This was the first PPIG to be held physically since 2019, following the two online-only PPIGs in 2020 and 2021, both during the Covid pandemic. How to Make Agents and Influence Teammates: Understanding the Social Influence AI Teammates Have in Human-AI Teams
The introduction of computational systems in the last few decades has enabled humans to cross geographical, cultural, and even societal boundaries. Whether it was the invention of telephones or file sharing, new technologies have enabled humans to continuously work better together. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has one of the highest levels of potential as one of these technologies. Although AI has a multitude of functions within teaming, such as improving information sciences and analysis, one specific application of AI that has become a critical topic in recent years is the creation of AI systems that act as teammates alongside humans, in what is known as a human-AI team.
However, as AI transitions into teammate roles they will garner new responsibilities and abilities, which ultimately gives them a greater influence over teams\u27 shared goals and resources, otherwise known as teaming influence. Moreover, that increase in teaming influence will provide AI teammates with a level of social influence. Unfortunately, while research has observed the impact of teaming influence by examining humans\u27 perception and performance, an explicit and literal understanding of the social influence that facilitates long-term teaming change has yet to be created. This dissertation uses three studies to create a holistic understanding of the underlying social influence that AI teammates possess.
Study 1 identifies the fundamental existence of AI teammate social influence and how it pertains to teaming influence. Qualitative data demonstrates that social influence is naturally created as humans actively adapt around AI teammate teaming influence. Furthermore, mixed-methods results demonstrate that the alignment of AI teammate teaming influence with a human\u27s individual motives is the most critical factor in the acceptance of AI teammate teaming influence in existing teams.
Study 2 further examines the acceptance of AI teammate teaming and social influence and how the design of AI teammates and humans\u27 individual differences can impact this acceptance. The findings of Study 2 show that humans have the greatest levels of acceptance of AI teammate teaming influence that is comparative to their own teaming influence on a single task, but the acceptance of AI teammate teaming influence across multiple tasks generally decreases as teaming influence increases. Additionally, coworker endorsements are shown to increase the acceptance of high levels of AI teammate teaming influence, and humans that perceive the capabilities of technology, in general, to be greater are potentially more likely to accept AI teammate teaming influence.
Finally, Study 3 explores how the teaming and social influence possessed by AI teammates change when presented in a team that also contains teaming influence from multiple human teammates, which means social influence between humans also exists. Results demonstrate that AI teammate social influence can drive humans to prefer and observe their human teammates over their AI teammates, but humans\u27 behavioral adaptations are more centered around their AI teammates than their human teammates. These effects demonstrate that AI teammate social influence, when in the presence of human-human teaming and social influence, retains potency, but its effects are different when impacting either perception or behavior.
The above three studies fill a currently under-served research gap in human-AI teaming, which is both the understanding of AI teammate social influence and humans\u27 acceptance of it. In addition, each study conducted within this dissertation synthesizes its findings and contributions into actionable design recommendations that will serve as foundational design principles to allow the initial acceptance of AI teammates within society. Therefore, not only will the research community benefit from the results discussed throughout this dissertation, but so too will the developers, designers, and human teammates of human-AI teams
An interdisciplinary concept for human-centered explainable artificial intelligence - Investigating the impact of explainable AI on end-users
Since the 1950s, Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications have captivated people. However, this fascination has always been accompanied by disillusionment about the limitations of this technology. Today, machine learning methods such as Deep Neural Networks (DNN) are successfully used in various tasks. However, these methods also have limitations: Their complexity makes their decisions no longer comprehensible to humans - they are black-boxes. The research branch of Explainable AI (XAI) has addressed this problem by investigating how to make AI decisions comprehensible. This desire is not new. In the 1970s, developers of intrinsic explainable AI approaches, so-called white-boxes (e.g., rule-based systems), were dealing with AI explanations. Nowadays, with the increased use of AI systems in all areas of life, the design of comprehensible systems has become increasingly important. Developing such systems is part of Human-Centred AI (HCAI) research, which integrates human needs and abilities in the design of AI interfaces. For this, an understanding is needed of how humans perceive XAI and how AI explanations influence the interaction between humans and AI. One of the open questions concerns the investigation of XAI for end-users, i.e., people who have no expertise in AI but interact with such systems or are impacted by the system's decisions.
