    Augmented Interaction Systems for Supporting Autistic Children. Evolution of a Multichannel Expressive Tool: The SEMI Project Feasibility Study

    International audienceBackground: Over the past ten years, the authors have been designing, developing, and testing pervasive technology to support children with autism (ASD). Methods: In the present study, an integrated system based on multimedia and augmented interaction technologies have been tested on young subjects with ASD and dyspraxia in the age range of 6-10 years, in charge for rehabilitation treatments; a team of clinical psychologists has analyzed the results of the experimentation. The ten children involved in the project underwent an initial assessment of praxis skills and motor coordination. Subsequently, the subjects were subdivided into two subgroups: five children participated in the experimentation and five were evaluated as the control group (treatment as usual). Results: The evaluation showed an increased score in the several aspects considered, and particularly those related to motor coordination. An improvement in balancing tests and in hands-movement testing was found. Conclusion: The children involved in the sessions showed greater ability to self-control the movement as well as to select specific motor areas. The methods used seem to be promising to improve emotional and social skills too in a motivating and enjoyable climate. A high level of acceptance by professionals was observed and parents' feedback was also positive

    Augmented reality system with application in physical rehabilitation

    The aging phenomenon causes increased physiotherapy services requirements, with increased costs associated with long rehabilitation periods. Traditional rehabilitation methods rely on the subjective assessment of physiotherapists without supported training data. To overcome the shortcoming of traditional rehabilitation method and improve the efficiency of rehabilitation, AR (Augmented Reality) which represents a promissory technology that provides an immersive interaction with real and virtual objects is used. The AR devices may assure the capture body posture and scan the real environment that conducted to a growing number of AR applications focused on physical rehabilitation. In this MSc thesis, an AR platform used to materialize a physical rehabilitation plan for stroke patients is presented. Gait training is a significant part of physical rehabilitation for stroke patients. AR represents a promissory solution for training assessment providing information to the patients and physiotherapists about exercises to be done and the reached results. As part of MSc work an iOS application was developed in unity 3D platform. This application immersing patients in a mixed environment that combine real-world and virtual objects. The human computer interface is materialized by an iPhone as head-mounted 3D display and a set of wireless sensors for physiological and motion parameters measurement. The position and velocity of the patient are recorded by a smart carpet that includes capacitive sensors connected to a computation unit characterized by Wi-Fi communication capabilities. AR training scenario and the corresponding experimental results are part of the thesis.O envelhecimento causa um aumento das necessidades dos serviços de fisioterapia, com aumento dos custos associados a longos períodos de reabilitação. Os métodos tradicionais de reabilitação dependem da avaliação subjetiva de fisioterapeutas sem registo automatizado de dados de treino. Com o principal objetivo de superar os problemas do método tradicional e melhorar a eficiência da reabilitação, é utilizada a RA (Realidade Aumentada), que representa uma tecnologia promissora, que fornece uma interação imersiva com objetos reais e virtuais. Os dispositivos de RA são capazes de garantir uma postura correta do corpo de capturar e verificar o ambiente real, o que levou a um número crescente de aplicações de RA focados na reabilitação física. Neste projeto, é apresentada uma plataforma de RA, utilizada para materializar um plano de reabilitação física para pacientes que sofreram AVC. O treino de marcha é uma parte significativa da reabilitação física para pacientes com AVC. A RA apresenta-se como uma solução promissora para a avaliação do treino, fornecendo informações aos pacientes e aos profissionais de fisioterapia sobre os exercícios a serem realizados e os resultados alcançados. Como parte deste projeto, uma aplicação iOS foi desenvolvida na plataforma Unity 3D. Esta aplicação fornece aos pacientes um ambiente imersivo que combina objetos reais e virtuais. A interface de RA é materializada por um iPhone montado num suporte de cabeça do utilizador, assim como um conjunto de sensores sem fios para medição de parâmetros fisiológicos e de movimento. A posição e a velocidade do paciente são registadas por um tapete inteligente que inclui sensores capacitivos conectados a uma unidade de computação, caracterizada por comunicação via Wi-Fi.     Digital support for self-management and meaningful activities of people with mild dementia:Development, implementation and feasibility of a person-centred touch-screen intervention

