An oriented-design simplified model for the efficiency of a flat plate solar air collector
In systems design, suitably adapted physical models are required. Different modelling approaches for a solar air collector were studied in this paper. First, a classical model was produced, based on a linearization of the conservation of energy equations. Its resolution used traditional matrix methods. In order to improve the possibilities for use in design, the behaviour of the collector was next expressed in terms of efficiency. Lastly, simplified models constructed from the results obtained with the classical linearized model, and explicitly including the design variables of the collector, were proposed. These reduced models were then evaluated in terms of Parsimony, Exactness, Precision and Specialisation (PEPS). It was concluded that one of them (D2), using a low number of variables and of equations, is well suited for the design of solar air collector coupled with other sub-systems in more complex devices such as solar kiln with energy storag
Privacy compliance verification in cryptographic protocols
To provide privacy protection, cryptographic primitives are frequently applied to communication protocols in an open environment (e.g. the Internet). We call these protocols privacy enhancing protocols (PEPs) which constitute a class of cryptographic protocols. Proof of the security properties, in terms of the privacy compliance, of PEPs is desirable before they can be deployed. However, the traditional provable security approach, though well-established for proving the security of cryptographic primitives, is not applicable to PEPs. We apply the formal language of Coloured Petri Nets (CPNs) to construct an executable specification of a representative PEP, namely the Private Information Escrow Bound to Multiple Conditions Protocol (PIEMCP). Formal semantics of the CPN specification allow us to reason about various privacy properties of PIEMCP using state space analysis techniques. This investigation provides insights into the modelling and analysis of PEPs in general, and demonstrates the benefit of applying a CPN-based formal approach to the privacy compliance verification of PEPs
Investigation of capabilities of electromagnetic tomography for pipeline imaging
In industrial process, pipeline leakage often only noticeable pipe condition is critical henceforth causing damages to its internal content. Therefore, pipeline inspection and monitoring work is highly demanding to take early precautions. Electromagnetic Tomography (EMT) is capable to produce images of the internal structure of an object by using external sensors without disrupting it. The coil sensors are placed around the object where the source coil transmits an oscillating magnetic field while the rest acts as receiver and measure the received signals. The measured signal provides the magnetic field distribution of the pipe, and will differ according to the materials’ passive electrical properties. In this paper, we investigate the capability of using EMT to identify metallic pipe openings by conducting a finite element analysis simulation study. The design and parameters of the EMT system, as well as the results of using the EMT model to detect various degree of metallic pipe openings is presented. The results confirm that the EMT imaging as a promising tool for inspection of metallic pipelines where the magnetic field of the investigated region differs according to the pipe opening and material of the pipeline
Manufacturing code generation for rotational parts in a feature based product modelling environment
An important element for the integration of CAD/CAM is the representation and handling
of data used during the design and manufacturing activities. The use of features and product
modelling techniques bring a better handling of this data and provide CAD/CAM with an excellent
platform for integration. The thesis explores the use of a predefined set of features in a product
modelling environment for the design and machining of rotational components.
Theword features in this research implies a set of functional, geometrical and technological
information with a unique form. Those features are pre-defined and comprise of a limited number
of elements which carry the information related to design and manufacturing activities.
The thesis is divided into three main parts. The first part contains a review of topics related
to the research e. g. group technology, component features, CAD/CAM and also contains a
literature survey of related research works.
In the second part the "features" are defined and presented. Also the product modelling
environment is explained and the basic rule based procedures which are used to automatize
the operation planning activities are presented.
In the last part a description of the case-studies used for automatic NC code generation
is presented followed by a discussion of the results. Lastly, the conclusions are drawn and ideas
for further work presented
Parallelization of a relaxation scheme modelling the bedload transport of sediments in shallow water flow
In this work we are interested in numerical simulations for bedload erosion
processes. We present a relaxation solver that we apply to moving dunes test
cases in one and two dimensions. In particular we retrieve the so-called
anti-dune process that is well described in the experiments. In order to be
able to run 2D test cases with reasonable CPU time, we also describe and apply
a parallelization procedure by using domain decomposition based on the
classical MPI library.Comment: 19 page
