24th International Conference on Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases
In the last three decades information modelling and knowledge bases have become essentially important subjects not only in academic communities related to information systems and computer science but also in the business area where information technology is applied. The series of European â Japanese Conference on Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases (EJC) originally started as a co-operation initiative between Japan and Finland in 1982. The practical operations were then organised by professor Ohsuga in Japan and professors Hannu Kangassalo and Hannu Jaakkola in Finland (Nordic countries). Geographical scope has expanded to cover Europe and also other countries. Workshop characteristic - discussion, enough time for presentations and limited number of participants (50) / papers (30) - is typical for the conference. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to: 1. Conceptual modelling: Modelling and specification languages; Domain-specific conceptual modelling; Concepts, concept theories and ontologies; Conceptual modelling of large and heterogeneous systems; Conceptual modelling of spatial, temporal and biological data; Methods for developing, validating and communicating conceptual models. 2. Knowledge and information modelling and discovery: Knowledge discovery, knowledge representation and knowledge management; Advanced data mining and analysis methods; Conceptions of knowledge and information; Modelling information requirements; Intelligent information systems; Information recognition and information modelling. 3. Linguistic modelling: Models of HCI; Information delivery to users; Intelligent informal querying; Linguistic foundation of information and knowledge; Fuzzy linguistic models; Philosophical and linguistic foundations of conceptual models. 4. Cross-cultural communication and social computing: Cross-cultural support systems; Integration, evolution and migration of systems; Collaborative societies; Multicultural web-based software systems; Intercultural collaboration and support systems; Social computing, behavioral modeling and prediction. 5. Environmental modelling and engineering: Environmental information systems (architecture); Spatial, temporal and observational information systems; Large-scale environmental systems; Collaborative knowledge base systems; Agent concepts and conceptualisation; Hazard prediction, prevention and steering systems. 6. Multimedia data modelling and systems: Modelling multimedia information and knowledge; Contentbased multimedia data management; Content-based multimedia retrieval; Privacy and context enhancing technologies; Semantics and pragmatics of multimedia data; Metadata for multimedia information systems. Overall we received 56 submissions. After careful evaluation, 16 papers have been selected as long paper, 17 papers as short papers, 5 papers as position papers, and 3 papers for presentation of perspective challenges. We thank all colleagues for their support of this issue of the EJC conference, especially the program committee, the organising committee, and the programme coordination team. The long and the short papers presented in the conference are revised after the conference and published in the Series of âFrontiers in Artificial Intelligenceâ by IOS Press (Amsterdam). The books âInformation Modelling and Knowledge Basesâ are edited by the Editing Committee of the conference. We believe that the conference will be productive and fruitful in the advance of research and application of information modelling and knowledge bases. Bernhard Thalheim Hannu Jaakkola Yasushi Kiyok

eLearning in diverse Subject-Matter Contexts: An explorative study
Anwendungen/Charakteristiken in verschiedenen fachspezifischen Kontexten
erforschen, um potenzielle LĂŒcken zu identifizieren. The overall mission of eLearning is to provide instructors and learners with the wide range of instructional
opportunities to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in any
educational context. eLearning reflects diverse applications of
technologies embedded into different educational contexts; and it is often
misunderstood. Furthermore, the dynamic development of emerging
technologies introduces new potentials for more creative instructional
design patterns in terms of TELEs that foster active learning with high
levels of involvement; thus instructors become no more tied to the
educational technology offerings of institutions/organizations. An
epistemological analysis is necessary for an extensive understanding about
sciences and their subject-matter contextual differences; to be able to
compare and contrast their eLearning practices in a more accurate and
discursive way. Therefore, this dissertation acts as an explorative study
which draws a framework of âsubject-matter context-basedâ eLearning
practices of diverse scientific fields in order to find out whether their
eLearning practices are, indeed, demonstrating differences likewise their
philosophy, or not. The results of this dissertation demonstrate that the
eLearning awareness levels of instructors are not satisfactory to embrace
the use of sophisticate eLearning practices independent from their
subject-matter context; although, there is a clear-cut distinction between
the eLearning practices of humanities/social sciencesâ and engineering
sciencesâ subject-matter contexts. Eventually, more research studies
investigating the eLearning practices/characteristics of diverse
subject-matter contexts is required to identify potential gaps
An aesthetic for sustainable interactions in product-service systems?
