    On the Enhancement of Remote GPU Virtualization in High Performance Clusters

    Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are being adopted in many computing facilities given their extraordinary computing power, which makes it possible to accelerate many general purpose applications from different domains. However, GPUs also present several side effects, such as increased acquisition costs as well as larger space requirements. They also require more powerful energy supplies. Furthermore, GPUs still consume some amount of energy while idle and their utilization is usually low for most workloads. In a similar way to virtual machines, the use of virtual GPUs may address the aforementioned concerns. In this regard, the remote GPU virtualization mechanism allows an application being executed in a node of the cluster to transparently use the GPUs installed at other nodes. Moreover, this technique allows to share the GPUs present in the computing facility among the applications being executed in the cluster. In this way, several applications being executed in different (or the same) cluster nodes can share one or more GPUs located in other nodes of the cluster. Sharing GPUs should increase overall GPU utilization, thus reducing the negative impact of the side effects mentioned before. Reducing the total amount of GPUs installed in the cluster may also be possible. In this dissertation we enhance one framework offering remote GPU virtualization capabilities, referred to as rCUDA, for its use in high-performance clusters. While the initial prototype version of rCUDA demonstrated its functionality, it also revealed concerns with respect to usability, performance, and support for new GPU features, which prevented its used in production environments. These issues motivated this thesis, in which all the research is primarily conducted with the aim of turning rCUDA into a production-ready solution for eventually transferring it to industry. The new version of rCUDA resulting from this work presents a reduction of up to 35% in execution time of the applications analyzed with respect to the initial version. Compared to the use of local GPUs, the overhead of this new version of rCUDA is below 5% for the applications studied when using the latest high-performance computing networks available.Las unidades de procesamiento gráfico (Graphics Processing Units, GPUs) están siendo utilizadas en muchas instalaciones de computación dada su extraordinaria capacidad de cálculo, la cual hace posible acelerar muchas aplicaciones de propósito general de diferentes dominios. Sin embargo, las GPUs también presentan algunas desventajas, como el aumento de los costos de adquisición, así como mayores requerimientos de espacio. Asimismo, también requieren un suministro de energía más potente. Además, las GPUs consumen una cierta cantidad de energía aún estando inactivas, y su utilización suele ser baja para la mayoría de las cargas de trabajo. De manera similar a las máquinas virtuales, el uso de GPUs virtuales podría hacer frente a los inconvenientes mencionados. En este sentido, el mecanismo de virtualización remota de GPUs permite que una aplicación que se ejecuta en un nodo de un clúster utilice de forma transparente las GPUs instaladas en otros nodos de dicho clúster. Además, esta técnica permite compartir las GPUs presentes en el clúster entre las aplicaciones que se ejecutan en el mismo. De esta manera, varias aplicaciones que se ejecutan en diferentes nodos de clúster (o los mismos) pueden compartir una o más GPUs ubicadas en otros nodos del clúster. Compartir GPUs aumenta la utilización general de la GPU, reduciendo así el impacto negativo de las desventajas anteriormente mencionadas. De igual forma, este mecanismo también permite reducir la cantidad total de GPUs instaladas en el clúster. En esta tesis mejoramos un entorno de trabajo llamado rCUDA, el cual ofrece funcionalidades de virtualización remota de GPUs para su uso en clusters de altas prestaciones. Si bien la versión inicial del prototipo de rCUDA demostró su funcionalidad, también reveló dificultades con respecto a la usabilidad, el rendimiento y el soporte para nuevas características de las GPUs, lo cual impedía su uso en entornos de producción. Estas consideraciones motivaron la presente tesis, en la que toda la investigación llevada a cabo tiene como objetivo principal convertir rCUDA en una solución lista para su uso entornos de producción, con la finalidad de transferirla eventualmente a la industria. La nueva versión de rCUDA resultante de este trabajo presenta una reducción de hasta el 35% en el tiempo de ejecución de las aplicaciones analizadas con respecto a la versión inicial. En comparación con el uso de GPUs locales, la sobrecarga de esta nueva versión de rCUDA es inferior al 5% para las aplicaciones estudiadas cuando se utilizan las últimas redes de computación de altas prestaciones disponibles.Les unitats de processament gràfic (Graphics Processing Units, GPUs) estan sent utilitzades en moltes instal·lacions de computació donada la seva extraordinària capacitat de càlcul, la qual fa possible accelerar moltes aplicacions de propòsit general de diferents dominis. No obstant això, les GPUs també presenten alguns desavantatges, com l'augment dels costos d'adquisició, així com major requeriment d'espai. Així mateix, també requereixen un subministrament d'energia més potent. A més, les GPUs consumeixen una certa quantitat d'energia encara estant inactives, i la seua utilització sol ser baixa per a la majoria de les càrregues de treball. D'una manera semblant a les màquines virtuals, l'ús de GPUs virtuals podria fer front als inconvenients esmentats. En aquest sentit, el mecanisme de virtualització remota de GPUs permet que una aplicació que s'executa en un node d'un clúster utilitze de forma transparent les GPUs instal·lades en altres nodes d'aquest clúster. A més, aquesta tècnica permet compartir les GPUs presents al clúster entre les aplicacions que s'executen en el mateix. D'aquesta manera, diverses aplicacions que s'executen en diferents nodes de clúster (o els mateixos) poden compartir una o més GPUs ubicades en altres nodes del clúster. Compartir GPUs augmenta la utilització general de la GPU, reduint així l'impacte negatiu dels desavantatges anteriorment esmentades. A més a més, aquest mecanisme també permet reduir la quantitat total de GPUs instal·lades al clúster. En aquesta tesi millorem un entorn de treball anomenat rCUDA, el qual ofereix funcionalitats de virtualització remota de GPUs per al seu ús en clústers d'altes prestacions. Si bé la versió inicial del prototip de rCUDA va demostrar la seua funcionalitat, també va revelar dificultats pel que fa a la usabilitat, el rendiment i el suport per a noves característiques de les GPUs, la qual cosa impedia el seu ús en entorns de producció. Aquestes consideracions van motivar la present tesi, en què tota la investigació duta a terme té com a objectiu principal convertir rCUDA en una solució preparada per al seu ús entorns de producció, amb la finalitat de transferir-la eventualment a la indústria. La nova versió de rCUDA resultant d'aquest treball presenta una reducció de fins al 35% en el temps d'execució de les aplicacions analitzades respecte a la versió inicial.     Engineering Topology of Construction Ecology for Dynamic Integration of Sustainability Outcomes to Functions in Urban Environments: Spatial Modeling

