Coordinating Large Distributed Process Structures
Representing a business process as interacting small processes has become feasible with data-centric business process management paradigms. These small processes have relations and, thereby, form a relational process structure. The interactions of processes within this relational process structure must be coordinated to arrive at a meaningful overall business goal. However, relational process structures may become arbitrarily large and, with cloud technology, they may additionally be distributed over multiple nodes. Coordination processes have been proposed to coordinate relational process structures, where processes have one-to-many and many-to-many relations at run-time. This paper shows how multiple coordination processes can be used in a decentralized fashion to coordinate large, distributed process structures. The main challenge is to effectively realize the coordination responsibility of each coordination process. Key components of the solution are the subsidiary principle and the hierarchy of the relational process structure. Moreover, from these key components and the technical properties of coordination processes, an implementation based on microservices was developed, which allows fast and concurrent enactment of multiple, decentralized coordination processes in large, distributed process structures

A Mobile Agent Approach to Lightweight Process Workflow
The Programming Systems Lab at Columbia University has investigated software process modeling and enactment since its inception in the mid-1980s, initially in the Marvel project. In the early to mid-90s, we extended to cross-organizational processes operating over the Internet, in Oz and OzWeb. The successive prototype frameworks we developed and demonstrated were used on a daily basis in-house to maintain, deploy and monitor their own components, APIs and user interfaces. The new process technology first presented here is broadly based on our decade of research on and experimentation with architecting and using such prototype services and software development processes targeted to Internet/Web middleware and applications, but reflects a major departure from our own (and others') previous directions. In particular, current process and workflow systems, including our own, are often too rigid for open-ended creative intellectual work, unable to rapidly adapt either the models or the enactment to situational context and/or user role. On the other hand, the process/workflow ideal implies a flexible mechanism for composition and coordination of information system components. We now present our in-progress development of rehostable lightweight mobile agents for on-the-fly process construction, adaptation and evolution, system reconfiguration, and knowledge propagation
Web Services Support for Dynamic Business Process Outsourcing
Outsourcing of business processes is crucial for organizations to be effective, efficient and flexible. To meet fast-changing market conditions, dynamic outsourcing is required, in which business relationships are established and enacted on-the-fly in an adaptive, fine-grained way unrestricted by geographic distance. This requires automated means for both the establishment of outsourcing relationships and for the enactment of services performed in these relationships over electronic channels. Due to wide industry support and the underlying model of loose coupling of services, Web services increasingly become the mechanism of choice to connect organizations across organizational boundaries. This paper analyzes to which extent Web services support the dynamic process outsourcing paradigm. We discuss contract -based dynamic business process outsourcing to define requirements and then introduce the Web services framework. Based on this, we investigate the match between the two. We observe that the Web services framework requires further support for cross - organizational business processes and mechanisms for contracting, QoS management and process-based transaction support and suggest ways to fill those gaps
Elastic Business Process Management: State of the Art and Open Challenges for BPM in the Cloud
With the advent of cloud computing, organizations are nowadays able to react
rapidly to changing demands for computational resources. Not only individual
applications can be hosted on virtual cloud infrastructures, but also complete
business processes. This allows the realization of so-called elastic processes,
i.e., processes which are carried out using elastic cloud resources. Despite
the manifold benefits of elastic processes, there is still a lack of solutions
supporting them.
In this paper, we identify the state of the art of elastic Business Process
Management with a focus on infrastructural challenges. We conceptualize an
architecture for an elastic Business Process Management System and discuss
existing work on scheduling, resource allocation, monitoring, decentralized
coordination, and state management for elastic processes. Furthermore, we
present two representative elastic Business Process Management Systems which
are intended to counter these challenges. Based on our findings, we identify
open issues and outline possible research directions for the realization of

A multi-agent based system to enable strategic and operational design coordination
This paper presents two systems which individually focus on different aspects of design coordination, namely strategic and operational. The systems were developed in parallel and individually contain related models that represent specific frames from a Design Coordination Framework developed by Andreasen et al. [1]. The focus of the strategic design management system is the management of design tasks, decisions, information, goals and rationale within the design process, whereas the focus of the operational design coordination system is the coordination of tasks and activities with respect to the near-optimal utilisation of available resources. A common interface exists which enables the two systems to be integrated and used as a single system with the aim of managing both strategicand operational design coordination. Hence, the objective of this work is to enable the design process to be conducted in a timely and appropriate manner

Exposing piaget's scheme: Empirical evidence for the ontogenesis of coordination in learning a mathematical concept
The combination of two methodological resources-natural-user interfaces (NUI) and multimodal learning analytics (MMLA)-is creating opportunities for educational researchers to empirically evaluate seminal models for the hypothetical emergence of concepts from situated sensorimotor activity. 76 participants (9-14 yo) solved tablet-based non-symbolic manipulation tasks designed to foster grounded meanings for the mathematical concept of proportional equivalence. Data gathered in task-based semi-structured clinical interviews included action logging, eye-gaze tracking, and videography. Successful task performance coincided with spontaneous appearance of stable dynamical gaze-path patterns soon followed by multimodal articulation of strategy. Significantly, gaze patterns included uncued non-salient screen locations. We present cumulative results to argue that these 'attentional anchors' mediated participants' problem solving. We interpret the findings as enabling us to revisit, support, refine, and elaborate on central claims of Piaget's theory of genetic epistemology and in particular his insistence on the role of situated motor-action coordination in the process of reflective abstraction
Decentralised governance and planning in India: case study of a tribal district
This paper examines the process of the formulation of decentralised planning in the Tribal regions of Odisha, a state located in eastern part of India, while examining the powers devolved to the local governments in such regions in the state to formulate plan, and the ground reality of the preparation of such plans in the context of the implementation of the Provisions of Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act (PESA Act). Formulation of decentralised planning in Odisha was taken up in the year 2008. However, based on the secondary data and interacting with the various people in field, the paper has revealed that “structural impediments” and “functional incapacity” of the local governments in the Scheduled Areas have hampered the spirit of such institutions with regard to the planning and implementation of the development programs. The paper argues that decentralised plans should be realistic, based on the effective utilisation of local resources, and the local development issues should be prioritised and implemented accordingly. The paper suggests policy measures such as effective participation, prioritisation of development needs, and rationalisation of the required and available funds, considering the significance of the PESA Act. While doing so, the issues of the tribals should receive priority