This dissertation investigates the impact of different levels of interactive XAI of white- and black-box AI systems on end-users perceptions. Based on an interdisciplinary concept presented in this work, it is examined how the content, type, and interface of explanations of DNN (black box) and rule-based systems (white box) are perceived by end-users. How XAI influences end-users mental models, trust, self-efficacy, cognitive workload, and emotional state regarding the AI system is the centre of the investigation. At the beginning of the dissertation, general concepts regarding AI, explanations, and psychological constructs of mental models, trust, self-efficacy, cognitive load, and emotions are introduced. Subsequently, related work regarding the design and investigation of XAI for users is presented. This serves as a basis for the concept of a Human-Centered Explainable AI (HC-XAI) presented in this dissertation, which combines an XAI design approach with user evaluations. The author pursues an interdisciplinary approach that integrates knowledge from the research areas of (X)AI, Human-Computer Interaction, and Psychology.
Based on this interdisciplinary concept, a five-step approach is derived and applied to illustrative surveys and experiments in the empirical part of this dissertation.
To illustrate the first two steps, a persona approach for HC-XAI is presented, and based on that, a template for designing personas is provided. To illustrate the usage of the template, three surveys are presented that ask end-users about their attitudes and expectations towards AI and XAI. The personas generated from the survey data indicate that end-users often lack knowledge of XAI and that their perception of it depends on demographic and personality-related characteristics.
Steps three to five deal with the design of XAI for concrete applications. For this, different levels of interactive XAI are presented and investigated in experiments with end-users. For this purpose, two rule-based systems (i.e., white-box) and four systems based on DNN (i.e., black-box) are used.
These are applied for three purposes: Cooperation & collaboration, education, and medical decision support. Six user studies were conducted for this purpose, which differed in the interactivity of the XAI system used.
The results show that end-users trust and mental models of AI depend strongly on the context of use and the design of the explanation itself. For example, explanations that a virtual agent mediates are shown to promote trust. The content and type of explanations are also perceived differently by users. The studies also show that end-users in different application contexts of XAI feel the desire for interactive explanations.
The dissertation concludes with a summary of the scientific contribution, points out limitations of the presented work, and gives an outlook on possible future research topics to integrate explanations into everyday AI systems and thus enable the comprehensible handling of AI for all people.Seit den 1950er Jahren haben Anwendungen der Künstlichen Intelligenz (KI) die Menschen in ihren Bann gezogen. Diese Faszination wurde jedoch stets von Ernüchterung über die Grenzen dieser Technologie begleitet. Heute werden Methoden des maschinellen Lernens wie Deep Neural Networks (DNN) erfolgreich für verschiedene Aufgaben eingesetzt. Doch auch diese Methoden haben ihre Grenzen: Durch ihre Komplexität sind ihre Entscheidungen für den Menschen nicht mehr nachvollziehbar - sie sind Black-Boxes. Der Forschungszweig der Erklärbaren KI (engl. XAI) hat sich diesem Problem angenommen und untersucht, wie man KI-Entscheidungen nachvollziehbar machen kann. Dieser Wunsch ist nicht neu. In den 1970er Jahren beschäftigten sich die Entwickler von intrinsisch erklärbaren KI-Ansätzen, so genannten White-Boxes (z. B. regelbasierte Systeme), mit KI-Erklärungen. Heutzutage, mit dem zunehmenden Einsatz von KI-Systemen in allen Lebensbereichen, wird die Gestaltung nachvollziehbarer Systeme immer wichtiger. Die Entwicklung solcher Systeme ist Teil der Menschzentrierten KI (engl. HCAI) Forschung, die menschliche Bedürfnisse und Fähigkeiten in die Gestaltung von KI-Schnittstellen integriert. Dafür ist ein Verständnis darüber erforderlich, wie Menschen XAI wahrnehmen und wie KI-Erklärungen die Interaktion zwischen Mensch und KI beeinflussen. Eine der offenen Fragen betrifft die Untersuchung von XAI für Endnutzer, d.h. Menschen, die keine Expertise in KI haben, aber mit solchen Systemen interagieren oder von deren Entscheidungen betroffen sind.
