How to assess technological developments in basic research? Enabling formative interventions regarding sustainability, ethics, and consumer issues at an early stage
In an era of ever faster and more momentous technological development, both technology assessment and transdisciplinary interventions are in danger of structurally lagging behind the speed of innovation. This paper proposes a new tiered approach to technology assessment at low Technology Readiness Levels that enables a both rapid and concerted interdisciplinary science response to this Great Acceleration. Covering sustainability, ethics, and consumer issues, this approach encourages and enables the innovators themselves to conduct assessments embedded in the innovation process as early as possible. Suitable tools for early engagement that help facilitate development-integrated assessments are introduced and described. The design and use of these instruments in the field of basic research is illustrated using the Cluster of Excellence livMatS as an example.In einer Ăra immer rascherer und folgenreicherer technologischer Entwicklungen laufen sowohl die Technologiebewertung als auch transdisziplinĂ€re Interventionen Gefahr, strukturell hinter der Dynamik von Innovationen zurĂŒckzubleiben. In diesem Beitrag wird ein neuer gestufter Ansatz fĂŒr die TechnikfolgenabschĂ€tzung fĂŒr niedrige Technology Readiness Levels vorgeschlagen, der eine schnelle und konzertierte interdisziplinĂ€re Reaktion der Wissenschaft auf diese "groĂe Beschleunigung" ermöglicht. Dieser Ansatz, der Nachhaltigkeits-, Ethik- und Verbraucherfragen abdeckt, ermutigt und befĂ€higt die Innovatoren, in den Innovationsprozess eingebettete Bewertungen so frĂŒh wie möglich selbst durchzufĂŒhren. Geeignete Instrumente fĂŒr entwicklungsintegrierte Bewertungen werden vorgestellt und beschrieben. Geo-cultural influences and critical factors in inter-firm collaboration
Inter-firm collaboration and other forms of inter-organisational activity are increasingly the means by which technological innovation occurs. This paper draws on evidence from two studies of the same set of firms to examine the conduct of collaborations over time across different contexts. The purpose is to examine the critical factors associated with successful collaboration and explore the importance of the geo-cultural context in understanding the conduct of inter-firm collaboration. The conceptual framework draws on two main sources: - Storperâs concept of âconventionsâ of identity and participation and Lorenzâs classification of different types of knowledge. These are used to indicate the kinds and sources of adjustments required for successful collaboration

Peer reviews: What can we learn from our students?
This paper describes lessons learnt whilst using an online peer review system in an undergraduate unit for pre-service teachers. In this unit students learn to use information technologies as part of their future teaching practice. The unit aims to foster graduates who become life-long reflective educators by providing opportunities to explore and reflect on how they might use technology in authentic learning situations. Whilst peer review is an appropriate activity for supporting critical thinking and reflective practice in this kind of unit, it requires a number of decisions to be made in relation to student preparation and support, implementation strategy, and technological infrastructure to make it work in specific contexts. Much research has been conducted in recent years to inform educators in making these decisions. However, there are still gaps in the research, particularly in how to improve the quality and consistency of feedback that students give to each other in their feedback. This paper describes the experiences of implementing an online peer review system aiming to improve quality and consistency of feedback. This exploration has revealed that we can learn much about ways to improve our teaching practices by giving students an opportunity to review each otherâs work and give each other feedback
Values, ethics and empowering the self through cooperative education
Following the recent global financial crisis and the collapse of major organisations such as Lehman Brothers, and the earlier corporate failings of Enron and HIH, there has been a shift of focus towards the role of ethics education in the formation of business professionals. In other professional settings, such as policing and medicine, similar major crises have highlighted the significance of the early development of ethical practice in emerging professionals. This paper considers the nature of professional ethics for an emerging professional, arguing that professional ethics should be a key factor in cooperative education programs. The paper considers the role of values and ethics education in empowering the emerging professional to shape and change their workplace. Building on this argument, the paper suggests foundational elements of an approach to professional ethics in cooperative education programs concluding with a suggested research path for further exploration of the content and nature of such an approach
Analysis and Synthesis of Metadata Goals for Scientific Data
The proliferation of discipline-specific metadata schemes contributes to artificial barriers that can impede interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. The authors considered this problem by examining the domains, objectives, and architectures of nine metadata schemes used to document scientific data in the physical, life, and social sciences. They used a mixed-methods content analysis and Greenbergâs (2005) metadata objectives, principles, domains, and architectural layout (MODAL) framework, and derived 22 metadata-related goals from textual content describing each metadata scheme. Relationships are identified between the domains (e.g., scientific discipline and type of data) and the categories of scheme objectives. For each strong correlation (\u3e0.6), a Fisherâs exact test for nonparametric data was used to determine significance (p \u3c .05).
Significant relationships were found between the domains and objectives of the schemes. Schemes describing observational data are more likely to have âscheme harmonizationâ (compatibility and interoperability with related schemes) as an objective; schemes with the objective âabstractionâ (a conceptual model exists separate from the technical implementation) also have the objective âsufficiencyâ (the scheme defines a minimal amount of information to meet the needs of the community); and schemes with the objective âdata publicationâ do not have the objective âelement refinement.â The analysis indicates that many metadata-driven goals expressed by communities are independent of scientific discipline or the type of data, although they are constrained by historical community practices and workflows as well as the technological environment at the time of scheme creation. The analysis reveals 11 fundamental metadata goals for metadata documenting scientific data in support of sharing research data across disciplines and domains. The authors report these results and highlight the need for more metadata-related research, particularly in the context of recent funding agency policy changes
