The Internet-of-Things Meets Business Process Management: Mutual Benefits and Challenges
The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to a network of connected devices
collecting and exchanging data over the Internet. These things can be
artificial or natural, and interact as autonomous agents forming a complex
system. In turn, Business Process Management (BPM) was established to analyze,
discover, design, implement, execute, monitor and evolve collaborative business
processes within and across organizations. While the IoT and BPM have been
regarded as separate topics in research and practice, we strongly believe that
the management of IoT applications will strongly benefit from BPM concepts,
methods and technologies on the one hand; on the other one, the IoT poses
challenges that will require enhancements and extensions of the current
state-of-the-art in the BPM field. In this paper, we question to what extent
these two paradigms can be combined and we discuss the emerging challenges
Collocated Collaboration Analytics: Principles and Dilemmas for Mining Multimodal Interaction Data

Learning to collaborate effectively requires practice, awareness of group dynamics, and reflection; often it benefits from coaching by an expert facilitator. However, in physical spaces it is not always easy to provide teams with evidence to support collaboration. Emerging technology provides a promising opportunity to make collocated collaboration visible by harnessing data about interactions and then mining and visualizing it. These collocated collaboration analytics can help researchers, designers, and users to understand the complexity of collaboration and to find ways they can support collaboration. This article introduces and motivates a set of principles for mining collocated collaboration data and draws attention to trade-offs that may need to be negotiated en route. We integrate Data Science principles and techniques with the advances in interactive surface devices and sensing technologies. We draw on a 7-year research program that has involved the analysis of six group situations in collocated settings with more than 500 users and a variety of surface technologies, tasks, grouping structures, and domains. The contribution of the article includes the key insights and themes that we have identified and summarized in a set of principles and dilemmas that can inform design of future collocated collaboration analytics innovations
Opening the Black Box: Explaining the Process of Basing a Health Recommender System on the I-Change Behavioral Change Model
Recommender systems are gaining traction in healthcare because they can tailor recommendations
based on users' feedback concerning their appreciation of previous health-related messages. However,
recommender systems are often not grounded in behavioral change theories, which may further increase
the effectiveness of their recommendations. This paper's objective is to describe principles for designing
and developing a health recommender system grounded in the I-Change behavioral change model that
shall be implemented through a mobile app for a smoking cessation support clinical trial. We built upon
an existing smoking cessation health recommender system that delivered motivational messages through a
mobile app. A group of experts assessed how the system may be improved to address the behavioral change
determinants of the I-Change behavioral change model. The resulting system features a hybrid recommender
algorithm for computer tailoring smoking cessation messages. A total of 331 different motivational messages
were designed using 10 health communication methods. The algorithm was designed to match 58 message
characteristics to each user pro le by following the principles of the I-Change model and maintaining the
bene ts of the recommender system algorithms. The mobile app resulted in a streamlined version that aimed
to improve the user experience, and this system's design bridges the gap between health recommender
systems and the use of behavioral change theories. This article presents a novel approach integrating
recommender system technology, health behavior technology, and computer-tailored technology. Future

Supporting Governance in Healthcare Through Process Mining: A Case Study
Healthcare organizations are under increasing pressure to improve productivity, gain competitive
advantage and reduce costs. In many cases, despite management already gained some kind of qualitative
intuition about inefciencies and possible bottlenecks related to the enactment of patients' careows, it does
not have the right tools to extract knowledge from available data and make decisions based on a quantitative
analysis. To tackle this issue, starting from a real case study conducted in San Carlo di Nancy hospital in
Rome (Italy), this article presents the results of a process mining project in the healthcare domain. Process mining techniques are here used to infer meaningful knowledge about the patient careflows from raw event logs consisting of clinical data stored by the hospital information systems. These event logs are analyzed using the ProM framework from three different perspectives: the control flow perspective, the organizational perspective and the performance perspective. The results on the proposed case study show that process mining provided useful insights for the governance of the hospital. In particular, we were able to provide answers to the management of the hospital concerning the value of last investments, and the temporal distribution of abandonments from emergency room and exams without reservation

The Multimodal Tutor: Adaptive Feedback from Multimodal Experiences
This doctoral thesis describes the journey of ideation, prototyping and empirical testing of the Multimodal Tutor, a system designed for providing digital feedback that supports psychomotor skills acquisition using learning and multimodal data capturing. The feedback is given in real-time with machine-driven assessment of the learner's task execution. The predictions are tailored by supervised machine learning models trained with human annotated samples. The main contributions of this thesis are: a literature survey on multimodal data for learning, a conceptual model (the Multimodal Learning Analytics Model), a technological framework (the Multimodal Pipeline), a data annotation tool (the Visual Inspection Tool) and a case study in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation training (CPR Tutor). The CPR Tutor generates real-time, adaptive feedback using kinematic and myographic data and neural networks
Efficacy of Multisensory Technology in Post-Stroke Cognitive Rehabilitation: A Systematic Review
Post-stroke, in addition to sensorimotor signs and symptoms, could lead to cognitive deficits. Theories of embodiment stress the role of sensorimotor system and multisensory integration in sustaining high-order cognitive domains. Despite conventional post-stroke cognitive rehabilitation being effective, innovative technologies could overcome some limitations of standard interventions and exploit bodily information during cognitive rehabilitation. This systematic review aims to investigate whether ‘multisensory technologies’ compared to usual care treatment can be a viable alternative for cognitive rehabilitation. By applying PRISMA guidelines, we extracted data and assessed the bias of 10 studies that met the required criteria. We found that multisensory technologies were at least comparable to standard treatment but particularly effective for attention, spatial cognition, global cognition, and memory. Multisensory technologies consisted principally of virtual reality alone or combined with a motion tracking system. Multisensory technologies without motion tracking were more effective than standard procedures, whereas those with motion tracking showed balanced results for the two treatments. Limitations of the included studies regarded the population (e.g., no study on acute stroke), assessment (e.g., lack of multimodal/multisensory pre-post evaluation), and methodology (e.g., sample size, blinding bias).
