    A survey of large-scale reasoning on the Web of data

    As more and more data is being generated by sensor networks, social media and organizations, the Webinterlinking this wealth of information becomes more complex. This is particularly true for the so-calledWeb of Data, in which data is semantically enriched and interlinked using ontologies. In this large anduncoordinated environment, reasoning can be used to check the consistency of the data and of asso-ciated ontologies, or to infer logical consequences which, in turn, can be used to obtain new insightsfrom the data. However, reasoning approaches need to be scalable in order to enable reasoning over theentire Web of Data. To address this problem, several high-performance reasoning systems, whichmainly implement distributed or parallel algorithms, have been proposed in the last few years. Thesesystems differ significantly; for instance in terms of reasoning expressivity, computational propertiessuch as completeness, or reasoning objectives. In order to provide afirst complete overview of thefield,this paper reports a systematic review of such scalable reasoning approaches over various ontologicallanguages, reporting details about the methods and over the conducted experiments. We highlight theshortcomings of these approaches and discuss some of the open problems related to performing scalablereasoning

    EXPRESS: Resource-oriented and RESTful Semantic Web services

    This thesis investigates an approach that simplifies the development of Semantic Web services (SWS) by removing the need for additional semantic descriptions.The most actively researched approaches to Semantic Web services introduce explicit semantic descriptions of services that are in addition to the existing semantic descriptions of the service domains. This increases their complexity and design overhead. The need for semantically describing the services in such approaches stems from their foundations in service-oriented computing, i.e. the extension of already existing service descriptions. This thesis demonstrates that adopting a resource-oriented approach based on REST will, in contrast to service-oriented approaches, eliminate the need for explicit semantic service descriptions and service vocabularies. This reduces the development efforts while retaining the significant functional capabilities.The approach proposed in this thesis, called EXPRESS (Expressing RESTful Semantic Services), utilises the similarities between REST and the Semantic Web, such as resource realisation, self-describing representations, and uniform interfaces. The semantics of a service is elicited from a resource’s semantic description in the domain ontology and the semantics of the uniform interface, hence eliminating the need for additional semantic descriptions. Moreover, stub-generation is a by-product of the mapping between entities in the domain ontology and resources.EXPRESS was developed to test the feasibility of eliminating explicit service descriptions and service vocabularies or ontologies, to explore the restrictions placed on domain ontologies as a result, to investigate the impact on the semantic quality of the description, and explore the benefits and costs to developers. To achieve this, an online demonstrator that allows users to generate stubs has been developed. In addition, a matchmaking experiment was conducted to show that the descriptions of the services are comparable to OWL-S in terms of their ability to be discovered, while improving the efficiency of discovery. Finally, an expert review was undertaken which provided evidence of EXPRESS’s simplicity and practicality when developing SWS from scratch

    Data and Text Mining Techniques for In-Domain and Cross-Domain Applications

    In the big data era, a wide amount of data has been generated in different domains, from social media to news feeds, from health care to genomic functionalities. When addressing a problem, we usually need to harness multiple disparate datasets. Data from different domains may follow different modalities, each of which has a different representation, distribution, scale and density. For example, text is usually represented as discrete sparse word count vectors, whereas an image is represented by pixel intensities, and so on. Nowadays plenty of Data Mining and Machine Learning techniques are proposed in literature, which have already achieved significant success in many knowledge engineering areas, including classification, regression and clustering. Anyway some challenging issues remain when tackling a new problem: how to represent the problem? What approach is better to use among the huge quantity of possibilities? What is the information to be used in the Machine Learning task and how to represent it? There exist any different domains from which borrow knowledge? This dissertation proposes some possible representation approaches for problems in different domains, from text mining to genomic analysis. In particular, one of the major contributions is a different way to represent a classical classification problem: instead of using an instance related to each object (a document, or a gene, or a social post, etc.) to be classified, it is proposed to use a pair of objects or a pair object-class, using the relationship between them as label. The application of this approach is tested on both flat and hierarchical text categorization datasets, where it potentially allows the efficient addition of new categories during classification. Furthermore, the same idea is used to extract conversational threads from an unregulated pool of messages and also to classify the biomedical literature based on the genomic features treated

    Knowledge and Management Models for Sustainable Growth

    In the last years sustainability has become a topic of global concern and a key issue in the strategic agenda of both business organizations and public authorities and organisations. Significant changes in business landscape, the emergence of new technology, including social media, the pressure of new social concerns, have called into question established conceptualizations of competitiveness, wealth creation and growth. New and unaddressed set of issues regarding how private and public organisations manage and invest their resources to create sustainable value have brought to light. In particular the increasing focus on environmental and social themes has suggested new dimensions to be taken into account in the value creation dynamics, both at organisations and communities level. For companies the need of integrating corporate social and environmental responsibility issues into strategy and daily business operations, pose profound challenges, which, in turn, involve numerous processes and complex decisions influenced by many stakeholders. Facing these challenges calls for the creation, use and exploitation of new knowledge as well as the development of proper management models, approaches and tools aimed to contribute to the development and realization of environmentally and socially sustainable business strategies and practices