    Integration sustainability outcomes give attention to construction ecology in the design review of urban environments to comply with Earth’s System that is composed of integral parts of the (i.e., physical, chemical and biological components). Naturally, exchange patterns of industrial ecology have consistent and periodic cycles to preserve energy flows and materials in Earth’s System. When engineering topology is affecting internal and external processes in system networks, it postulated the valence of the first-level spatial outcome (i.e., project compatibility success). These instrumentalities are dependent on relating the second-level outcome (i.e., participant security satisfaction). The construction ecology-based topology (i.e., as feedback energy system) flows from biotic and abiotic resources in the entire Earth’s ecosystems. These spatial outcomes are providing an innovation, as entails a wide range of interactions to state, regulate and feedback “topology” to flow as “interdisciplinary equilibrium” of ecosystems. The interrelation dynamics of ecosystems are performing a process in a certain location within an appropriate time for characterizing their unique structure in “equilibrium patterns”, such as biosphere and collecting a composite structure of many distributed feedback flows. These interdisciplinary systems regulate their dynamics within complex structures. These dynamic mechanisms of the ecosystem regulate physical and chemical properties to enable a gradual and prolonged incremental pattern to develop a stable structure. The engineering topology of construction ecology for integration sustainability outcomes offers an interesting tool for ecologists and engineers in the simulation paradigm as an initial form of development structure within compatible computer software. This approach argues from ecology, resource savings, static load design, financial other pragmatic reasons, while an artistic/architectural perspective, these are not decisive. The paper described an attempt to unify analytic and analogical spatial modeling in developing urban environments as a relational setting, using optimization software and applied as an example of integrated industrial ecology where the construction process is based on a topology optimization approach

