programming paradigm. We argue that the proposed extensions make it easier to get started with StarPU,eliminate errors that can occur when using the C library, and help diagnose possible mistakes.     HSTREAM: A directive-based language extension for heterogeneous stream computing

    Big data streaming applications require utilization of heterogeneous parallel computing systems, which may comprise multiple multi-core CPUs and many-core accelerating devices such as NVIDIA GPUs and Intel Xeon Phis. Programming such systems require advanced knowledge of several hardware architectures and device-specific programming models, including OpenMP and CUDA. In this paper, we present HSTREAM, a compiler directive-based language extension to support programming stream computing applications for heterogeneous parallel computing systems. HSTREAM source-to-source compiler aims to increase the programming productivity by enabling programmers to annotate the parallel regions for heterogeneous execution and generate target specific code. The HSTREAM runtime automatically distributes the workload across CPUs and accelerating devices. We demonstrate the usefulness of HSTREAM language extension with various applications from the STREAM benchmark. Experimental evaluation results show that HSTREAM can keep the same programming simplicity as OpenMP, and the generated code can deliver performance beyond what CPUs-only and GPUs-only executions can deliver.Comment: Preprint, 21st IEEE International Conference on Computational Science and Engineering (CSE 2018

    OpenCL Actors - Adding Data Parallelism to Actor-based Programming with CAF

    The actor model of computation has been designed for a seamless support of concurrency and distribution. However, it remains unspecific about data parallel program flows, while available processing power of modern many core hardware such as graphics processing units (GPUs) or coprocessors increases the relevance of data parallelism for general-purpose computation. In this work, we introduce OpenCL-enabled actors to the C++ Actor Framework (CAF). This offers a high level interface for accessing any OpenCL device without leaving the actor paradigm. The new type of actor is integrated into the runtime environment of CAF and gives rise to transparent message passing in distributed systems on heterogeneous hardware. Following the actor logic in CAF, OpenCL kernels can be composed while encapsulated in C++ actors, hence operate in a multi-stage fashion on data resident at the GPU. Developers are thus enabled to build complex data parallel programs from primitives without leaving the actor paradigm, nor sacrificing performance. Our evaluations on commodity GPUs, an Nvidia TESLA, and an Intel PHI reveal the expected linear scaling behavior when offloading larger workloads. For sub-second duties, the efficiency of offloading was found to largely differ between devices. Moreover, our findings indicate a negligible overhead over programming with the native OpenCL API.Comment: 28 page

    A compiler extension for parallelizing arrays automatically on the cell heterogeneous processor

    This paper describes the approaches taken to extend an array programming language compiler using a Virtual SIMD Machine (VSM) model for parallelizing array operations on Cell Broadband Engine heterogeneous machine. This development is part of ongoing work at the University of Glasgow for developing array compilers that are beneficial for applications in many areas such as graphics, multimedia, image processing and scientific computation. Our extended compiler, which is built upon the VSM interface, eases the parallelization processes by allowing automatic parallelisation without the need for any annotations or process directives. The preliminary results demonstrate significant improvement especially on data-intensive applications
