    Serious Games in Cultural Heritage

    Although the widespread use of gaming for leisure purposes has been well documented, the use of games to support cultural heritage purposes, such as historical teaching and learning, or for enhancing museum visits, has been less well considered. The state-of-the-art in serious game technology is identical to that of the state-of-the-art in entertainment games technology. As a result the field of serious heritage games concerns itself with recent advances in computer games, real-time computer graphics, virtual and augmented reality and artificial intelligence. On the other hand, the main strengths of serious gaming applications may be generalised as being in the areas of communication, visual expression of information, collaboration mechanisms, interactivity and entertainment. In this report, we will focus on the state-of-the-art with respect to the theories, methods and technologies used in serious heritage games. We provide an overview of existing literature of relevance to the domain, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the described methods and point out unsolved problems and challenges. In addition, several case studies illustrating the application of methods and technologies used in cultural heritage are presented

    CRIKEY! ― It's co-ordination in temporal planning

    Temporal planning contains aspects of both planning and scheduling. Many temporal planners assume a loose coupling between these two sub-problems in the form of "blackbox" durative actions, where the state of the world is not known during the action's execution. This reduces the size of the search space and so simplifies the temporal planning problem, restricting what can be modelled. In particular, the simplification makes it impossible to model co-ordination, where actions must be executed concurrently to achieve a desired effect. Coordination results from logical and temporal constraints that must both be met, and for this reason, the planner and scheduler must communicate in order to find a valid temporal plan. This communication effectively increases the size of the search space, so must be done intelligently and as little as possible to limit this increase. This thesis contributes a comprehensive analysis of where temporal constraints appear in temporal planning problems. It introduces the notions of minimum and maximum temporal constraints, and with these isolates where the planning and scheduling are coupled together tightly, in the form of co-ordination, it characterises this with the new concepts of envelopes and contents. A new temporal planner written, called СRIKЕҮ, uses this theory to solve temporal problems involving co-ordination that other planners are unable to solve. However, it does this intelligently, using this theory to minimise the communication between the sub-solvers, and so does not expand the search space unnecessarily. The novel search space that CRIKEY uses docs not specify the timings of future events and this allows for the handling of duration inequalities, which again, few other temporal planners are able to solve. Results presented show СRIKЕҮ to be a competitive planner, whilst not making the same simplifying assumptions that other temporal planners make as to the nature of temporal planning problems

    Integration of remote sensing and GIS in studying vegetation trends and conditions in the gum arabic belt in North Kordofan, Sudan

    The gum arabic belt in Sudan plays a significant role in environmental, social and economical aspects. The belt has suffered from deforestation and degradation due to natural hazards and human activities. This research was conducted in North Kordofan State, which is affected by modifications in conditions and composition of vegetation cover trends in the gum arabic belt as in the rest of the Sahelian Sudan zone. The application of remote sensing, geographical information system and satellites imageries with multi-temporal and spatial analysis of land use land cover provides the land managers with current and improved data for the purposes of effective management of natural resources in the gum arabic belt. This research investigated the possibility of identification, monitoring and mapping of the land use land cover changes and dynamics in the gum arabic belt during the last 35 years. Also a newly approach of object-based classification was applied for image classification. Additionally, the study elaborated the integration of conventional forest inventory with satellite imagery for Acacia senegal stands. The study used imageries from different satellites (Landsat and ASTER) and multi-temporal dates (MSS 1972, TM 1985, ETM+ 1999 and ASTER 2007) acquired in dry season (November). The imageries were geo-referenced and radiometrically corrected by using ENVI-FLAASH software. Image classification (pixel-based and object-based), post-classification change detection, 2x2 and 3x3 pixel windows and accuracy assessment were applied. A total of 47 field samples were inventoried for Acacia senegal tree’s variables in Elhemmaria forest. Three areas were selected and distributed along the gum arabic belt. Regression method analysis was applied to study the relationship between forest attributes and the ASTER imagery. Application of multi-temporal remote sensing data in gum arabic belt demonstrated successfully the identification and mapping of land use land cover into five main classes. Also NDVI categorisation provided a consistent method for land use land cover stratification and mapping. Forest dominated by Acacia senegal class was separated covering an area of 21% and 24% in the year 2007 for areas A and B, respectively. The land use land cover structure in the gum arabic belt has obvious changes and reciprocal conversions between the classes indicating the trends and conditions caused by the human interventions as well as ecological impacts on Acacia senegal trees. The study revealed a drastic loss of Acacia senegal cover by 25% during the period of 1972 to 2007.The results of the study revealed to a significant correlation (p ≤ 0.05) between the ASTER bands (VNIR) and vegetation indices (NDVI, SAVI, RVI) with stand density, volume, crown area and basal area of Acacia senegal trees. The derived 2x2 and 3x3 pixel windows methods successfully extracted the spectral reflectance of Acacia senegal trees from ASTER imagery. Four equations were developed and could be widely used and applied for monitoring the stand density, volume, basal area and crown area of Acacia senegal trees in the gum arabic belt considering the similarity between the selected areas. The pixel-based approach performed slightly better than the object-based approach in land use land cover classification in the gum arabic belt. The study come out with some valuable recommendations and comments which could contribute positively in using remotely sensed imagery and GIS techniques to explore management tools of Acacia senegal stands in order to maintain the tree component in the farming and the land use systems in the gum arabic belt

