    Perspectives in deductive databases

AbstractI discuss my experiences, some of the work that I have done, and related work that influenced me, concerning deductive databases, over the last 30 years. I divide this time period into three roughly equal parts: 1957–1968, 1969–1978, 1979–present. For the first I describe how my interest started in deductive databases in 1957, at a time when the field of databases did not even exist. I describe work in the beginning years, leading to the start of deductive databases about 1968 with the work of Cordell Green and Bertram Raphael. The second period saw a great deal of work in theorem providing as well as the introduction of logic programming. The existence and importance of deductive databases as a formal and viable discipline received its impetus at a workshop held in Toulouse, France, in 1977, which culminated in the book Logic and Data Bases. The relationship of deductive databases and logic programming was recognized at that time. During the third period we have seen formal theories of databases come about as an outgrowth of that work, and the recognition that artificial intelligence and deductive databases are closely related, at least through the so-called expert database systems. I expect that the relationships between techniques from formal logic, databases, logic programming, and artificial intelligence will continue to be explored and the field of deductive databases will become a more prominent area of computer science in coming years

A Framework for the Automatic Physical Configuration and Tuning of a Mysql Community Server

    Get PDF
Manual physical configuration and tuning of database servers, is a complicated task requiring a high level of expertise. Database administrators must consider numerous possibilities, to determine a candidate configuration for implementation. In recent times database vendors have responded to this problem, providing solutions which can automatically configure and tune their products. Poor configuration choices, resulting in performance degradation commonplace in manual configurations, have been significantly reduced in these solutions. However, no such solution exists for MySQL Community Server. This thesis, proposes a novel framework for automatically tuning a MySQL Community Server. A first iteration of the framework has been built and is presented in this paper together with its performance measurements

    CHOOSING A DATABASE QUERY LANGUAGE

    Get PDF
A methodology is presented for selecting query languages suitable for certain user types. The method is based on a trend model of query language development on the dimensions of functional capabilities and usability. Expected developments are exemplified by the description of "second generationâ database query languages. From the trend model are derived: a classification scheme for query languages; a criterion hierarchy for query language evaluation; a comprehensive classification scheme of query language users and their requirements; and recommendations for allocating language classes to user types. The method integrates the results of existing human factors studies and provides a structured framework for future research.Information Systems Working Papers Serie

Обзор подходов к организации физического уровня в СУБД

In this paper we survey various DBMS physical design options. We will consider both vertical and horizontal partitioning, and briefly cover replication. This survey is not limited only to local systems, but also includes distributed ones. The latter adds a new interesting question — how to actually distribute data among several processing nodes. Aside from theoretical approaches we consider the practical ones, implemented in any contemporary DBMS. We cover these aspects not only from user, but also architect and programmer perspectives.

Comprehensive survey on big data privacy protection

In recent years, the ever-mounting problem of Internet phishing has been threatening the secure propagation of sensitive data over the web, thereby resulting in either outright decline of data distribution or inaccurate data distribution from several data providers. Therefore, user privacy has evolved into a critical issue in various data mining operations. User privacy has turned out to be a foremost criterion for allowing the transfer of confidential information. The intense surge in storing the personal data of customers (i.e., big data) has resulted in a new research area, which is referred to as privacy-preserving data mining (PPDM). A key issue of PPDM is how to manipulate data using a specific approach to enable the development of a good data mining model on modified data, thereby meeting a specified privacy need with minimum loss of information for the intended data analysis task. The current review study aims to utilize the tasks of data mining operations without risking the security of individuals’ sensitive information, particularly at the record level. To this end, PPDM techniques are reviewed and classified using various approaches for data modification. Furthermore, a critical comparative analysis is performed for the advantages and drawbacks of PPDM techniques. This review study also elaborates on the existing challenges and unresolved issues in PPDM.Published versio

Requirements of admission to various degree programs are given as well as the course offerings in the areas of acoustics, aeronautics, environmental modelling, materials science, and structures and dynamics. Research facilities for each field of study are described. Presentations and publications (including dissertations and theses) generated by each program are listed as well as faculty members visting scientists and engineers

How are topics born? Understanding the research dynamics preceding the emergence of new areas

The ability to promptly recognise new research trends is strategic for many stake- holders, including universities, institutional funding bodies, academic publishers and companies. While the literature describes several approaches which aim to identify the emergence of new research topics early in their lifecycle, these rely on the assumption that the topic in question is already associated with a number of publications and consistently referred to by a community of researchers. Hence, detecting the emergence of a new research area at an embryonic stage, i.e., before the topic has been consistently labelled by a community of researchers and associated with a number of publications, is still an open challenge. In this paper, we begin to address this challenge by performing a study of the dynamics preceding the creation of new topics. This study indicates that the emergence of a new topic is anticipated by a significant increase in the pace of collaboration between relevant research areas, which can be seen as the ‘parents’ of the new topic. These initial findings (i) confirm our hypothesis that it is possible in principle to detect the emergence of a new topic at the embryonic stage, (ii) provide new empirical evidence supporting relevant theories in Philosophy of Science, and also (iii) suggest that new topics tend to emerge in an environment in which weakly interconnected research areas begin to cross-fertilise
