    Model-driven engineering approach to design and implementation of robot control system

    In this paper we apply a model-driven engineering approach to designing domain-specific solutions for robot control system development. We present a case study of the complete process, including identification of the domain meta-model, graphical notation definition and source code generation for subsumption architecture -- a well-known example of robot control architecture. Our goal is to show that both the definition of the robot-control architecture and its supporting tools fits well into the typical workflow of model-driven engineering development.Comment: Presented at DSLRob 2011 (arXiv:cs/1212.3308

    Multi-Agent Task Allocation for Robot Soccer

The evaluation process was implemented as a collection of simulated soccer matches. A soccer-simulation software package was used as the test-bed as it provided the necessary features for implementing and testing the methodologies. The methodologies were tested through competitions with a number of available soccer strategies. Soccer game scores, communication, robustness, fault-tolerance, and replanning capabilities were the parameters used as the evaluation criteria for the mul1i-agent systems

    In the development of mobile robotic systems, a robotic architecture plays a crucial role in interconnecting all the sub-systems and controlling the system. The design of robotic architectures for mobile autonomous robots is a challenging and complex task. With a number of existing architectures and tools to choose from, a review of the existing robotic architecture is essential. This paper surveys the different paradigms in robotic architectures. A classification of the existing robotic architectures and comparison of different proposals attributes and properties have been carried out. The paper also provides a view on the current state of designing robot architectures.     The objective of this book is to cover advances of mobile robotics and related technologies applied for multi robot systems' design and development. Design of control system is a complex issue, requiring the application of information technologies to link the robots into a single network. Human robot interface becomes a demanding task, especially when we try to use sophisticated methods for brain signal processing. Generated electrophysiological signals can be used to command different devices, such as cars, wheelchair or even video games. A number of developments in navigation and path planning, including parallel programming, can be observed. Cooperative path planning, formation control of multi robotic agents, communication and distance measurement between agents are shown. Training of the mobile robot operators is very difficult task also because of several factors related to different task execution. The presented improvement is related to environment model generation based on autonomous mobile robot observations

    A Multi-Vehicle Cooperative Localization Approach for an Autonomy Framework

    Offensive techniques produced by technological advancement present opportunities for adversaries to threaten the operational advantages of our joint and allied forces. Combating these new methodologies requires continuous and rapid development towards our own set of \game-changing technologies. Through focused development of unmanned systems and autonomy, the Air Force can strive to maintain its technological superiority. Furthermore, creating a robust framework capable of testing and evaluating the principles that define autonomy allows for the exploration of future capabilities. This research presents development towards a hybrid reactive/deliberative architecture that will allow for the testing of the principles of task, cognitive, and peer flexibility. Specifically, this work explores peer flexibility in multi-robot systems to solve a localization problem using the Hybrid Architecture for Multiple Robots (HAMR) as a basis for the framework. To achieve this task a combination of vehicle perception and navigation tools formulate inferences on an operating environment. These inferences are then used for the construction of Factor Graphs upon which the core algorithm for localization implements iSAM2, a high performing incremental matrix factorization method. A key component for individual vehicle control within the framework is the Unified Behavior Framework (UBF), a behavior-based control architecture which uses modular arbitration techniques to generate actions that enable actuator control. Additionally, compartmentalization of a World Model is explored through the use of containers to minimize communication overhead and streamline state information.     Behavior Flexibility for Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Systems

    Autonomous unmanned aerial systems (UAS) could supplement and eventually subsume a substantial portion of the mission set currently executed by remote pilots, making UAS more robust, responsive, and numerous than permitted by teleoperation alone. Unfortunately, the development of robust autonomous systems is difficult, costly, and time-consuming. Furthermore, the resulting systems often make little reuse of proven software components and offer limited adaptability for new tasks. This work presents a development platform for UAS which promotes behavioral flexibility. The platform incorporates the Unified Behavior Framework (a modular, extensible autonomy framework), the Robotic Operating System (a RSF), and PX4 (an open- source flight controller). Simulation of UBF agents identify a combination of reactive robotic control strategies effective for small-scale navigation tasks by a UAS in the presence of obstacles. Finally, flight tests provide a partial validation of the simulated results. The development platform presented in this work offers robust and responsive behavioral flexibility for UAS agents in simulation and reality. This work lays the foundation for further development of a unified autonomous UAS platform supporting advanced planning algorithms and inter-agent communication by providing a behavior-flexible framework in which to implement, execute, extend, and reuse behaviors

