    Resilient and Scalable Forwarding for Software-Defined Networks with P4-Programmable Switches

    Traditional networking devices support only fixed features and limited configurability. Network softwarization leverages programmable software and hardware platforms to remove those limitations. In this context the concept of programmable data planes allows directly to program the packet processing pipeline of networking devices and create custom control plane algorithms. This flexibility enables the design of novel networking mechanisms where the status quo struggles to meet high demands of next-generation networks like 5G, Internet of Things, cloud computing, and industry 4.0. P4 is the most popular technology to implement programmable data planes. However, programmable data planes, and in particular, the P4 technology, emerged only recently. Thus, P4 support for some well-established networking concepts is still lacking and several issues remain unsolved due to the different characteristics of programmable data planes in comparison to traditional networking. The research of this thesis focuses on two open issues of programmable data planes. First, it develops resilient and efficient forwarding mechanisms for the P4 data plane as there are no satisfying state of the art best practices yet. Second, it enables BIER in high-performance P4 data planes. BIER is a novel, scalable, and efficient transport mechanism for IP multicast traffic which has only very limited support of high-performance forwarding platforms yet. The main results of this thesis are published as 8 peer-reviewed and one post-publication peer-reviewed publication. The results cover the development of suitable resilience mechanisms for P4 data planes, the development and implementation of resilient BIER forwarding in P4, and the extensive evaluations of all developed and implemented mechanisms. Furthermore, the results contain a comprehensive P4 literature study. Two more peer-reviewed papers contain additional content that is not directly related to the main results. They implement congestion avoidance mechanisms in P4 and develop a scheduling concept to find cost-optimized load schedules based on day-ahead forecasts

    Nesta comunicação apresenta-se uma experiência de gamificação realizada numa turma online, numa Universidade Virtual. Foram utilizados como elementos de jogo pontos, badges, leadboard, avatares e desafios. Do ponto de vista do desenho da unidade curricular, foi proposto um desafio global, sob a forma de roleplaying, que percorreu todo o semestre. Para este desafio global contribuíram três outros desafios, nos quais os estudantes deveriam dinamizar discussões, sendo atribuídos pontos e badges em função da sua prestação. No que se refere à metodologia, tratou-se de uma investigação exploratória, com carácter qualitativo. Como técnicas de recolha de dados, privilegiou-se a observação, realizada durante toda a unidade curricular, complementada por um questionário aos estudantes no final do semestre. Constatou-se que a estratégia adotada incentivou a participação ativa dos estudantes, tendo estes gostado da experiência. Verificaram-se, contudo, algumas limitações, pelo facto de os estudantes desta amostra serem adultos trabalhadores a frequentar uma licenciatura online, com outros compromissos profissionais e familiares. Com efeito, verificou-se que vários deles mencionaram ter dificuldade na gestão do tempo, limitando a possibilidade de adesão a um percurso exigente em termos de participação ativa.In this paper, we present a gamification experiment that took place in an online class at a virtual university. The game elements were points, badges, leaderboard, avatars and challenges. Taking into account the curricular unit design, a global challenge was proposed, in the form of roleplaying, and took place along the whole semester. Three other challenges contributed to this global challenge: the students had to dynamize debates, and received points and badges, according to their performance. In terms of methodology, it consisted in an exploratory research of a qualitative character. Observation, complemented by a questionnaire made available to the students at the end of the semester, were the chosen techniques for data collection. It was observed that the adopted strategy motivated the students’ active participation, who really enjoyed the experience. However, some limitations were also observed, once these students, attending an online First Cycle Degree, are adults who have professional and family responsibilities and commitments. Actually, several of them mentioned that the difficulty in organizing their time did limit the possibility of participating in the challenge, which was indeed demanding in terms of active participation.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Rooted in Strengths: Celebrating the Strengths Perspective in Social Work

    For this volume, we wanted to mark the importance of the Strengths Perspective in social work practice. The Strengths Perspective emphasizes the human capacity for resilience and resourcefulness and recognizes the need for individuals and communities to form and achieve their own goals and aspirations. While acknowledging the difficulties that clients experience, the Strengths Perspective reframes obstacles as challenges, opportunities, and motivators for change, and places social workers as collaborators with clients, their families, and communities in the change process. The Strengths Perspective has become a guiding principle for academic and scholarly activity at the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare. Today the Strengths Perspective has become pervasive in social work, viewed as foundational to social work practice in the USA and several other countries. Practical applications, critical reviews, and innovative extensions of the perspective have emerged in social work education, policy development and analysis, organizational practice, and direct practice with clients. Strengths as a starting point are ubiquitous in our field. Current social work students and early career social workers would have little understanding of a deficit approach to working with people. The purpose of this special volume is to highlight the journey, catalog the paradigm shift, and document the historical roots of recognizing individuals’ strengths in their own ability to change. Our call to authors was intentionally abstract. Contributors were asked to share their application of the Strengths Perspective in practice, research/scholarship, or teaching, but given no parameters beyond that. It was our hope that we would hear the “story” of strengths work in social work from the unique perspective of the authors. What resulted is a wide-ranging collection of chapters that speaks to the power of strengths in the authors’ own words. From traditional research articles to personal narratives, the chapters illustrate how the Strengths Perspective has been applied in the United States and internationally.Rooted in Strengths: Celebrating the Strengths Perspective in Social Work builds upon the last three decades since the perspective was formally highlighted as a philosophy to guide social work practice by faculty and students at the University of Kansas in a 1989 article in the journal Social Work. Since then, the Strengths Perspective has grown to be a pervasive influence on the social work profession, while also influencing other movements that have challenged conventional thinking in social work, such as empowerment, social constructionism, feminism and holistic health and wellness. Today, the Strengths Perspective is used widely in the field of social work, being utilized in child and youth services, family practice, gerontology, mental health recovery, substance abuse treatment and other fields of practice in the United States and several other countries. With dozens of authors from around the world who currently serve as practitioners in the field, instructors and researchers, these chapters provide a look into the Strengths Perspective’s use today and its influence in social work and beyond
