    Making the Case for Evidence-based Standardization of Data Privacy and Data Protection Visual Indicators

    Lately, icons have witnessed a growing wave of interest in the view of enhancing transparency and clarity of data processing practices in mandated disclosures. Although benefits in terms of comprehensibility, noticeability, navigability of the information and user’s attention and memorization can be expected, they should also be supported by decisive empirical evidence about the efficacy of the icons in specific contexts. Misrepresentation, oversimplification, and improper salience of certain aspects over others are omnipresent risks that can drive data subjects to wrong conclusions. Cross-domain and international standardization of visual means also poses a serious challenge: if on the one hand developing standards is necessary to ensure widespread recognition and comprehension, each domain and application presents unique features that can be hardly established, and imposed, in a top-down manner. This article critically discusses the above issues and identifies relevant open questions for scientific research. It also provides concrete examples and practical suggestions for researchers and practitioners that aim to implement transparency-enhancing icons in the spirit of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

    Collateral damage of Facebook third-party applications: a comprehensive study

    Third-party applications on Facebook can collect personal data of the users who install them, but also of their friends. This raises serious privacy issues as these friends are not notified by the applications nor by Facebook and they have not given consent. This paper presents a detailed multi-faceted study on the collateral information collection of the applications on Facebook. To investigate the views of the users, we designed a questionnaire and collected the responses of 114 participants. The results show that participants are concerned about the collateral information collection and in particular about the lack of notification and of mechanisms to control the data collection. Based on real data, we compute the likelihood of collateral information collection affecting users: we show that the probability is significant and greater than 80% for popular applications such as TripAdvisor. We also demonstrate that a substantial amount of profile data can be collected by applications, which enables application providers to profile users. To investigate whether collateral information collection is an issue to users’ privacy we analysed the legal framework in light of the General Data Protection Regulation. We provide a detailed analysis of the entities involved and investigate which entity is accountable for the collateral information collection. To provide countermeasures, we propose a privacy dashboard extension that implements privacy scoring computations to enhance transparency toward collateral information collection. Furthermore, we discuss alternative solutions highlighting other countermeasures such as notification and access control mechanisms, cryptographic solutions and application auditing. To the best of our knowledge this is the first work that provides a detailed multi-faceted study of this problem and that analyses the threat of user profiling by application providers

    Analysis and Design of Privacy-Enhancing Information Sharing Systems

    Recent technological advancements have enabled the collection of large amounts of personal data of individuals at an ever-increasing rate. Service providers, organisations and governments can collect or otherwise acquire rich information about individuals’ everyday lives and habits from big data-silos, enabling profiling and micro-targeting such as in political elections. Therefore, it is important to analyse systems that allow the collection and information sharing between users and to design secure and privacy enhancing solutions. This thesis contains two parts. The aim of the first part is to investigate in detail the effects of the collateral information collection of third-party applications on Facebook. The aim of the second part is to analyse in detail the security and privacy issues of car sharing systems and to design a secure and privacy-preserving solution. In the first part, we present a detailed multi-faceted study on the collateral information collection privacy issues of Facebook applications; providers of third-party applications on Facebook exploit the interdependency between users and their friends. The goal is to (i) study the existence of the problem, (ii) investigate whether Facebook users are concerned about the issue, quantify its (iii) likelihood and (iv) impact of collateral information collection affecting users, (v) identify whether collateral information collection is an issue for the protection of the personal data of Facebook users under the legal framework, and (vi) we propose solutions that aim to solve the problem of collateral information collection. In order to investigate the views of the users, we designed a questionnaire and collected the responses of participants. Employing real data from the Facebook third-party applications ecosystem, we compute the likelihood of collateral information collection affecting users and quantify its significance evaluating the amount of attributes collected by such applications.     Threats to Autonomy from Emerging ICT’s