    This thesis reports on the research that was conducted to develop and pilot test a person-centred touchscreen-based program (FindMyApps intervention) that supports people with mild dementia and their informal carers in how to use a tablet and apps for self-management and meaningful activities. The program consists of the FindMyApps training for informal carers in supporting people with mild dementia in using a tablet and the FindMyApps selection tool designed to help people with mild dementia find apps for self-management and meaningful activities that fit their needs, wishes and abilities. The program was developed following the Medical Research Council (MRC) Framework for the design and evaluation of complex interventions and in co-creation with end users. The chapters of this thesis describe the first three phases of this framework i.e.: the preclinical or theoretical phase (0); the modelling phase (I) and the exploratory trial (II). The execution of an RCT (III), and further implementation (IV) in case the intervention proves effective, are beyond the scope of this thesis. In the first phase user needs studies were performed to identify user requirements for desired self-management and meaningful activities and to identify user-requirements related to the use of apps. Eight focus groups were performed in which people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or mild dementia (n=13) and informal carers (n=15) participated. We also conducted a literature review to explore which training interventions are most effective for people with mild dementia in (re)learning how to use technologies, including handheld touchscreen devices. An electronic search was conducted in the following databases: PubMed, APA PsycInfo (EBSCO) and CINAHL (EBSCO). In total 16 studies met the inclusion criteria. Our review contributed to the growing amount of promising evidence on the potential impact of Errorless learning training interventions for people with mild to moderate dementia in (re)learning how to use technology. Based on these results we developed the FindMyApps training. In the second phase of the framework we developed a first concept of the FindMyApps selection tool based on identified user requirements. To ensure its usability, the web-based tool was developed using a ‘user-participatory design’ involving the close collaboration of potential users, a development team (researchers, developers and designers) and an expert team (experts in person-centred dementia care and ICT). In three short iterative rounds – so called ‘sprints’ – the users (people with dementia (n=8) and (in)formal carers (n=10)) were invited to test whether the prototypes were in line with their needs, wishes and abilities. This generated important insights into user-interface aspects relating to (i) useful content and (ii) a user-friendly tool design. In the third phase we pilot tested the FindMyApps intervention by means of individual semi-structured interviews and a pilot randomized controlled exploratory trial. Twenty people with mild dementia and informal carer dyads were randomly assigned to the FindMyApps group (n=10), receiving either the FindMyApps training and selection tool, or a control condition (n=10), receiving only a short tablet training. Pre- and post-test measurements at a three month follow-up, consisted of questionnaires and post-test semi-structured interviews. Based on the qualitative results and the effect sizes on the outcomes measured in this study, we consider that the FindMyApps intervention has the potential to positively influence the self-management and engagement in meaningful activities in people with dementia. Future studies with a larger sample should better indicate whether this expectation can be confirmed. The intervention will be further improved and tested in a larger pilot-RCT study and its effectiveness subsequently evaluated in a definite RCT

    Políticas de Copyright de Publicações Científicas em Repositórios Institucionais: O Caso do INESC TEC

    A progressiva transformação das práticas científicas, impulsionada pelo desenvolvimento das novas Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC), têm possibilitado aumentar o acesso à informação, caminhando gradualmente para uma abertura do ciclo de pesquisa. Isto permitirá resolver a longo prazo uma adversidade que se tem colocado aos investigadores, que passa pela existência de barreiras que limitam as condições de acesso, sejam estas geográficas ou financeiras. Apesar da produção científica ser dominada, maioritariamente, por grandes editoras comerciais, estando sujeita às regras por estas impostas, o Movimento do Acesso Aberto cuja primeira declaração pública, a Declaração de Budapeste (BOAI), é de 2002, vem propor alterações significativas que beneficiam os autores e os leitores. Este Movimento vem a ganhar importância em Portugal desde 2003, com a constituição do primeiro repositório institucional a nível nacional. Os repositórios institucionais surgiram como uma ferramenta de divulgação da produção científica de uma instituição, com o intuito de permitir abrir aos resultados da investigação, quer antes da publicação e do próprio processo de arbitragem (preprint), quer depois (postprint), e, consequentemente, aumentar a visibilidade do trabalho desenvolvido por um investigador e a respetiva instituição. O estudo apresentado, que passou por uma análise das políticas de copyright das publicações científicas mais relevantes do INESC TEC, permitiu não só perceber que as editoras adotam cada vez mais políticas que possibilitam o auto-arquivo das publicações em repositórios institucionais, como também que existe todo um trabalho de sensibilização a percorrer, não só para os investigadores, como para a instituição e toda a sociedade. A produção de um conjunto de recomendações, que passam pela implementação de uma política institucional que incentive o auto-arquivo das publicações desenvolvidas no âmbito institucional no repositório, serve como mote para uma maior valorização da produção científica do INESC TEC.The progressive transformation of scientific practices, driven by the development of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which made it possible to increase access to information, gradually moving towards an opening of the research cycle. This opening makes it possible to resolve, in the long term, the adversity that has been placed on researchers, which involves the existence of barriers that limit access conditions, whether geographical or financial. Although large commercial publishers predominantly dominate scientific production and subject it to the rules imposed by them, the Open Access movement whose first public declaration, the Budapest Declaration (BOAI), was in 2002, proposes significant changes that benefit the authors and the readers. This Movement has gained importance in Portugal since 2003, with the constitution of the first institutional repository at the national level. Institutional repositories have emerged as a tool for disseminating the scientific production of an institution to open the results of the research, both before publication and the preprint process and postprint, increase the visibility of work done by an investigator and his or her institution. The present study, which underwent an analysis of the copyright policies of INESC TEC most relevant scientific publications, allowed not only to realize that publishers are increasingly adopting policies that make it possible to self-archive publications in institutional repositories, all the work of raising awareness, not only for researchers but also for the institution and the whole society. The production of a set of recommendations, which go through the implementation of an institutional policy that encourages the self-archiving of the publications developed in the institutional scope in the repository, serves as a motto for a greater appreciation of the scientific production of INESC TEC
