    Satellites are the transmission medium for providing connectivity and building global, continental, or regional networks around the world (satellite operators effectively use satellites to support Internet traffic), and point-to-point connections are also possible. In practical use, there are combinations of VSAT networks with terrestrial wireless extensions, allowing end users to increase the capabilities offered via satellite. This paper provides selected information on broadband satellite networks using VSAT technology, including available protocols and transmission platforms. The aim of the article is also to present the chosen technical aspects of satellite networks working with the usage of VSAT technology.Satelity stanowią medium transmisyjne dla zapewnienia łączności i budowy sieci globalnych, kontynentalnych czy regionalnych na całym świecie (operatorzy satelitarni efektywnie wykorzystują satelity do obsługi ruchu internetowego), przy czym możliwe są także połączenia typu punkt-punkt. W praktycznym użyciu są kombinacje sieci VSAT z bezprzewodowymi rozszerzeniami naziemnymi, co pozwala zwiększyć użytkownikom końcowym możliwości oferowane za pośrednictwem satelity. W artykule zamieszczono wybrane informacje na temat szerokopasmowych sieci satelitarnych z wykorzystaniem technologii VSAT, z uwzględnieniem dostępnych protokołów i platform transmisyjnych. Celem artykułu jest także przedstawienie wybranych aspektów technicznych sieci satelitarnych pracujących z wykorzystaniem technologii VSAT

    Managing big data experiments on smartphones

    The explosive number of smartphones with ever growing sensing and computing capabilities have brought a paradigm shift to many traditional domains of the computing field. Re-programming smartphones and instrumenting them for application testing and data gathering at scale is currently a tedious and time-consuming process that poses significant logistical challenges. Next generation smartphone applications are expected to be much larger-scale and complex, demanding that these undergo evaluation and testing under different real-world datasets, devices and conditions. In this paper, we present an architecture for managing such large-scale data management experiments on real smartphones. We particularly present the building blocks of our architecture that encompassed smartphone sensor data collected by the crowd and organized in our big data repository. The given datasets can then be replayed on our testbed comprising of real and simulated smartphones accessible to developers through a web-based interface. We present the applicability of our architecture through a case study that involves the evaluation of individual components that are part of a complex indoor positioning system for smartphones, coined Anyplace, which we have developed over the years. The given study shows how our architecture allows us to derive novel insights into the performance of our algorithms and applications, by simplifying the management of large-scale data on smartphones

    Design and Implementation of HD Wireless Video Transmission System Based on Millimeter Wave

    With the improvement of optical fiber communication network construction and the improvement of camera technology, the video that the terminal can receive becomes clearer, with resolution up to 4K. Although optical fiber communication has high bandwidth and fast transmission speed, it is not the best solution for indoor short-distance video transmission in terms of cost, laying difficulty and speed. In this context, this thesis proposes to design and implement a multi-channel wireless HD video transmission system with high transmission performance by using the 60GHz millimeter wave technology, aiming to improve the bandwidth from optical nodes to wireless terminals and improve the quality of video transmission. This thesis mainly covers the following parts: (1) This thesis implements wireless video transmission algorithm, which is divided into wireless transmission algorithm and video transmission algorithm, such as 64QAM modulation and demodulation algorithm, H.264 video algorithm and YUV420P algorithm. (2) This thesis designs the hardware of wireless HD video transmission system, including network processing unit (NPU) and millimeter wave module. Millimeter wave module uses RWM6050 baseband chip and TRX-BF01 rf chip. This thesis will design the corresponding hardware circuit based on the above chip, such as 10Gb/s network port, PCIE. (3) This thesis realizes the software design of wireless HD video transmission system, selects FFmpeg and Nginx to build the sending platform of video transmission system on NPU, and realizes video multiplex transmission with Docker. On the receiving platform of video transmission, FFmpeg and Qt are selected to realize video decoding, and OpenGL is combined to realize video playback. (4) Finally, the thesis completed the wireless HD video transmission system test, including pressure test, Web test and application scenario test. It has been verified that its HD video wireless transmission system can transmit HD VR video with three-channel bit rate of 1.2GB /s, and its rate can reach up to 3.7GB /s, which meets the research goal

    Future Trends and Challenges for Mobile and Convergent Networks

    Some traffic characteristics like real-time, location-based, and community-inspired, as well as the exponential increase on the data traffic in mobile networks, are challenging the academia and standardization communities to manage these networks in completely novel and intelligent ways, otherwise, current network infrastructures can not offer a connection service with an acceptable quality for both emergent traffic demand and application requisites. In this way, a very relevant research problem that needs to be addressed is how a heterogeneous wireless access infrastructure should be controlled to offer a network access with a proper level of quality for diverse flows ending at multi-mode devices in mobile scenarios. The current chapter reviews recent research and standardization work developed under the most used wireless access technologies and mobile access proposals. It comprehensively outlines the impact on the deployment of those technologies in future networking environments, not only on the network performance but also in how the most important requirements of several relevant players, such as, content providers, network operators, and users/terminals can be addressed.     A coarse-grained dynamically reconfigurable MAC processor for power-sensitive multi-standard devices

    DRMP, a Dynamically Reconfigurable MAC Processor, is an innovative, dynamically reconfigurable System-on-Chip architecture. The architecture exploits substantial overlaps in the functionality of different wireless MAC layers. Its flexibility is specialized for addressing the requirements of the MAC layer of wireless standards. It is targeted at consumer, multi-standard, handheld devices, and its design is meant to address the balance of flexibility and power-efficiency that this target market demands. The DRMP reconfigures packet-by-packet on the fly, allowing execution of concurrent protocol modes on a single hardware co-processor. An interrupt-driven programming model has also been presented and shown to implement the protocol state-machine of the three protocols on a CPU. These features will allow the DRMP to replace three MAC processors in a hand-held device. The most innovative component of the DRMP architecture is its Interface and Reconfiguration Controller. It uses a combination of asynchronous controllers to dynamically reconfigure the functional units in the architecture and delegate MAC tasks to them. The architecture has been modeled in Simulink at cycle-approximate abstraction. Results of simulations involving transmission and reception of packets have been presented, showing that the platform concurrently handles three protocol streams, reconfigures dynamically, yet meets and exceeds the protocol timing constraints, all at a moderate frequency. Its heterogeneous and coarse-grained functional units, limited connectivity requirements between these units, and proportionally large time that these resources are idle, promise a very modest power-consumption, suitable for mobile devices, while offering flexibility to implement different MAC protocols
