    Collecting Data About Logic Simulation

    Design of high performance hardware and software based gate-switch level logic simulators requires knowledge about the logic simulation process itself. Unfortunately, little data is publically available concerning key aspects of this process. An example of this is the lack of published empirical measurements relating to the time distribution of events generated by such simulators. This paper presents a gate-switch level logic simulator lsim which is oriented towards the collection of data about the simulation process. The basic components of lsim are reviewed, and its relevant data gathering facilities are discussed. An example is presented which illustrates the use of lsim in gathering data on event distributions and on communications requirements under alternative logic circuit partitionings

    Evaluations of gaming simulations and business games as teaching devices are typically end-state driven. This emphasis fails to detect how the simulation being evaluated does or does not bring about its desired consequences. This paper advances the use of a logic model approach which possesses a holistic perspective that aims at including all elements associated with the situation created by a game. The use of the logic model approach is illustrated as applied to Simgame, a board game created for secondary school level business education in six European Union countries

    The field oriented control of a permanent magnet synchrounous motor (PMSM) by using fuzzy logic

    This project presents the comprehensive performance analysis on the principle of operation, design considerations and control algorithms of the field oriented control (FOC) for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive system of Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) and proportional-integral PI for speed control in closed loop operation. To perform speed control of typical PMSM drives, PI controllers and FOC method are classically used. PI Controller controller suffers from the drawback that for its proper performance, the limits of the controller gains and the rate at which they would change have to be appropriately chosen. Fuzzy based gain scheduling of PI controller has been proposed in which uses in order to overcome the PI speed controller problem. The simulation results show that the proposed FLC speed controller produce significant improvement control performance compare to the PI controller. FLC speed controller produced a better performance than PI speed controller where the overshoot is totally removed and the settling time faster than PI speed controller in achieving desired output speed. The fuzzy algorithm is based on human intuition and experience and can be regarded as a set of heuristic decision rules. It is possible to obtain very good performance in the presence of varying load conditions changes of mechanical parameters and inaccuracy in the process modelling. Research and application of fuzzy logic are developing very rapidly, with promising impacts on electric drives and power electronics in future. Keywords: FOC, PMSM, FLC, PI and for Speed Control

    A Rewriting-Logic-Based Technique for Modeling Thermal Systems

    This paper presents a rewriting-logic-based modeling and analysis technique for physical systems, with focus on thermal systems. The contributions of this paper can be summarized as follows: (i) providing a framework for modeling and executing physical systems, where both the physical components and their physical interactions are treated as first-class citizens; (ii) showing how heat transfer problems in thermal systems can be modeled in Real-Time Maude; (iii) giving the implementation in Real-Time Maude of a basic numerical technique for executing continuous behaviors in object-oriented hybrid systems; and (iv) illustrating these techniques with a set of incremental case studies using realistic physical parameters, with examples of simulation and model checking analyses.Comment: In Proceedings RTRTS 2010, arXiv:1009.398

    Sub-nanosecond signal propagation in anisotropy engineered nanomagnetic logic chains

    Energy efficient nanomagnetic logic (NML) computing architectures propagate and process binary information by relying on dipolar field coupling to reorient closely-spaced nanoscale magnets. Signal propagation in nanomagnet chains of various sizes, shapes, and magnetic orientations has been previously characterized by static magnetic imaging experiments with low-speed adiabatic operation; however the mechanisms which determine the final state and their reproducibility over millions of cycles in high-speed operation (sub-ns time scale) have yet to be experimentally investigated. Monitoring NML operation at its ultimate intrinsic speed reveals features undetectable by conventional static imaging including individual nanomagnetic switching events and systematic error nucleation during signal propagation. Here, we present a new study of NML operation in a high speed regime at fast repetition rates. We perform direct imaging of digital signal propagation in permalloy nanomagnet chains with varying degrees of shape-engineered biaxial anisotropy using full-field magnetic soft x-ray transmission microscopy after applying single nanosecond magnetic field pulses. Further, we use time-resolved magnetic photo-emission electron microscopy to evaluate the sub-nanosecond dipolar coupling signal propagation dynamics in optimized chains with 100 ps time resolution as they are cycled with nanosecond field pulses at a rate of 3 MHz. An intrinsic switching time of 100 ps per magnet is observed. These experiments, and accompanying macro-spin and micromagnetic simulations, reveal the underlying physics of NML architectures repetitively operated on nanosecond timescales and identify relevant engineering parameters to optimize performance and reliability.Comment: Main article (22 pages, 4 figures), Supplementary info (11 pages, 5 sections

    A semantical framework for the orchestration and choreography of web services

    Web Services are software services that can be advertised by providers and invoked by customers using Web technologies. This concept is currently carried further to address the composition of individual services through orchestration and choreography to services processes that communicate and interact with each other. We propose an ontology framework for these Web service processes that provides techniques for their description, matching, and composition. A description logic-based knowledge representation and reasoning framework provides the foundations. We will base this ontological framework on an operational model of service process behaviour and composition

    Realising the open virtual commissioning of modular automation systems

    To address the challenges in the automotive industry posed by the need to rapidly manufacture more product variants, and the resultant need for more adaptable production systems, radical changes are now required in the way in which such systems are developed and implemented. In this context, two enabling approaches for achieving more agile manufacturing, namely modular automation systems and virtual commissioning, are briefly reviewed in this contribution. Ongoing research conducted at Loughborough University which aims to provide a modular approach to automation systems design coupled with a virtual engineering toolset for the (re)configuration of such manufacturing automation systems is reported. The problems faced in the virtual commissioning of modular automation systems are outlined. AutomationML - an emerging neutral data format which has potential to address integration problems is discussed. The paper proposes and illustrates a collaborative framework in which AutomationML is adopted for the data exchange and data representation of related models to enable efficient open virtual prototype construction and virtual commissioning of modular automation systems. A case study is provided to show how to create the data model based on AutomationML for describing a modular automation system
