    Parsing Fortran-77 with proprietary extensions

    Far from the latest innovations in software development, many organizations still rely on old code written in "obsolete" programming languages. Because this source code is old and proven it often contributes significantly to the continuing success of these organizations. Yet to keep the applications relevant and running in an evolving environment, they sometimes need to be updated or migrated to new languages or new platforms. One difficulty of working with these "veteran languages" is being able to parse the source code to build a representation of it. Parsing can also allow modern software development tools and IDEs to offer better support to these veteran languages. We initiated a project between our group and the Framatome company to help migrate old Fortran-77 with proprietary extensions (called Esope) into more modern Fortran.     The Design and Implementation of Bloqqi - A Feature-Based Diagram Programming Language

    This dissertation presents the design and implementation of a new block diagram programming language, Bloqqi, for building control systems with focus on variability. The language has been developed in collaboration with industry with the goal of reducing engineering time and improving reuse of functionality.When building a control system for a plant, there are typically different variants of the same base functionality. A plant may have several variants of a tank, for example, one variant with heating and another one without. This dissertation presents novel language mechanisms for describing this kind of variability, based on diagram inheritance. For instance, Bloqqi supports specifying what features, like heating, the base functionality can have. These specifications are then used to automatically derive smart-editing support in the form of a feature-based wizard. In this wizard, the user can select what features the base functionality should have, and code is generated corresponding to these features. The new language mechanisms allow feature-based libraries to be created and extended in a modular way.This dissertation presents techniques for implementing rich graphical editors with smart editing support based on semantic analysis. A prototype compiler and graphical editor have been implemented for the language, using the semantic formalism reference attribute grammars (RAGs). RAGs allow tools to share the semantic specifications, which makes it possible to modularly extend the compiler with support for advanced semantic feedback to the user of the graphical editor

    Towards Language-Oriented Modeling

    In this habilitation à diriger des recherches (HDR), I review a decade of research work in the fields of Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) and Software Language Engineering (SLE). I propose contributions to support a language-oriented modeling, with the particular focus on enabling early validation & verification (V&V) of software-intensive systems. I first present foundational concepts and engineering facilities which help to capture the core domain knowledge into the various heterogeneous concerns of DSMLs (aka. metamodeling in the small), with a particular focus on executable DSMLs to automate the development of dynamic V&V tools. Then, I propose structural and behavioral DSML interfaces, and associated composition operators to reuse and integrate multiple DSMLs (aka. metamodeling in the large).In these research activities I explore various breakthroughs in terms of modularity and reusability of DSMLs. I also propose an original approach which bridges the gap between the concurrency theory and the algorithm theory, to integrate a formal concurrency model into the execution semantics of DSMLs. All the contributions have been implemented in software platforms — the language workbench Melange and the GEMOC studio – and experienced in real-world case studies to assess their validity. In this context, I also founded the GEMOC initiative, an attempt to federate the community on the grand challenge of the globalization of modeling languages
