    Advances of nanotechnology in agro-environmental studies

    With the increase in the world population and the demand for food, new agricultural practices have been developed to improve food production through the use of more effective pesticides and fertilisers. These technologies can lead to an uncontrolled release of undesired substances into the environment, with the potential to contaminate soil and groundwater. Today, nanotechnology represents a promising approach to improve agricultural production and remediate polluted sites. This paper reviews the recent applications of nanotechnologies in agro-environmental studies with particular attention to the fate of nanomaterials once introduced in water and soil, to the advantages of their use and their possible toxicology. Findings show that the use of nanomaterials can improve the quality of the environment and help detect and remediate polluted sites. Only a small number of nanomaterials demonstrated potential toxic effects. These are discussed in detail

    Use of Carnobacterium piscicola to limit the growth of Listeria monocytogenes in mussel products : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Philosophy in Microbiology at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

    Bacteria were screened in order to find an organism antagonistic to Listeria monocytogenes which could be applied to mussel products and enhance their safety, especially when temperature-abused. A Listeria monocytogenes isolate from the seafood industry was selected as the target organism. Strains of Lactobacillus reuteri and Enterococcus fecium were screened on plates incubated at 35°C and 10°C for anti-listerial compounds, but none were found. A non-bacteriocinogenic strain of Carnobacterium piscicola, A9b- was selected as the antagonist for detailed examination of growth in broth, agar and mussel systems at 10°C. This temperature was chosen to represent temperature abuse of refrigerated products. To distinguish between the growth of the Carnobacterium piscicola strain and wild-type Listeria monocytogenes a "semi-selective" agar was developed using phenol-red indicator, and mannitol as the sole carbohydrate source. Growth rates of Carnobacterium piscicola and Listeria monocytogenes were compared when grown alone and as a co-culture in agar and broth. Growth rates of Listeria monocytogenes when grown alone, and in the presence of Carnobacterium piscicola, were determined on mussels. Regression analyses were done for the inhibition of Listeria monocytogenes by Carnobacterium piscicola. In all cases Carnobacterium piscicola significantly inhibited the growth of Listeria monocytogenes (P broth = 0.018, P agar <0.001, P mussels < 0.001). Growth of both organisms was faster in broth, than on mussels or agar. The greatest inhibition of Listeria monocytogenes was observed in broth reaching log₁₀4.8 at 41 hours of incubation, prior to decreasing after this time. In agar and mussels the inhibition lasted longer and had not decreased at the end of the trial. The log₁₀ reduction in growth of Listeria monocytogenes in agar was measured at 3.4 and in mussels measured at 1.6. These results were statistically significant (P<0.001 for all). Inhibition of wild type Listeria monocytogenes was also shown in broth when a much lower concentration of Carnobacterium piscicola was used. These results should be considered as preliminary and further confirmatory work should be done. However, Carnobacterium piscicola A9b- shows promise as an antagonistic organism to assist in the control of Listeria monocytogenes in mussel products along with industry-accepted good hygienic practices

    Determining key research areas for healthier diets and sustainable food systems in Viet Nam

    Vietnamese food systems are undergoing rapid transformation, with important implications for human and environmental health and economic development. Poverty has decreased, and diet quality and undernutrition have improved significantly since the end of the Doi Moi reform period (1986-1993) as a result of Viet Nam opening its economy and increasing its regional and global trade. Yet poor diet quality is still contributing the triple burden of malnutrition, with 25 percent stunting among children under age 5, 26 percent and 29 percent of women and children, respectively, anemic, and 21 percent of adults overweight. Agricultural production systems have shifted from predominantly diverse smallholder systems to larger more commercialized and specialized systems, especially for crops, while the ‘meatification’ of the Vietnamese diet is generating serious trade-offs between improved nutrition and sustainability of the Vietnamese food systems. The food processing industry has developed rapidly, together with food imports, resulting in new and processed food products penetrating the food retail outlets, trending towards an increase in the Westernized consumption patterns that are shifting nutrition-related problems towards overweight and obesity and, with it, an increase of non-communicable disease-related health risks. While regulatory policies exist across the food system, these are not systematically implemented, making food safety a major concern for consumers and policy makers alike. Where data exists, it is not easy to aggregate with data from across food system dimensions, making it difficult for Viet Nam to make an informed analysis of current and potential food system trade-offs. In our research, we reviewed existing literature and data, and applied a food systems framework to develop an initial food systems profile for Viet Nam and to identify a comprehensive set a of research questions to fill current data gaps identified through the review. Insights on these would provide the comprehensive evidence needed to inform policy makers on how to develop new food systems policies for Viet Nam, and further refine and improve existing policies to achieve better quality diets and more sustainable food systems in Viet Nam. Based on these, we then engaged with stakeholders to develop research priorities in the Viet Nam context and identified 25 priority research questions. This paper aims to stimulate such reflections by clearly outlining key areas for research, government policy, and development programs on priority investment to build the evidence base around inclusive food systems interventions that aim to result in healthier diets and more sustainable food systems for Viet Nam

    Scientific innovation for the sustainable development of African agriculture

    The African continent has considerable potential to reap the benefits associated with modern agricultural biotechnology. Plant biotechnology and breeding represent an invaluable toolbox to face the challenges of African agriculture, such as food and nutrition security, environment protection, soil fertility, and crop adaptation to new climatic conditions. As Africa has only relatively recently adopted agricultural biotechnology, it has the opportunity to harness the immense knowledge gathered over the last two decades while avoiding some of the difficulties experienced by early adopters. High-level research and education systems together with a specific regulatory framework are critical elements in the development of sustainable biotechnology-based agriculture and industry. The more actors that are involved in Research & Development applied to nutritionally and important local crops, the faster Africa will generate its future African innovators.     The poultry industry has been successfully becoming a leading industry of Bangladesh. The primary objective of the study is to identify the various aspect relating the growth and sustainability of poultry industry in Bangladesh. Authors argued that strategic management in poultry sector requires complementing to achieve present Govt.’s vision of Digital Bangladesh 2021. Considering the importance of the country’s poultry industry in order to ensure the sustainable economic development it is now high time to step forward for the better accumulation of resources available from this industry. This industry proves various opportunities of increasing GDP growth rate plus equitable distribution through arranging food security as well as ensuring self-employment at a large scale as pointed out by the authors.

    Staple crops biofortified with increased vitamins and minerals : considerations for a public health strategy

    Biofortification of staple crops has been proposed as a strategy to address micronutrient malnutrition, particularly with respect to insufficient intake of vitamin A, iron, zinc, and folate. The World Health Organization, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science at the New York Academy of Sciences, convened a technical consultation entitled "Staple Crops Biofortified with Vitamins and Minerals: Considerations for a Public Health Strategy" in April 2016. Participants of the consultation reviewed the definition of biofortification of staple crops, patterns of crops production, processing, consumption, seed varieties, and micronutrient stability and bioavailability, as well as farmers' adoption and acceptability of the modified crops. Also discussed were economic, environmental, safety, and equity aspects of biofortified crops, as well as legal, policy, regulatory, and ethical issues for the implementation of biofortification strategies in agriculture and nutrition. Consultation working groups identified important and emerging technical issues, lessons learned, and research priorities to better support the evidence of improved nutrition and unintended adverse effects of biofortification. This paper provides the background and rationale of the technical consultation, synopsizes the presentations, and provides a summary of the main considerations proposed by the working groups
