Gabriel Harvey and the History of Reading: Essays by Lisa Jardine and others
Few articles in the humanities have had the impact of Lisa Jardine and Anthony Grafton’s seminal ‘Studied for Action’ (1990), a study of the reading practices of Elizabethan polymath and prolific annotator Gabriel Harvey. Their excavation of the setting, methods and ambitions of Harvey’s encounters with his books ignited the History of Reading, an interdisciplinary field which quickly became one of the most exciting corners of the scholarly cosmos. A generation inspired by the model of Harvey fanned out across the world’s libraries and archives, seeking to reveal the many creative, unexpected and curious ways that individuals throughout history responded to texts, and how these interpretations in turn illuminate past worlds.
Three decades on, Harvey’s example and Jardine’s work remain central to cutting-edge scholarship in the History of Reading. By uniting ‘Studied for Action’ with published and unpublished studies on Harvey by Jardine, Grafton and the scholars they have influenced, this collection provides a unique lens on the place of marginalia in textual, intellectual and cultural history. The chapters capture subsequent work on Harvey and map the fields opened by Jardine and Grafton’s original article, collectively offering a posthumous tribute to Lisa Jardine and an authoritative overview of the History of Reading
Displacement and the Humanities: Manifestos from the Ancient to the Present

In adopting an innovative dialogic structure, between practitioners on the ground - from architects and urban planners to artists - and academics working across subject areas, the volume is a proposition to: remap priorities for current research agendas; open up disciplines, critically analysing their approaches; address the socio-political responsibilities that we have as scholars and practitioners; and provide an alternative site of discourse for contemporary concerns about displacement. Ultimately, this volume aims to provoke future work and collaborations - hence, manifestos - not only in the historical and literary fields, but wider research concerned with human mobility and the challenges confronting people who are out of place of rights, protection and belonging

Modernising European Legal Education (MELE) : Innovative Strategies to Address Urgent Cross-Cutting Challenges
This open access book presents innovative strategies to address cross-cutting topics and foster transversal competences. The modernization of European legal education presents a compelling challenge that calls for enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration among academic disciplines and innovative teaching methods. The volume introduces venues towards education innovation and engages with complex and emerging topics such as datafication, climate change, gender, and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The insights presented not only emphasize the importance of preserving traditional approaches to legal disciplines and passing them on to future generations, but also underscore the need to critically reassess and revolutionize existing structures. As our societies become more diverse and our understanding of legitimacy, justice, and values undergoes transformations, it is imperative to reconsider the role of traditional values while exploring promising alternative approaches
Paraphrasing evades detectors of AI-generated text, but retrieval is an effective defense
The rise in malicious usage of large language models, such as fake content
creation and academic plagiarism, has motivated the development of approaches
that identify AI-generated text, including those based on watermarking or
outlier detection. However, the robustness of these detection algorithms to
paraphrases of AI-generated text remains unclear. To stress test these
detectors, we build a 11B parameter paraphrase generation model (DIPPER) that
can paraphrase paragraphs, condition on surrounding context, and control
lexical diversity and content reordering. Using DIPPER to paraphrase text
generated by three large language models (including GPT3.5-davinci-003)
successfully evades several detectors, including watermarking, GPTZero,
DetectGPT, and OpenAI's text classifier. For example, DIPPER drops detection
accuracy of DetectGPT from 70.3% to 4.6% (at a constant false positive rate of
1%), without appreciably modifying the input semantics.
To increase the robustness of AI-generated text detection to paraphrase
attacks, we introduce a simple defense that relies on retrieving
semantically-similar generations and must be maintained by a language model API
provider. Given a candidate text, our algorithm searches a database of
sequences previously generated by the API, looking for sequences that match the
candidate text within a certain threshold. We empirically verify our defense
using a database of 15M generations from a fine-tuned T5-XXL model and find
that it can detect 80% to 97% of paraphrased generations across different
settings while only classifying 1% of human-written sequences as AI-generated.

Sidekick compilation with xDSL
Traditionally, compiler researchers either conduct experiments within an
existing production compiler or develop their own prototype compiler; both
options come with trade-offs. On one hand, prototyping in a production compiler
can be cumbersome, as they are often optimized for program compilation speed at
the expense of software simplicity and development speed. On the other hand,
the transition from a prototype compiler to production requires significant
engineering work. To bridge this gap, we introduce the concept of sidekick
compiler frameworks, an approach that uses multiple frameworks that
interoperate with each other by leveraging textual interchange formats and
declarative descriptions of abstractions. Each such compiler framework is
specialized for specific use cases, such as performance or prototyping.
Abstractions are by design shared across frameworks, simplifying the transition
from prototyping to production. We demonstrate this idea with xDSL, a sidekick
for MLIR focused on prototyping and teaching. xDSL interoperates with MLIR
through a shared textual IR and the exchange of IRs through an IR Definition
Language. The benefits of sidekick compiler frameworks are evaluated by showing
on three use cases how xDSL impacts their development: teaching, DSL
compilation, and rewrite system prototyping. We also investigate the trade-offs
that xDSL offers, and demonstrate how we simplify the transition between
frameworks using the IRDL dialect. With sidekick compilation, we envision a
future in which engineers minimize the cost of development by choosing a
framework built for their immediate needs, and later transitioning to
production with minimal overhead

Artificial Intelligence and International Conflict in Cyberspace
This edited volume explores how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming international conflict in cyberspace. Over the past three decades, cyberspace developed into a crucial frontier and issue of international conflict. However, scholarly work on the relationship between AI and conflict in cyberspace has been produced along somewhat rigid disciplinary boundaries and an even more rigid sociotechnical divide – wherein technical and social scholarship are seldomly brought into a conversation. This is the first volume to address these themes through a comprehensive and cross-disciplinary approach. With the intent of exploring the question ‘what is at stake with the use of automation in international conflict in cyberspace through AI?’, the chapters in the volume focus on three broad themes, namely: (1) technical and operational, (2) strategic and geopolitical and (3) normative and legal. These also constitute the three parts in which the chapters of this volume are organised, although these thematic sections should not be considered as an analytical or a disciplinary demarcation