In dieser Dissertation wird untersucht, wie sich verschiedene Stufen interaktiver XAI von White- und Black-Box-KI-Systemen auf die Wahrnehmung der Endnutzer auswirken. Basierend auf einem interdisziplinären Konzept, das in dieser Arbeit vorgestellt wird, wird untersucht, wie der Inhalt, die Art und die Schnittstelle von Erklärungen von DNN (Black-Box) und regelbasierten Systemen (White-Box) von Endnutzern wahrgenommen werden. Wie XAI die mentalen Modelle, das Vertrauen, die Selbstwirksamkeit, die kognitive Belastung und den emotionalen Zustand der Endnutzer in Bezug auf das KI-System beeinflusst, steht im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung. Zu Beginn der Arbeit werden allgemeine Konzepte zu KI, Erklärungen und psychologische Konstrukte von mentalen Modellen, Vertrauen, Selbstwirksamkeit, kognitiver Belastung und Emotionen vorgestellt. Anschließend werden verwandte Arbeiten bezüglich dem Design und der Untersuchung von XAI für Nutzer präsentiert. Diese dienen als Grundlage für das in dieser Dissertation vorgestellte Konzept einer Menschzentrierten Erklärbaren KI (engl. HC-XAI), das einen XAI-Designansatz mit Nutzerevaluationen kombiniert. Die Autorin verfolgt einen interdisziplinären Ansatz, der Wissen aus den Forschungsbereichen (X)AI, Mensch-Computer-Interaktion und Psychologie integriert.
Auf der Grundlage dieses interdisziplinären Konzepts wird ein fünfstufiger Ansatz abgeleitet und im empirischen Teil dieser Arbeit auf exemplarische Umfragen und Experimente und angewendet.
Zur Veranschaulichung der ersten beiden Schritte wird ein Persona-Ansatz für HC-XAI vorgestellt und darauf aufbauend eine Vorlage für den Entwurf von Personas bereitgestellt. Um die Verwendung der Vorlage zu veranschaulichen, werden drei Umfragen präsentiert, in denen Endnutzer zu ihren Einstellungen und Erwartungen gegenüber KI und XAI befragt werden. Die aus den Umfragedaten generierten Personas zeigen, dass es den Endnutzern oft an Wissen über XAI mangelt und dass ihre Wahrnehmung dessen von demografischen und persönlichkeitsbezogenen Merkmalen abhängt.
Die Schritte drei bis fünf befassen sich mit der Gestaltung von XAI für konkrete Anwendungen. Hierzu werden verschiedene Stufen interaktiver XAI vorgestellt und in Experimenten mit Endanwendern untersucht. Zu diesem Zweck werden zwei regelbasierte Systeme (White-Box) und vier auf DNN basierende Systeme (Black-Box) verwendet.
Diese werden für drei Zwecke eingesetzt: Kooperation & Kollaboration, Bildung und medizinische Entscheidungsunterstützung. Hierzu wurden sechs Nutzerstudien durchgeführt, die sich in der Interaktivität des verwendeten XAI-Systems unterschieden.
Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass das Vertrauen und die mentalen Modelle der Endnutzer in KI stark vom Nutzungskontext und der Gestaltung der Erklärung selbst abhängen. Es hat sich beispielsweise gezeigt, dass Erklärungen, die von einem virtuellen Agenten vermittelt werden, das Vertrauen fördern. Auch der Inhalt und die Art der Erklärungen werden von den Nutzern unterschiedlich wahrgenommen. Die Studien zeigen zudem, dass Endnutzer in unterschiedlichen Anwendungskontexten von XAI den Wunsch nach interaktiven Erklärungen verspüren.
Die Dissertation schließt mit einer Zusammenfassung des wissenschaftlichen Beitrags, weist auf Grenzen der vorgestellten Arbeit hin und gibt einen Ausblick auf mögliche zukünftige Forschungsthemen, um Erklärungen in alltägliche KI-Systeme zu integrieren und damit den verständlichen Umgang mit KI für alle Menschen zu ermöglichen
NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION WITH PHYSIOLOGICAL SENSORS. THE AESTHETIC DOMAIN OF WEARABLES AND NEURAL NETWORKS
Historically, communication implies the transfer of information between bodies, yet this
phenomenon is constantly adapting to new technological and cultural standards. In a
digital context, it’s commonplace to envision systems that revolve around verbal modalities.