    Cloud Services Brokerage for Mobile Ubiquitous Computing

    Recently, companies are adopting Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) to efficiently deliver enterprise services to users (or consumers) on their personalized devices. MCC is the facilitation of mobile devices (e.g., smartphones, tablets, notebooks, and smart watches) to access virtualized services such as software applications, servers, storage, and network services over the Internet. With the advancement and diversity of the mobile landscape, there has been a growing trend in consumer attitude where a single user owns multiple mobile devices. This paradigm of supporting a single user or consumer to access multiple services from n-devices is referred to as the Ubiquitous Cloud Computing (UCC) or the Personal Cloud Computing. In the UCC era, consumers expect to have application and data consistency across their multiple devices and in real time. However, this expectation can be hindered by the intermittent loss of connectivity in wireless networks, user mobility, and peak load demands. Hence, this dissertation presents an architectural framework called, Cloud Services Brokerage for Mobile Ubiquitous Cloud Computing (CSB-UCC), which ensures soft real-time and reliable services consumption on multiple devices of users. The CSB-UCC acts as an application middleware broker that connects the n-devices of users to the multi-cloud services. The designed system determines the multi-cloud services based on the user's subscriptions and the n-devices are determined through device registration on the broker. The preliminary evaluations of the designed system shows that the following are achieved: 1) high scalability through the adoption of a distributed architecture of the brokerage service, 2) providing soft real-time application synchronization for consistent user experience through an enhanced mobile-to-cloud proximity-based access technique, 3) reliable error recovery from system failure through transactional services re-assignment to active nodes, and 4) transparent audit trail through access-level and context-centric provenance

    A Nation of Gamers: The History of Video Games in Canada

    This thesis is a study of the economic, cultural, and political impact of video games in Canada. The trajectory of video games will be mapped beginning with the arrival of video games in Canadian markets in the mid-1970s and ending in the 2000s, with the debut of the Globe and Mail’s gaming section and the finalization of Ubisoft’s $263 million deal with the Ontario Government. Through this journey, it will be shown that over this roughly thirty-year period, video games have become interwoven into the everyday life of Canadians. Today in Canada, many regard video games as important cultural objects and a growing economic sector, yet this was not always the case. The industry has managed to thrive thanks to government influences and arrivals of anchor studios at key times. Yet in the media and the government, video games were seen as a nuisance and threat to children for much of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, and faced many opponents that urged them be banned or censored. Despite these scares, video games were able to grow and be consumed in Canada without the implementation of government restrictions. This history of video games in Canada argues that these factors were caused by a generation gap and larger moral panic, which dissipated after it grew into such a large enough industry and market, that it became lucrative to Canada as a whole.     From MANET to people-centric networking: Milestones and open research challenges

    In this paper, we discuss the state of the art of (mobile) multi-hop ad hoc networking with the aim to present the current status of the research activities and identify the consolidated research areas, with limited research opportunities, and the hot and emerging research areas for which further research is required. We start by briefly discussing the MANET paradigm, and why the research on MANET protocols is now a cold research topic. Then we analyze the active research areas. Specifically, after discussing the wireless-network technologies, we analyze four successful ad hoc networking paradigms, mesh networks, opportunistic networks, vehicular networks, and sensor networks that emerged from the MANET world. We also present an emerging research direction in the multi-hop ad hoc networking field: people centric networking, triggered by the increasing penetration of the smartphones in everyday life, which is generating a people-centric revolution in computing and communications

    Improving Access and Mental Health for Youth Through Virtual Models of Care

    The overall objective of this research is to evaluate the use of a mobile health smartphone application (app) to improve the mental health of youth between the ages of 14–25 years, with symptoms of anxiety/depression. This project includes 115 youth who are accessing outpatient mental health services at one of three hospitals and two community agencies. The youth and care providers are using eHealth technology to enhance care. The technology uses mobile questionnaires to help promote self-assessment and track changes to support the plan of care. The technology also allows secure virtual treatment visits that youth can participate in through mobile devices. This longitudinal study uses participatory action research with mixed methods. The majority of participants identified themselves as Caucasian (66.9%). Expectedly, the demographics revealed that Anxiety Disorders and Mood Disorders were highly prevalent within the sample (71.9% and 67.5% respectively). Findings from the qualitative summary established that both staff and youth found the software and platform beneficial

    Enabling Model-Driven Live Analytics For Cyber-Physical Systems: The Case of Smart Grids