    This thesis investigates possible future threats to human autonomy created by currently emerging ICT’s. Prepared for evaluation as PhD by Publication, it consists of four journal papers and one book chapter, together with explanatory material. The ICT’s under examination are drawn from the results of the ETICA project, which sought to identify emerging ICT’s of ethical import. We first evaluate this research and identify elements in need of enhancement – the social aspects pertaining to ethical impact and the need to introduce elements of General Systems Theory in order to account for ICT’s as socio-technical systems. The first two publications for evaluation present arguments from marxist and capitalist perspectives which provide an account of the social dimensions through which an ICT can reduce human autonomy. There are many competing accounts of what constitutes human autonomy. These may be grouped into classes by their primary characteristics. The third publication for evaluation cross-references these classes with the ICT’s identified by the ETICA project, showing which version of autonomy could be restricted by each ICT and how. Finally, this paper induces from this analysis some general characteristics which any ICT must exhibit if it is to restrict autonomy of any form. Since ICT’s all operate in the same environment, the ultimate effect on the individual is the aggregated effect of all those ICT’s with which they interact and can be treated as an open system. Our fourth paper for evaluation therefore develops a theory of ICT’s as systems of a socio-technical nature, titled “Integrated Domain Theory”. Our fifth publication uses Integrated Domain Theory to explore the manner in which sociotechnical systems can restrict human autonomy, no matter how conceived. This thesis thus offers two complementary answers to the primary research question