However, behavioural analysis grounded in psychology research calls attention to
the emotional information disclosed by non-verbal social cues, in particular, actions that
are involuntary. This notion has circulated heavily into various interdisciplinary computing
research fields, from which multiple studies have arisen, correlating non-verbal
activity to socio-affective inferences. These are often derived from some form of motion
capture and other wearable sensors, measuring the ‘invisible’ bioelectrical changes that
occur from inside the body.
This thesis proposes a motivation and methodology for using physiological sensory
data as an expressive resource for technology-mediated interactions. Initialised from a
thorough discussion on state-of-the-art technologies and established design principles
regarding this topic, then applied to a novel approach alongside a selection of practice
works to compliment this. We advocate for aesthetic experience, experimenting with
abstract representations. Atypically from prevailing Affective Computing systems, the
intention is not to infer or classify emotion but rather to create new opportunities for rich
gestural exchange, unconfined to the verbal domain.
Given the preliminary proposition of non-representation, we justify a correspondence
with modern Machine Learning and multimedia interaction strategies, applying an iterative,
human-centred approach to improve personalisation without the compromising
emotional potential of bodily gesture. Where related studies in the past have successfully
provoked strong design concepts through innovative fabrications, these are typically limited
to simple linear, one-to-one mappings and often neglect multi-user environments;
we foresee a vast potential. In our use cases, we adopt neural network architectures to
generate highly granular biofeedback from low-dimensional input data.
We present the following proof-of-concepts: Breathing Correspondence, a wearable
biofeedback system inspired by Somaesthetic design principles; Latent Steps, a real-time auto-encoder to represent bodily experiences from sensor data, designed for dance performance;
and Anti-Social Distancing Ensemble, an installation for public space interventions,
analysing physical distance to generate a collective soundscape. Key findings are
extracted from the individual reports to formulate an extensive technical and theoretical
framework around this topic. The projects first aim to embrace some alternative perspectives
already established within Affective Computing research. From here, these concepts
evolve deeper, bridging theories from contemporary creative and technical practices with
the advancement of biomedical technologies.Historicamente, os processos de comunicação implicam a transferência de informação
entre organismos, mas este fenómeno está constantemente a adaptar-se a novos padrões
tecnológicos e culturais. Num contexto digital, é comum encontrar sistemas que giram
em torno de modalidades verbais. Contudo, a análise comportamental fundamentada
na investigação psicológica chama a atenção para a informação emocional revelada por
sinais sociais não verbais, em particular, acções que são involuntárias. Esta noção circulou
fortemente em vários campos interdisciplinares de investigação na área das ciências da
computação, dos quais surgiram múltiplos estudos, correlacionando a actividade nãoverbal
com inferências sócio-afectivas. Estes são frequentemente derivados de alguma
forma de captura de movimento e sensores “wearable”, medindo as alterações bioeléctricas
“invisíveis” que ocorrem no interior do corpo.
Nesta tese, propomos uma motivação e metodologia para a utilização de dados sensoriais
fisiológicos como um recurso expressivo para interacções mediadas pela tecnologia.
Iniciada a partir de uma discussão aprofundada sobre tecnologias de ponta e princípios
de concepção estabelecidos relativamente a este tópico, depois aplicada a uma nova abordagem,
juntamente com uma selecção de trabalhos práticos, para complementar esta.
Defendemos a experiência estética, experimentando com representações abstractas. Contrariamente
aos sistemas de Computação Afectiva predominantes, a intenção não é inferir
ou classificar a emoção, mas sim criar novas oportunidades para uma rica troca gestual,
não confinada ao domínio verbal.
Dada a proposta preliminar de não representação, justificamos uma correspondência
com estratégias modernas de Machine Learning e interacção multimédia, aplicando uma
abordagem iterativa e centrada no ser humano para melhorar a personalização sem o
potencial emocional comprometedor do gesto corporal. Nos casos em que estudos anteriores
demonstraram com sucesso conceitos de design fortes através de fabricações
inovadoras, estes limitam-se tipicamente a simples mapeamentos lineares, um-para-um,
e muitas vezes negligenciam ambientes multi-utilizadores; com este trabalho, prevemos
um potencial alargado. Nos nossos casos de utilização, adoptamos arquitecturas de redes
neurais para gerar biofeedback altamente granular a partir de dados de entrada de baixa dimensão.