    RoboArch: Architectural Modelling for Robotic Applications

    Robotic systems are being employed in a diverse range of applications, with both the scale and complexity of their software increasing through having to operate in unstructured environments and to provide higher levels of autonomy. In addition, the need for robotic systems to be verified grows as robots are used in applications where they can have significant safety implications. Verification of even small robotic systems software is a challenging problem. Therefore, additional techniques are required to enable the practitioners to produce verified robotic systems. The use of model-driven engineering and domain-specific languages (DSLs) have proven useful in the development of complex systems in other areas so applying them to the field of robotics can contribute to the goal of building reliable and safe systems. In this thesis we present RoboArch, a notation for describing the architectures and patterns of robotic systems software supported by the formally defined semantics of RoboChart. RoboChart is a DSL for modelling the behaviour of robot software controllers using state machines. We describe RoboArch from the top-down. First, we examine the role of robotics software architectures in the development of robotic systems by reviewing five robotics architectures, and five DSLs. Next, for the layered architectural pattern, the RoboArch notation is introduced; we provide a metamodel, well-formedness conditions, and transformation rules to RoboChart. Further, we characterise two patterns: reactive skills and subsumption, which can be used by a layer. Finally, we discuss a tool and its implementation for the evaluation of RoboArch and automation of the rules as model transformations. We use a case study of a small obstacle avoidance system to demonstrate: the application of the reactive skills pattern using RoboArch and the expected properties of the architecture that can be proven using the generated RoboChart model CSP semantics

    The design and implementation of a multi-agent architecture to increase coordination efficiency in multi-AUV operations

    This research addresses the problem of coordinating multiple autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) operations. An intelligent mission executive has been created that uses multi-agent technology to control and coordinate multiple AUVs in communication deficient environments. By incorporating real time vehicle prediction, blackboardbased hierarchical mission plans and mission optimisation in conjunction with a simple broadcast communication system this system aims to handle the limitations inherent in underwater operations and intelligently control multiple vehicles. In this research efficiency is evaluated and then compared to the current state of the art in multiple AUV control. The research is then validated in real AUV coordination trials. Results will show that compared to the state of the art the control system developed and implemented in this research coordinates multiple vehicles more efficiently and is able to function in a range of poor communication environments. These findings are supported by in water validation trials with heterogeneous AUVs. This thesis will first present an in depth state of the art of the related research topics including multi-agent systems, collaborative robotics and autonomous underwater vehicles. The development and functionality of this research will then be explained followed by a detailed description of the experiments. Results are then presented both for the simulated and real world trials followed by a discussion of the findings

    SWARM INTELLIGENCE AND STIGMERGY: ROBOTIC IMPLEMENTATION OF FORAGING BEHAVIOR

    Swarm intelligence in multi-robot systems has become an important area of research within collective robotics. Researchers have gained inspiration from biological systems and proposed a variety of industrial, commercial, and military robotics applications. In order to bridge the gap between theory and application, a strong focus is required on robotic implementation of swarm intelligence. To date, theoretical research and computer simulations in the field have dominated, with few successful demonstrations of swarm-intelligent robotic systems. In this thesis, a study of intelligent foraging behavior via indirect communication between simple individual agents is presented. Models of foraging are reviewed and analyzed with respect to the system dynamics and dependence on important parameters. Computer simulations are also conducted to gain an understanding of foraging behavior in systems with large populations. Finally, a novel robotic implementation is presented. The experiment successfully demonstrates cooperative group foraging behavior without direct communication. Trail-laying and trail-following are employed to produce the required stigmergic cooperation. Real robots are shown to achieve increased task efficiency, as a group, resulting from indirect interactions. Experimental results also confirm that trail-based group foraging systems can adapt to dynamic environments

    The suitability of the dendritic cell algorithm for robotic security applications

    The implementation and running of physical security systems is costly and potentially hazardous for those employed to patrol areas of interest. From a technial perspective, the physical security problem can be seen as minimising the probability that intruders and other anomalous events will occur unobserved. A robotic solution is proposed using an artificial immune system, traditionally applied to software security, to identify threats and hazards: the dendritic cell algorithm. It is demonstrated that the migration from the software world to the hardware world is achievable for this algorithm and key properties of the resulting system are explored empirically and theoretically. It is found that the algorithm has a hitherto unknown frequency-dependent component, making it ideal for filtering out sensor noise. Weaknesses of the algorithm are also discovered, by mathematically phrasing the signal processing phase as a collection of linear classifiers. It is concluded that traditional machine learning approaches are likely to outperform the implemented system in its current form. However, it is also observed that the algorithm’s inherent filtering characteristics make modification, rather than rejection, the most beneficial course of action. Hybridising the dendritic cell algorithm with more traditional machine learning techniques, through the introduction of a training phase and using a non-linear classification phase is suggested as a possible future direction