    Supporting users in password authentication with persuasive design

    Activities like text-editing, watching movies, or managing personal finances are all accomplished with web-based solutions nowadays. The providers need to ensure security and privacy of user data. To that end, passwords are still the most common authentication method on the web. They are inexpensive and easy to implement. Users are largely accustomed to this kind of authentication but passwords represent a considerable nuisance, because they are tedious to create, remember, and maintain. In many cases, usability issues turn into security problems, because users try to work around the challenges and create easily predictable credentials. Often, they reuse their passwords for many purposes, which aggravates the risk of identity theft. There have been numerous attempts to remove the root of the problem and replace passwords, e.g., through biometrics. However, no other authentication strategy can fully replace them, so passwords will probably stay a go-to authentication method for the foreseeable future. Researchers and practitioners have thus aimed to improve users' situation in various ways. There are two main lines of research on helping users create both usable and secure passwords. On the one hand, password policies have a notable impact on password practices, because they enforce certain characteristics. However, enforcement reduces users' autonomy and often causes frustration if the requirements are poorly communicated or overly complex. On the other hand, user-centered designs have been proposed: Assistance and persuasion are typically more user-friendly but their influence is often limited. In this thesis, we explore potential reasons for the inefficacy of certain persuasion strategies. From the gained knowledge, we derive novel persuasive design elements to support users in password authentication. The exploration of contextual factors in password practices is based on four projects that reveal both psychological aspects and real-world constraints. Here, we investigate how mental models of password strength and password managers can provide important pointers towards the design of persuasive interventions. Moreover, the associations between personality traits and password practices are evaluated in three user studies. A meticulous audit of real-world password policies shows the constraints for selection and reuse practices. Based on the review of context factors, we then extend the design space of persuasive password support with three projects. We first depict the explicit and implicit user needs in password support. Second, we craft and evaluate a choice architecture that illustrates how a phenomenon from marketing psychology can provide new insights into the design of nudging strategies. Third, we tried to empower users to create memorable passwords with emojis. The results show the challenges and potentials of emoji-passwords on different platforms. Finally, the thesis presents a framework for the persuasive design of password support. It aims to structure the required activities during the entire process. This enables researchers and practitioners to craft novel systems that go beyond traditional paradigms, which is illustrated by a design exercise.Heutzutage ist es möglich, mit web-basierten Lösungen Texte zu editieren, Filme anzusehen, oder seine persönlichen Finanzen zu verwalten. Die Anbieter müssen hierbei Sicherheit und Vertraulichkeit von Nutzerdaten sicherstellen. Dazu sind Passwörter weiterhin die geläufigste Authentifizierungsmethode im Internet. Sie sind kostengünstig und einfach zu implementieren. NutzerInnen sind bereits im Umgang mit diesem Verfahren vertraut jedoch stellen Passwörter ein beträchtliches Ärgernis dar, weil sie mühsam zu erstellen, einzuprägen, und verwalten sind. Oft werden Usabilityfragen zu Sicherheitsproblemen, weil NutzerInnen Herausforderungen umschiffen und sich einfach zu erratende Zugangsdaten ausdenken. Daneben verwenden sie Passwörter für viele Zwecke wieder, was das Risiko eines Identitätsdiebstals weiter erhöht. Es gibt zahlreiche Versuche die Wurzel des Problems zu beseitigen und Passwörter zu ersetzen, z.B. mit Biometrie. Jedoch kann bisher kein anderes Verfahren sie vollkommen ersetzen, so dass Passwörter wohl für absehbare Zeit die Hauptauthentifizierungsmethode bleiben werden. ExpertInnen aus Forschung und Industrie haben sich deshalb zum Ziel gefasst, die Situation der NutzerInnen auf verschiedene Wege zu verbessern. Es existieren zwei Forschungsstränge darüber wie man NutzerInnen bei der Erstellung von sicheren und benutzbaren Passwörtern helfen kann. Auf der einen Seite haben Regeln bei der Passworterstellung deutliche Auswirkungen auf Passwortpraktiken, weil sie bestimmte Charakteristiken durchsetzen. Jedoch reduziert diese Durchsetzung die Autonomie der NutzerInnen und verursacht Frustration, wenn die Anforderungen schlecht kommuniziert oder übermäßig komplex sind. Auf der anderen Seite stehen nutzerzentrierte Designs: Hilfestellung und Überzeugungsarbeit sind typischerweise nutzerfreundlicher wobei ihr Einfluss begrenzt ist. In dieser Arbeit erkunden wir die potenziellen Gründe für die Ineffektivität bestimmter Überzeugungsstrategien. Von dem hierbei gewonnenen Wissen leiten wir neue persuasive Designelemente für Hilfestellung bei der Passwortauthentifizierung ab. Die Exploration von Kontextfaktoren im Umgang mit Passwörtern basiert auf vier Projekten, die sowohl psychologische Aspekte als auch Einschränkungen in der Praxis aufdecken. Hierbei untersuchen wir inwiefern Mental Modelle von Passwortstärke und -managern wichtige Hinweise auf das Design von persuasiven Interventionen liefern. Darüber hinaus werden die Zusammenhänge zwischen Persönlichkeitsmerkmalen und Passwortpraktiken in drei Nutzerstudien untersucht. Eine gründliche Überprüfung von Passwortregeln in der Praxis zeigt die Einschränkungen für Passwortselektion und -wiederverwendung. Basierend auf der Durchleuchtung der Kontextfaktoren erweitern wir hierauf den Design-Raum von persuasiver Passworthilfestellung mit drei Projekten. Zuerst schildern wir die expliziten und impliziten Bedürfnisse in punkto Hilfestellung. Daraufhin erstellen und evaluieren wir eine Entscheidungsarchitektur, welche veranschaulicht wie ein Phänomen aus der Marketingpsychologie neue Einsichten in das Design von Nudging-Strategien liefern kann. Im Schlussgang versuchen wir NutzerInnen dabei zu stärken, gut merkbare Passwörter mit Hilfe von Emojis zu erstellen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen die Herausforderungen und Potenziale von Emoji-Passwörtern auf verschiedenen Plattformen. Zuletzt präsentiert diese Arbeit ein Rahmenkonzept für das persuasive Design von Passworthilfestellungen. Es soll die benötigten Aktivitäten während des gesamten Prozesses strukturieren. Dies erlaubt ExpertInnen neuartige Systeme zu entwickeln, die über traditionelle Ansätze hinausgehen, was durch eine Designstudie veranschaulicht wird