Apresentamos as seguintes provas de conceitos: Breathing Correspondence, um sistema
de biofeedback wearable inspirado nos princípios de design somaestético; Latent
Steps, um modelo autoencoder em tempo real para representar experiências corporais
a partir de dados de sensores, concebido para desempenho de dança; e Anti-Social Distancing
Ensemble, uma instalação para intervenções no espaço público, analisando a
distância física para gerar uma paisagem sonora colectiva. Os principais resultados são
extraídos dos relatórios individuais, para formular um quadro técnico e teórico alargado
para expandir sobre este tópico. Os projectos têm como primeiro objectivo abraçar algumas
perspectivas alternativas às que já estão estabelecidas no âmbito da investigação
da Computação Afectiva. A partir daqui, estes conceitos evoluem mais profundamente,
fazendo a ponte entre as teorias das práticas criativas e técnicas contemporâneas com o
avanço das tecnologias biomédicas
Modern Socio-Technical Perspectives on Privacy
This open access book provides researchers and professionals with a foundational understanding of online privacy as well as insight into the socio-technical privacy issues that are most pertinent to modern information systems, covering several modern topics (e.g., privacy in social media, IoT) and underexplored areas (e.g., privacy accessibility, privacy for vulnerable populations, cross-cultural privacy). The book is structured in four parts, which follow after an introduction to privacy on both a technical and social level: Privacy Theory and Methods covers a range of theoretical lenses through which one can view the concept of privacy. The chapters in this part relate to modern privacy phenomena, thus emphasizing its relevance to our digital, networked lives. Next, Domains covers a number of areas in which privacy concerns and implications are particularly salient, including among others social media, healthcare, smart cities, wearable IT, and trackers. The Audiences section then highlights audiences that have traditionally been ignored when creating privacy-preserving experiences: people from other (non-Western) cultures, people with accessibility needs, adolescents, and people who are underrepresented in terms of their race, class, gender or sexual identity, religion or some combination. Finally, the chapters in Moving Forward outline approaches to privacy that move beyond one-size-fits-all solutions, explore ethical considerations, and describe the regulatory landscape that governs privacy through laws and policies. Perhaps even more so than the other chapters in this book, these chapters are forward-looking by using current personalized, ethical and legal approaches as a starting point for re-conceptualizations of privacy to serve the modern technological landscape. The book’s primary goal is to inform IT students, researchers, and professionals about both the fundamentals of online privacy and the issues that are most pertinent to modern information systems. Lecturers or teacherscan assign (parts of) the book for a “professional issues” course. IT professionals may select chapters covering domains and audiences relevant to their field of work, as well as the Moving Forward chapters that cover ethical and legal aspects. EG-ICE 2021 Workshop on Intelligent Computing in Engineering
The 28th EG-ICE International Workshop 2021 brings together international experts working at the interface between advanced computing and modern engineering challenges. Many engineering tasks require open-world resolutions to support multi-actor collaboration, coping with approximate models, providing effective engineer-computer interaction, search in multi-dimensional solution spaces, accommodating uncertainty, including specialist domain knowledge, performing sensor-data interpretation and dealing with incomplete knowledge. While results from computer science provide much initial support for resolution, adaptation is unavoidable and most importantly, feedback from addressing engineering challenges drives fundamental computer-science research. From Anecdotal Evidence to Quantitative Evaluation Methods:A Systematic Review on Evaluating Explainable AI
The rising popularity of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) to
understand high-performing black boxes, also raised the question of how to
evaluate explanations of machine learning (ML) models. While interpretability
and explainability are often presented as a subjectively validated binary
property, we consider it a multi-faceted concept. We identify 12 conceptual
properties, such as Compactness and Correctness, that should be evaluated for
comprehensively assessing the quality of an explanation. Our so-called Co-12
properties serve as categorization scheme for systematically reviewing the
evaluation practice of more than 300 papers published in the last 7 years at
major AI and ML conferences that introduce an XAI method. We find that 1 in 3
papers evaluate exclusively with anecdotal evidence, and 1 in 5 papers evaluate
with users. We also contribute to the call for objective, quantifiable
evaluation methods by presenting an extensive overview of quantitative XAI
evaluation methods. This systematic collection of evaluation methods provides
researchers and practitioners with concrete tools to thoroughly validate,
benchmark and compare new and existing XAI methods. This also opens up
opportunities to include quantitative metrics as optimization criteria during
model training in order to optimize for accuracy and interpretability
