The proliferation of online searching capabilities among its industrial clients, changes in marketing staff and direction, use of Dun and Bradstreet marketing service files, growth of the Annual Service Package program, and services delivered to clients at the NASA funded North Carolina Science and Technology Research Center are described. The library search service was reactivated and enlarged, and a survey was conducted on the NC/STRC Technical Bulletin's effectiveness. Several quotations from clients assess the overall value of the Center's services

The final report is presented for the North Carolina Science and Technology Research Center's 14th consecutive contract period as a NASA Industrial Applications Center, serving the information needs of nine Southeastern states. Included in the report are figures for and analysis of marketing efforts, file usage, search delivered, and other services performed for clients; and information on staff changes, workshops, and special projects in 1978. An appendix contains copies of NC/STRC magazine advertisements, letters from clients, and supplementary information on NC/STRC staff and services

Newborn screening using tandem mass spectrometry: A systematic review

    Get PDF
Objectives: To evaluate the evidence for the clinical effectiveness of neonatal screening for phenylketonuria (PKU) and medium-chain acyl-coA dehydrogenase (MCAD) deficiency using tandem mass spectrometry (tandem MS). Study design: Systematic review of published research. Data sources: Studies were identified by searching 12 electronic bibliographic databases; conference proceedings and experts consulted. Results: Six studies were selected for inclusion in the review. The evidence of neonatal screening for PKU and MCAD deficiency using tandem MS was primarily from observational data of large-scale prospective newborn screening programmes and systematic screening studies from Australia, Germany and the USA. Tandem MS based newborn screening of dried blood spots for PKU and/or MCAD deficiency was shown to be highly sensitive (>93.220%) and highly specific (>99.971%). The false positive rate for PKU screening was less than 0.046% and for MCAD deficiency the false positive rate was less than 0.023%. The positive predictive values ranged from 20 to 32% and 19 to 100%, respectively. Conclusions: This review suggests that neonatal screening of dried blood spots using a single analytical technique (tandem MS) is highly sensitive and specific for detecting cases of PKU and MCAD deficiency, and provides a basis for modelling of the clinical benefits and potential costeffectiveness

A Computerized Marine Data and Information System-Endex/Oasis

    Get PDF
The volume of international and national environmental data and information in the marine, earth and atmospheric sciences has created the need to systematically organize, handle, manipulate, store and retrieve this material utilizing sophisticated computer hardware and provide the scientist, student, planner and decision-maker with the awareness and accessibility of available data and information. Consonant with the objectives outlined for NOAA and the need generated by the explosion of information and data in this area, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA), Environmental Data Service (EDS) and the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), have an ongoing development effort in the Envirorrmental Data Index and theOceanic and Atmospheric Scientific Information System (ENDEX/OASIS) It provides a one - stop service on a marginal costrecovery basis that is available to the public for computerized searching of references to technical literature, data, and research dealing with the environmental sciences and marine and coastal resources
