    Domain Adaptation for Novel Imaging Modalities with Application to Prostate MRI

    The need for training data can impede the adoption of novel imaging modalities for deep learning-based medical image analysis. Domain adaptation can mitigate this problem by exploiting training samples from an existing, densely-annotated source domain within a novel, sparsely-annotated target domain, by bridging the differences between the two domains. In this thesis we present methods for adapting between diffusion-weighed (DW)-MRI data from multiparametric (mp)-MRI acquisitions and VERDICT (Vascular, Extracellular and Restricted Diffusion for Cytometry in Tumors) MRI, a richer DW-MRI technique involving an optimized acquisition protocol for cancer characterization. We also show that the proposed methods are general and their applicability extends beyond medical imaging. First, we propose a semi-supervised domain adaptation method for prostate lesion segmentation on VERDICT MRI. Our approach relies on stochastic generative modelling to translate across two heterogeneous domains at pixel-space and exploits the inherent uncertainty in the cross-domain mapping to generate multiple outputs conditioned on a single input. We further extend this approach to the unsupervised scenario where there is no labeled data for the target domain. We rely on stochastic generative modelling to translate across the two domains at pixel space and introduce two loss functions that promote semantic consistency. Finally we demonstrate that the proposed approaches extend beyond medical image analysis and focus on unsupervised domain adaptation for semantic segmentation of urban scenes. We show that relying on stochastic generative modelling allows us to train more accurate target networks and achieve state-of-the-art performance on two challenging semantic segmentation benchmarks

    Face recognition is an important pattern recognition problem, in the study of both natural and artificial learning problems. Compaxed to other biometrics, it is non-intrusive, non- invasive and requires no paxticipation from the subjects. As a result, it has many applications varying from human-computer-interaction to access control and law-enforcement to crowd surveillance. In typical optical image based face recognition systems, the systematic vaxiability arising from representing the three-dimensional (3D) shape of a face by a two-dimensional (21)) illumination intensity matrix is treated as random vaxiability. Multiple examples of the face displaying vaxying pose and expressions axe captured in different imaging conditions. The imaging environment, pose and expressions are strictly controlled and the images undergo rigorous normalisation and pre-processing. This may be implemented in a paxtially or a fully automated system. Although these systems report high classification accuracies (>90%), they lack versatility and tend to fail when deployed outside laboratory conditions. Recently, more sophisticated 3D face recognition systems haxnessing the depth information have emerged. These systems usually employ specialist equipment such as laser scanners and structured light projectors. Although more accurate than 2D optical image based recognition, these systems are equally difficult to implement in a non-co-operative environment. Existing face recognition systems, both 2D and 3D, detract from the main advantages of face recognition and fail to fully exploit its non-intrusive capacity. This is either because they rely too much on subject co-operation, which is not always available, or because they cannot cope with noisy data. The main objective of this work was to investigate the role of depth information in face recognition in a noisy environment. A stereo-based system, inspired by the human binocular vision, was devised using a pair of manually calibrated digital off-the-shelf cameras in a stereo setup to compute depth information. Depth values extracted from 2D intensity images using stereoscopy are extremely noisy, and as a result this approach for face recognition is rare. This was cofirmed by the results of our experimental work. Noise in the set of correspondences, camera calibration and triangulation led to inaccurate depth reconstruction, which in turn led to poor classifier accuracy for both 3D surface matching and 211) 2 depth maps.     Privacy Intelligence: A Survey on Image Sharing on Online Social Networks

    Image sharing on online social networks (OSNs) has become an indispensable part of daily social activities, but it has also led to an increased risk of privacy invasion. The recent image leaks from popular OSN services and the abuse of personal photos using advanced algorithms (e.g. DeepFake) have prompted the public to rethink individual privacy needs when sharing images on OSNs. However, OSN image sharing itself is relatively complicated, and systems currently in place to manage privacy in practice are labor-intensive yet fail to provide personalized, accurate and flexible privacy protection. As a result, an more intelligent environment for privacy-friendly OSN image sharing is in demand. To fill the gap, we contribute a systematic survey of 'privacy intelligence' solutions that target modern privacy issues related to OSN image sharing. Specifically, we present a high-level analysis framework based on the entire lifecycle of OSN image sharing to address the various privacy issues and solutions facing this interdisciplinary field. The framework is divided into three main stages: local management, online management and social experience. At each stage, we identify typical sharing-related user behaviors, the privacy issues generated by those behaviors, and review representative intelligent solutions. The resulting analysis describes an intelligent privacy-enhancing chain for closed-loop privacy management.     A Multiple-Systems Approach in the Symbolic Modelling of Human Vision

    For most of the thirty years or so of machine vision research, activity has been concentrated mainly in the domain of metric-based approaches: there has been negligible attention to the psychological factors in human vision. With the recent resurgence of interest in neural systems, that is now changing. This thesis discusses relevant aspects of basic visual neuroanatomy, and psychological phenomena, in an attempt to relate the concepts to a model of human vision and the prospective goals of future machine vision systems. It is suggested that, while biological vision is complex, the underlying mechanisms of human vision are more tractable than is often believed. We also argue here that the controversial subject of direct vision plays a crucial role in natural vision, and we attempt to relate this to the model. The recognition of massive parallelism in natural vision has led to proposals for emulating aspects of neural networks in technology. The systems model developed in this work demonstrates software-simulated cellular automata (CAs) in the role of mainly low-level image processing. It is shown that CAs are able to efficiently provide both conventional and neurally-inspired vision functions. The thesis also discusses the use of Prolog as the means of realising higher level image understanding. The symbolic processing developed is basic, but is nevertheless sufficient for the purposes of the present. demonstrations. Extensions to the concepts can be easily achieved. The modular systems approach adopted blends together several ideas and processes, and results in a more robust model of human vision that is able to translate a noisy real image into an accessible symbolic form for expert-domain interpretation
