Engineering of an Extreme Rainfall Detection System using Grid Computing
This paper describes a new approach for intensive rainfall data analysis. ITHACA's Extreme Rainfall Detection System (ERDS) is conceived to provide near real-time alerts related to potential exceptional rainfalls worldwide, which can be used by WFP or other humanitarian assistance organizations to evaluate the event and understand the potentially floodable areas where their assistance is needed. This system is based on precipitation analysis and it uses rainfall data from satellite at worldwide extent. This project uses the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis dataset, a NASA-delivered near real-time product for current rainfall condition monitoring over the world. Considering the great deal of data to process, this paper presents an architectural solution based on Grid Computing techniques. Detecting Irregular Patterns in IoT Streaming Data for Fall Detection
Detecting patterns in real time streaming data has been an interesting and
challenging data analytics problem. With the proliferation of a variety of
sensor devices, real-time analytics of data from the Internet of Things (IoT)
to learn regular and irregular patterns has become an important machine
learning problem to enable predictive analytics for automated notification and
decision support. In this work, we address the problem of learning an irregular
human activity pattern, fall, from streaming IoT data from wearable sensors. We
present a deep neural network model for detecting fall based on accelerometer
data giving 98.75 percent accuracy using an online physical activity monitoring
dataset called "MobiAct", which was published by Vavoulas et al. The initial
model was developed using IBM Watson studio and then later transferred and
deployed on IBM Cloud with the streaming analytics service supported by IBM
Streams for monitoring real-time IoT data. We also present the systems
architecture of the real-time fall detection framework that we intend to use
with mbientlabs wearable health monitoring sensors for real time patient
monitoring at retirement homes or rehabilitation clinics.Comment: 7 page
Discrete event simulation and virtual reality use in industry: new opportunities and future trends
This paper reviews the area of combined discrete
event simulation (DES) and virtual reality (VR) use within industry.
While establishing a state of the art for progress in this
area, this paper makes the case for VR DES as the vehicle of choice
for complex data analysis through interactive simulation models,
highlighting both its advantages and current limitations. This paper
reviews active research topics such as VR and DES real-time
integration, communication protocols, system design considerations,
model validation, and applications of VR and DES. While
summarizing future research directions for this technology combination,
the case is made for smart factory adoption of VR DES as
a new platform for scenario testing and decision making. It is put
that in order for VR DES to fully meet the visualization requirements
of both Industry 4.0 and Industrial Internet visions of digital
manufacturing, further research is required in the areas of lower
latency image processing, DES delivery as a service, gesture recognition
for VR DES interaction, and linkage of DES to real-time data streams and Big Data sets