Copyright @ 2012 Greenleaf PublishingEco-efficient Product-Service System (PSS) innovations represent a promising approach to sustainability. However the application of this concept is still very limited because its implementation and diffusion is hindered by several barriers (cultural, corporate and regulative ones). The paper investigates the barriers that affect the attractiveness and acceptation of eco-efficient PSS alternatives, and opens the debate on the aesthetic of eco-efficient PSS, and the way in which aesthetic could enhance some specific inner qualities of this kinds of innovations. Integrating insights from semiotics, the paper outlines some first research hypothesis on how the aesthetic elements of an eco-efficient PSS could facilitate user attraction, acceptation and satisfaction
The Javanese local wisdom described in Murwakala performed in the oral tradition of ruwatan
Abstract: This paper discusses the local wisdom described in Murwakala performed in the oral tradition of Ruwatan . Ruwatan is the Javanese traditional ceremony done in order to release the Sukerta âs life from Bathara Kala âs threat. There are certain groups of people who believe that ruwatan is a ceremony that has to be done by the Sukerta ; if they have not done it, they think that they have not done their responsibility and if they cannot do that, they will suffer from Bathara Kala âs threat (Subalidinata, 1985: 3). Ruwatan was done for the first time in the 17th century; then, it has been done continually every year, from generation to generation up to recent days. It shows the interesting literary phenomenon that Murwakala which was rooted in Javanese culture can be understood and believed by not only Javanese but also other tribes in Indonesia. It is reasonable because Murwakala is assumed to show the Javanese local wisdom related to human existence and it is described through the characters of Murwakala . To find out this local wisdom, the writer used the theory of post-structuralism of narrative proposed by Jonathan Culler in which there are two steps of analyzing the narration. These steps are usually called double logic: by considering the text as a discourse and revealing the significance of the text based on the textâs thematic structure
THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANTI-CORRUPTION EDUCATION (AN EVALUATION STUDY ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF LITERATURE STUDY OF ANTI-CORRUPTION EDUCATION)
The purpose of this research is to develop learning tools as well as test the effectiveness of the
implementation of anti-corruption education. The research method refers to the development of procedural
models, which is descriptive, that shows the steps to produce a product that is effectively used at schools, not to
test theories. The research procedures of every stage of development were done through expert assessment,
individual assessment, group assessment, and field assessment. The model system approach, which was done to
the formative evaluation measures, was developed by Dick & Carey. The trials included learning experts
assessment, content experts assessment, learning media experts assessment, individual assessment, group
assessment, and field assessment. The results of the assessment trials were used as an input to improve product
development which was conducted using the t test (Paired Samples Test) to determine the effectiveness of the
teaching materials. Descriptive quantitative analysis techniques were used to compare the competence of
students before and after the use of teaching materials through the pretest and posttest which showed significant
results, namely the difference in the value of pretest and posttest. It means anti-corruption education teaching
materials are very effectively implemented to the students
THE ROLE OF JAVANESE CULTURE IN CHARACTER BUILDING AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Nowadays, character education becomes a major concern in Indonesia. Character development has been done
by various strategy, but the results is yet to be seen. Character development should beginin elementary school
in order that the children's charactercould formed early so that it could be developed until they are mature.
One of the efforts of character building is integrating the local wisdom in learning. One of them is the
Javanese culture. Javanese culture has a variety of rules called the "unggah-ungguh" that always give good
models to the public community, especially to the Javanese. Along with the times, the Javanese culture that
upholds ethics began to degraded and replaced by foreign cultures that came later. The parentsâ roles in
instilling the Javanese culture to their children also decreased gradually. This paper will examine the Javanese
cultureâs roles toward the character building in elementary schoolsâ students. Descriptive method supported by
a depth review of the literature and the previous studies is used in this paper as a method. Based on the results
of these reviews, we obtain some information about the types and mechanisms of Javanese culture in character
building of students, especially elementary school students
Social Emotional Development and Character as the Focus of the Education Policy
Abstract The importance of emotional and social skills of the character is perceived today for students, communities and workers. In view of the number of risky behavior in our society today, for example, drug use, violence, and other forms of emotional, excessive feelings of frustration and so forth are also venturing into the world of education experienced by students in Indonesia. The problems being faced by this country has always focused on character education. Social learning emotional is a process where children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve goals that are positive, feel and show empathy for others, building and maintaining a positive relationships and make a responsible decision. This learning appears when an understanding that learning in the context of a supportive relationship that makes learning challenging, interesting, and meaningful. And this is best done through effective classroom instruction, students' involvement in positive activities in and out of the classroom, and parents are spacious and community involvement in the planning, implementation, and evaluation. Social emotional learning and character is considered very effective if imposed from preschool through high school. Educators, parents, and policy makers synergize and ensure that the core competencies of social and emotional learning is necessary for the functioning of life for students effective and these skills need to be taught.