    Advances in software, embedded computing, sensors, and networking technologies will lead to a new generation of smart cyber-physical systems that will far exceed the capabilities of today’s embedded systems. They will be entrusted with increasingly complex tasks like controlling electric grids or autonomously driving cars. These systems have the potential to lay the foundations for tomorrow’s critical infrastructures, to form the basis of emerging and future smart services, and to improve the quality of our everyday lives in many areas. In order to solve their tasks, they have to continuously monitor and collect data from physical processes, analyse this data, and make decisions based on it. Making smart decisions requires a deep understanding of the environment, internal state, and the impacts of actions. Such deep understanding relies on efficient data models to organise the sensed data and on advanced analytics. Considering that cyber-physical systems are controlling physical processes, decisions need to be taken very fast. This makes it necessary to analyse data in live, as opposed to conventional batch analytics. However, the complex nature combined with the massive amount of data generated by such systems impose fundamental challenges. While data in the context of cyber-physical systems has some similar characteristics as big data, it holds a particular complexity. This complexity results from the complicated physical phenomena described by this data, which makes it difficult to extract a model able to explain such data and its various multi-layered relationships. Existing solutions fail to provide sustainable mechanisms to analyse such data in live. This dissertation presents a novel approach, named model-driven live analytics. The main contribution of this thesis is a multi-dimensional graph data model that brings raw data, domain knowledge, and machine learning together in a single model, which can drive live analytic processes. This model is continuously updated with the sensed data and can be leveraged by live analytic processes to support decision-making of cyber-physical systems. The presented approach has been developed in collaboration with an industrial partner and, in form of a prototype, applied to the domain of smart grids. The addressed challenges are derived from this collaboration as a response to shortcomings in the current state of the art. More specifically, this dissertation provides solutions for the following challenges: First, data handled by cyber-physical systems is usually dynamic—data in motion as opposed to traditional data at rest—and changes frequently and at different paces. Analysing such data is challenging since data models usually can only represent a snapshot of a system at one specific point in time. A common approach consists in a discretisation, which regularly samples and stores such snapshots at specific timestamps to keep track of the history. Continuously changing data is then represented as a finite sequence of such snapshots. Such data representations would be very inefficient to analyse, since it would require to mine the snapshots, extract a relevant dataset, and finally analyse it. For this problem, this thesis presents a temporal graph data model and storage system, which consider time as a first-class property. A time-relative navigation concept enables to analyse frequently changing data very efficiently. Secondly, making sustainable decisions requires to anticipate what impacts certain actions would have. Considering complex cyber-physical systems, it can come to situations where hundreds or thousands of such hypothetical actions must be explored before a solid decision can be made. Every action leads to an independent alternative from where a set of other actions can be applied and so forth. Finding the sequence of actions that leads to the desired alternative, requires to efficiently create, represent, and analyse many different alternatives. Given that every alternative has its own history, this creates a very high combinatorial complexity of alternatives and histories, which is hard to analyse. To tackle this problem, this dissertation introduces a multi-dimensional graph data model (as an extension of the temporal graph data model) that enables to efficiently represent, store, and analyse many different alternatives in live. Thirdly, complex cyber-physical systems are often distributed, but to fulfil their tasks these systems typically need to share context information between computational entities. This requires analytic algorithms to reason over distributed data, which is a complex task since it relies on the aggregation and processing of various distributed and constantly changing data. To address this challenge, this dissertation proposes an approach to transparently distribute the presented multi-dimensional graph data model in a peer-to-peer manner and defines a stream processing concept to efficiently handle frequent changes. Fourthly, to meet future needs, cyber-physical systems need to become increasingly intelligent. To make smart decisions, these systems have to continuously refine behavioural models that are known at design time, with what can only be learned from live data. Machine learning algorithms can help to solve this unknown behaviour by extracting commonalities over massive datasets. Nevertheless, searching a coarse-grained common behaviour model can be very inaccurate for cyber-physical systems, which are composed of completely different entities with very different behaviour. For these systems, fine-grained learning can be significantly more accurate. However, modelling, structuring, and synchronising many fine-grained learning units is challenging. To tackle this, this thesis presents an approach to define reusable, chainable, and independently computable fine-grained learning units, which can be modelled together with and on the same level as domain data. This allows to weave machine learning directly into the presented multi-dimensional graph data model. In summary, this thesis provides an efficient multi-dimensional graph data model to enable live analytics of complex, frequently changing, and distributed data of cyber-physical systems. This model can significantly improve data analytics for such systems and empower cyber-physical systems to make smart decisions in live.