    The relations between temporal memory abilities, time knowledge, executive function, and language in early and middle childhood

    The current dissertation was designed to examine relations between temporal memory abilities, time knowledge, executive function (EF) components, and language in early and middle childhood. Time is an essential feature of episodic memory—memory for events from a specific time and place (Tulving, 1972). Memory for temporal order and context (e.g., season, time) improves substantially from 4 to 8 years of age (Pathman, Larkina, et al., 2013). To recall the time of events, Friedman (1993) discussed a process called reconstruction, which includes combining recalled details with time knowledge. Reconstruction abilities emerge in early childhood, show marked development during the transition to middle childhood (Friedman, 2014), and might relate to EF skills given the need to monitor the retrieval process by coordinating event details with time knowledge. Study 1 investigated the relations between memory for temporal order and context of personal events, time knowledge, EF components, and language in early childhood. Ninety-five 4- and 5-year-old children were interviewed about two recent events, and responses were coded for temporal order and context information. Participants also completed an EF task battery, time knowledge task, and receptive language task. Working memory was related to preschoolers’ memory for temporal context when controlling for age, cognitive flexibility, and time knowledge. Study 2 explored the relations between reconstruction abilities, time knowledge, and EF components in early and middle childhood. Eighty-one 4- to 7- year-olds heard two stories about child characters playing outside that took place in specific temporal contexts (e.g., Spring, Morning). The experimenter included temporal cues (e.g., flowers growing) but never stated the season or time. Participants then completed an EF task battery, which was followed by questions about the temporal contexts and cues of each story and a time knowledge task. Both cognitive flexibility and time knowledge were related to temporal judgments when controlling for age and working memory. Overall, there is evidence from this dissertation that EF components and time knowledge are related to temporal memory abilities in early and middle childhood. These findings have implications for children’s ability to construct narratives, create an autobiography and self-identity, and their ability to provide eyewitness testimony in early and middle childhood

    Utility of High Resolution Human Settlement Data for Assessment of Electricity Usage Patterns

    Electricity is vital for modern human civilization, and its demands are expected to significantly rise due to urban growth, transportation modernization, and increasing industrialization and energy accessibility. Meeting the present and future demands while minimizing the environmental degradation from electricity generation pathways presents a significant sustainability challenge. Urban areas consume around 75% of global energy supply yet urban energy statistics are scarce all over the world, creating a severe hindrance for the much-needed energy sustainability studies. This work explores the scope of geospatial data-driven analysis and modeling to address this challenge. Identification and measurements of human habitats, a key measure, is severely misconceived. A multi-scale analysis of high, medium, and coarse resolution datasets in Egypt and Taiwan illustrates the increasing discrepancies from global to local scales. Analysis of urban morphology revealed that high-resolution datasets could perform much better at all scales in diverse geographies while the power of other datasets rapidly diminishes from the urban core to peripheries. A functional inventory of urban settlements was developed for three cities in the developing world using very high-resolution images and texture analysis. Analysis of correspondence between nighttime lights emission, a proxy of electricity consumption, and the settlement inventory was the conducted. The results highlight the statistically significant relationship between functional settlement types and corresponding light emission, and underline the potential of remote sensing data-driven methods in urban energy usage assessment. Lastly, the lack of urban electricity data was addressed by a geospatial modeling approach in the United States. The estimated urban electricity consumption was externally validated and subsequently used to quantify the effects of urbanization on electricity consumption. The results indicate a 23% lowering of electricity consumption corresponding to a 100% increase in urban population. The results highlight the potential of urbanization in lowering per-capita energy usage. The opportunity and limits to such energy efficiency were identified with regards to urban population density. The findings from this work validate the applicability of geospatial data in urban energy studies and provide unique insights into the relationship between urbanization and electricity demands. The insights from this work could be useful for other sustainability studies

    Music is a universal phenomenon and is a real, physical thing. It is processed in neural circuits that overlap with language circuits, and it exerts cognitive, emotional, and physiological effects on humans. Many of those effects are therapeutic, such as reduced symptoms of physical and mental ailments. Music is the result of the elements rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre, dynamics, and form. Rhythm is the focus of pop music, and melody is the focus of classical music. The mind perceives and organizes music in learned, consistent ways in order to generate predictions and extract meaning. There are perceptual laws and information processing limitations to this process. Predictions are based in schematic and veridical approaches, which give rise to expectations. Frustrated expectations result in an effective response. Music only has meaning unto itself and the music listener ascribes any extra-musical meaning. This includes any emotional meaning. The unfolding of a song is much like how Gestalt Therapy theory conceptualizes human experience. Mindfulness offers a clear definition of how one can frame and approach experience to support health and well-being.
