MASTERING ADAPTIVE HYPERMEDIA COURSEWARE
One of the still open gaps in modern e-learning platforms is the lack of adaptation of learning process regarding well-structured learner models. The paper presents an adaptive model of
hypermedia learning courseware and the processes of its construction and delivery. Next, it sketches the software architecture of an adaptive hypermedia system (AHS) being under development at Sofia University, Bulgaria. Unlike other AHS, the present one does support of adaptive navigation,
presentation and content selection without defining complex rules for controlling narrative storyboards. There are discussed authoring and instructional design of hypermedia courseware for adaptive delivery, and the work process of the adaptive engine for delivering learning objects in a
way adapted to a well-structured learner model. In order to illustrate our prototype, we provide UML use case diagrams of the authoring and instructor’s application and, as well, explanation of the workflow of the adaptation engine
Advanced Turbine Technology Applications Project (ATTAP)
ATTAP activities during the past year were highlighted by an extensive materials assessment, execution of a reference powertrain design, test-bed engine design and development, ceramic component design, materials and component characterization, ceramic component process development and fabrication, component rig design and fabrication, test-bed engine fabrication, and hot gasifier rig and engine testing. Materials assessment activities entailed engine environment evaluation of domestically supplied radial gasifier turbine rotors that were available at the conclusion of the Advanced Gas Turbine (AGT) Technology Development Project as well as an extensive survey of both domestic and foreign ceramic suppliers and Government laboratories performing ceramic materials research applicable to advanced heat engines. A reference powertrain design was executed to reflect the selection of the AGT-5 as the ceramic component test-bed engine for the ATTAP. Test-bed engine development activity focused on upgrading the AGT-5 from a 1038 C (1900 F) metal engine to a durable 1371 C (2500 F) structural ceramic component test-bed engine. Ceramic component design activities included the combustor, gasifier turbine static structure, and gasifier turbine rotor. The materials and component characterization efforts have included the testing and evaluation of several candidate ceramic materials and components being developed for use in the ATTAP. Ceramic component process development and fabrication activities were initiated for the gasifier turbine rotor, gasifier turbine vanes, gasifier turbine scroll, extruded regenerator disks, and thermal insulation. Component rig development activities included combustor, hot gasifier, and regenerator rigs. Test-bed engine fabrication activities consisted of the fabrication of an all-new AGT-5 durability test-bed engine and support of all engine test activities through instrumentation/build/repair. Selecting Web Services with Security Compliances: A Managerial Perspective
This paper proposes a framework of a decision support system (DSS) for the assessment process of selecting Web services with security compliances consistent with the enterprise business goal. The proposed DSS framework is a systematic assessment model which could aid IS managers in making decision on which Web services would most likely meet the security requirements of their information systems. The proposed process is based on the standard ISO/IEC 15408, the Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation. The framework consists of five components: (i) Identification of security objectives; (ii) Formulation of criteria; (iii) Selection of candidate Web services; (iv) Security profiling of Web services; and (v) Variance analysis engine. The framework is presented with a running example to demonstrate the applicability of the approach
User Satisfaction in Competitive Sponsored Search
We present a model of competition between web search algorithms, and study
the impact of such competition on user welfare. In our model, search providers
compete for customers by strategically selecting which search results to
display in response to user queries. Customers, in turn, have private
preferences over search results and will tend to use search engines that are
more likely to display pages satisfying their demands.
Our main question is whether competition between search engines increases the
overall welfare of the users (i.e., the likelihood that a user finds a page of
interest). When search engines derive utility only from customers to whom they
show relevant results, we show that they differentiate their results, and every
equilibrium of the resulting game achieves at least half of the welfare that
could be obtained by a social planner. This bound also applies whenever the
likelihood of selecting a given engine is a convex function of the probability
that a user's demand will be satisfied, which includes natural Markovian models
of user behavior.
On the other hand, when search engines derive utility from all customers
(independent of search result relevance) and the customer demand functions are
not convex, there are instances in which the (unique) equilibrium involves no
differentiation between engines and a high degree of randomness in search
results. This can degrade social welfare by a factor of the square root of N
relative to the social optimum, where N is the number of webpages. These bad
equilibria persist even when search engines can extract only small (but
non-zero) expected revenue from dissatisfied users, and much higher revenue
from satisfied ones

Game-Based Learning in Engineering Education
The new generation of undergraduates entering UK higher education have grown up with computer games of ever increasing sophistication. In this educational project a race game, Racing Academy, was developed to investigate how game technology and gaming communities could enhance undergraduate engineering education. The computer game embodied the principles of engineering dynamics to simulate and display in real time a car drag race in which students ‘designed’ their car by selecting an engine, tyres and gearbox from a set menu. The aim was to complete a set course in the minimum time and graphically display the dynamic performance in order to better understand the engineering system. The students and staff involved in this project provided extensive feedback on the exercise and identified the visual nature of game-based learning software as a positive feature that helped illustrate engineering dynamics. Game-based learning communities, organised around tutor groups, were seen as an excellent way of encouraging an element of competition in a small non-threatening environment while discussion forums based around Moodle provided efficient support for the large group of 160 students. Finally, learning through ‘doing’ in a game environment was proven to be a successful method of illustrating physical phenomena
