Multi-task Implementation for Image Reconstruction of an AER Communication
Address-Event-Representation (AER) is a communication protocol
for transferring spikes between bio-inspired chips. Such systems may consist of
a hierarchical structure with several chips that transmit spikes among them in
real time, while performing some processing. There exist several AER tools to
help in developing and testing AER based systems. These tools require the use
of a computer to allow the processing of the event information, reaching very
high bandwidth at the AER communication level. We propose to use an
embedded platform based on multi-task operating system to allow both, the
AER communication and the AER processing without a laptop or a computer.
We have connected and programmed a Gumstix computer to process Address-
Event information and measured the performance referred to the previous AER
tools solutions. In this paper, we present and study the performance of a new
philosophy of a frame-grabber AER tool based on a multi-task environment,
composed by the Intel XScale processor governed by an embedded GNU/Linux

Computing infrastructure issues in distributed communications systems : a survey of operating system transport system architectures
The performance of distributed applications (such as file transfer, remote login, tele-conferencing, full-motion video, and scientific visualization) is influenced by several factors that interact in complex ways. In particular, application performance is significantly affected both by communication infrastructure factors and computing infrastructure factors. Several communication infrastructure factors include channel speed, bit-error rate, and congestion at intermediate switching nodes. Computing infrastructure factors include (among other things) both protocol processing activities (such as connection management, flow control, error detection, and retransmission) and general operating system factors (such as memory latency, CPU speed, interrupt and context switching overhead, process architecture, and message buffering). Due to a several orders of magnitude increase in network channel speed and an increase in application diversity, performance bottlenecks are shifting from the network factors to the transport system factors.This paper defines an abstraction called an "Operating System Transport System Architecture" (OSTSA) that is used to classify the major components and services in the computing infrastructure. End-to-end network protocols such as TCP, TP4, VMTP, XTP, and Delta-t typically run on general-purpose computers, where they utilize various operating system resources such as processors, virtual memory, and network controllers. The OSTSA provides services that integrate these resources to support distributed applications running on local and wide area networks.A taxonomy is presented to evaluate OSTSAs in terms of their support for protocol processing activities. We use this taxonomy to compare and contrast five general-purpose commercial and experimental operating systems including System V UNIX, BSD UNIX, the x-kernel, Choices, and Xinu

CAN Fieldbus Communication in the CSP-based CT Library
In closed-loop control systems several realworld entities are simultaneously communicated to through a multitude of spatially distributed sensors and actuators. This intrinsic parallelism and complexity motivates implementing control software in the form of concurrent processes deployed on distributed hardware architectures. Spike Processing on an Embedded Multi-task Computer: Image Reconstruction
There is an emerging philosophy, called Neuro-informatics, contained
in the Artificial Intelligence field, that aims to emulate how living beings do tasks
such as taking a decision based on the interpretation of an image by emulating spiking
neurons into VLSI designs and, therefore, trying to re-create the human brain at
its highest level. Address-Event-Representation (AER) is a communication protocol

Efficient Resource Management Mechanism for 802.16 Wireless Networks Based on Weighted Fair Queuing
Wireless Networking continues on its path of being one of the most commonly used means of communication. The evolution of this technology has taken place through the design of various protocols. Some common wireless protocols are the WLAN, 802.16 or WiMAX, and the emerging 802.20, which specializes in high speed vehicular networks, taking the concept from 802.16 to higher levels of performance. As with any large network, congestion becomes an important issue. Congestion gains importance as more hosts join a wireless network. In most cases, congestion is caused by the lack of an efficient mechanism to deal with exponential increases in host devices. This can effectively lead to very huge bottlenecks in the network causing slow sluggish performance, which may eventually reduce the speed of the network. With continuous advancement being the trend in this technology, the proposal of an efficient scheme for wireless resource allocation is an important solution to the problem of congestion. The primary area of focus will be the emerging standard for wireless networks, the 802.16 or “WiMAX”. Parallel memetic algorithms for independent job scheduling in computational grids
In this chapter we present parallel implementations of Memetic Algorithms (MAs) for the problem of scheduling independent jobs in computational grids. The problem of scheduling in computational grids is known for its high demanding computational time. In this work we exploit the intrinsic parallel nature of MAs as well as the fact that computational grids offer large amount of resources, a part of which could be used to compute the efficient allocation of jobs to grid resources.
The parallel models exploited in this work for MAs include both fine-grained and coarse-grained parallelization and their hybridization. The resulting schedulers have been tested through different grid scenarios generated by a grid simulator to match different possible configurations of computational grids in terms of size (number of jobs and resources) and computational characteristics of resources. All in all, the result of this work showed that Parallel MAs are very good alternatives in order to match different performance requirement on fast scheduling of jobs to grid resources.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Real-time and fault tolerance in distributed control software
Closed loop control systems typically contain multitude of spatially distributed sensors and actuators operated simultaneously. So those systems are parallel and distributed in their essence. But mapping this parallelism onto the given distributed hardware architecture, brings in some additional requirements: safe multithreading, optimal process allocation, real-time scheduling of bus and network resources. Nowadays, fault tolerance methods and fast even online reconfiguration are becoming increasingly important. All those often conflicting requirements, make design and implementation of real-time distributed control systems an extremely difficult task, that requires substantial knowledge in several areas of control and computer science. Although many design methods have been proposed so far, none of them had succeeded to cover all important aspects of the problem at hand. Mesmerizer: A Effective Tool for a Complete Peer-to-Peer Software Development Life-cycle
In this paper we present what are, in our experience, the best
practices in Peer-To-Peer(P2P) application development and
how we combined them in a middleware platform called Mesmerizer. We explain how simulation is an integral part of
the development process and not just an assessment tool.
We then present our component-based event-driven framework for P2P application development, which can be used
to execute multiple instances of the same application in a
strictly controlled manner over an emulated network layer
for simulation/testing, or a single application in a concurrent
environment for deployment purpose. We highlight modeling aspects that are of critical importance for designing and
testing P2P applications, e.g. the emulation of Network Address Translation and bandwidth dynamics. We show how
our simulator scales when emulating low-level bandwidth
characteristics of thousands of concurrent peers while preserving a good degree of accuracy compared to a packet-level
simulator
