    Possibilities of using graphical and numerical tools in the exposition of process capability assessment techniques

    Purpose: The paper focuses on how the problem of process capability assessment can be handled when taught, using convenient numerical and graphical means. The contents of the paper results from the authors' own academic and practical experience, which suggested that many important steps are overlooked in the process of selecting and using capability indices. Methodology/Approach: Selected problems in capability assessment are illustrated with suitable examples and graphs. Findings: The authors' experience is reflected in the paper, aiming to emphasize what matters and how, and what does not. Also, a new capability index is introduced. Research Limitation/implication: The style in which the problems are analysed may serve as a guide for further studies in the field and capability index applications. Originality/Value of paper: The paper also contains, aside from specific examples, some more advanced techniques, and is therefore accompanied by software readouts, since computer support is required in such cases.     Transformational leadership and innovation at the Lebanese banking industry

    Purpose: Transformational leadership (TL) has been recognized as one of the most important factor influencing innovation. It is argued that this style plays an essential role in developing the process, structure and climate for organizations to become innovative. This research aims to examine the impact of TL on two aspects of innovation namely product and process innovation. Design/Methodology/Approach: The quantitative and explanatory analysis was taken by using the Structural equations modeling (SEM) with AMOS 20 to examine the relationship between TL and innovation. Research data were collected through a survey method. The sample result was determined by the probability stratified sampling technique of about 310 employees at 27 banks in Lebanon. Findings: The findings confirmed the importance of TL in enhancing innovation in banking sector. The main implication of the research highlights that individualized consideration is the most important predictor of product and process innovation followed by, inspirational motivation and idealized influence, respectively, whereas, intellectual stimulation has insignificant influence on product and process innovation. Practical Implications: Findings point to how transformational style of leadership produce better outcomes for the banks by mobilizing employees to engage in innovative products and processes. Originality/Value: These findings extends the understanding of the processes through which transformational styles of leadership stimulate innovation, and also highlight the benefits gained by cultivating more transformational styles of leadership to generate more innovative outcomes.peer-reviewe

    Operational Capabilities: The Secret Ingredient

    We develop a theoretical definition of operational capabilities, based on the strategic management and operations management literature, and differentiate this construct from the related constructs of resources and operational practices, drawing upon the resourcebased view of the firm as our foundation. We illustrate the key features of operational capabilities using the illustration of a restaurant kitchen. Because the traits of operational capabilities are distinct, they create a barrier to imitation, making them a potential source of competitive advantage. However, operational capabilities are particularly challenging to measure, because they emerge gradually and are tacit, embedded, and manifested differently across firms. In solving this measurement conundrum, we draw upon similar situations experienced by Schein (2004) and Eisenhardt and Martin (2000) in operationalizing organizational culture and dynamic capabilities. A taxonomy of six emergent operational capabilities is developed: operational improvement, operational innovation, operational customization, operational cooperation, operational responsiveness, and operational reconfiguration. A set of measurement scales is developed, in order to measure each of the operational capabilities, and validated using two different datasets. This allows replication of the psychometric properties of the multi-item scales and helps to ensure the validity of the resulting measures

    Investigating the impact of networking capability on firm innovation performance:using the resource-action-performance framework

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Purpose The experience of successful firms has proven that one of the most important ways to promote co-learning and create successful networked innovations is the proper application of inter-organizational knowledge mechanisms. This study aims to use a resource-action-performance framework to open the black box on the relationship between networking capability and innovation performance. The research population embraces companies in the Iranian automotive industry. Design/methodology/approach Due to the latent nature of the variables studied, the required data are collected through a web-based cross-sectional survey. First, the content validity of the measurement tool is evaluated by experts. Then, a pre-test is conducted to assess the reliability of the measurement tool. All data are gathered by the Iranian Vehicle Manufacturers Association (IVMA) and Iranian Auto Parts Manufacturers Association (IAPMA) samples. The power analysis method and G*Power software are used to determine the sample size. Moreover, SmartPLS 3 and IBM SPSS 25 software are used for data analysis of the conceptual model and relating hypotheses. Findings The results of this study indicated that the relationships between networking capability, inter-organizational knowledge mechanisms and inter-organizational learning result in a self-reinforcing loop, with a marked impact on firm innovation performance. Originality/value Since there is little understanding of the interdependencies of networking capability, inter-organizational knowledge mechanisms, co-learning and their effect on firm innovation performance, most previous research studies have focused on only one or two of the above-mentioned variables. Thus, their cumulative effect has not examined yet. Looking at inter-organizational relationships from a network perspective and knowledge-based view (KBV), and to consider the simultaneous effect of knowledge mechanisms and learning as intermediary actions alongside, to consider the performance effect of the capability-building process, are the main advantages of this research

    In this paper the findings of an empirical study concerning the innovation determinants in manufacturing firms is presented. The empirical study covers 184 manufacturing firms located in the Northern Marmara region of Turkey. The types of innovation considered here are product, process, marketing and organizational innovations. An extensive literature survey on innovation determinants is provided. A model is proposed to explore the probable effects and the amount of contribution of the innovation determinants to firm’s innovativeness level. Among all possible determinants considered, intellectual capital has the highest impact on innovativeness followed by organization culture

    A Theoretical Foundation for the Development of Process Capability Indices and Process Parameters Optimization under Truncated and Censoring Schemes

    Process capability indices (PCIs) provide a measure of the output of an in-control process that conforms to a set of specification limits. These measures, which assume that process output is approximately normally distributed, are intended for measuring process capability for manufacturing systems. After implementing inspections, however, non-conforming products are typically scrapped when units fail to meet the specification limits; hence, after inspections, the actual resulting distribution of shipped products that customers perceive is truncated. In this research, a set of customer-perceived PCIs is developed focused on the truncated normal distribution, as an extension of traditional manufacturer-based indices. Comparative studies and numerical examples reveal considerable differences among the traditional PCIs and the proposed PCIs. The comparison results suggest using the proposed PCIs for capability analyses when non-conforming products are scrapped prior to shipping to customers. The confidence interval approximations for the proposed PCIs are also developed. A simulation technique is implemented to compare the proposed PCIs with its traditional counterparts across multiple performance scenarios. The robust parameter design (RPD), as a systematic method for determining the optimum operating conditions that achieve the quality improvement goals, is also studied within the realm of censored data. Data censoring occurs in time-oriented observations when some data is unmeasurable outside a predetermined study period. The underlying conceptual basis of the current RPD studies is the random sampling from a normal distribution, assuming that all the data points are uncensored. However, censoring schemes are widely implemented in lifetime testing, survival analysis, and reliability studies. As such, this study develops the detailed guidelines for a new RPD method with the consideration of type I-right censoring concepts. The response functions are developed using nonparametric methods, including the Kaplan-Meier estimator, Greenwood\u27s formula, and the Cox proportional hazards regression method. Various response-surface-based robust parameter design optimization models are proposed and are demonstrated through a numerical example. Further, the process capability index for type I-right censored data using the nonparametric methods is also developed for assessing the performance of a product based on its lifetime
