Research and development in science and technology in GCC countries: role of information centres and libraries
This research study identifies the role of library and information centres at the major science
and technology related universities and research institutes in the six GeC countries i.e.
Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates, in relation to the
institutes/organisations research and development activities. It also had a comparative aspect
in that it examined information resources and information services available in the
institutes/organisations under study with users perceptions on the effectiveness and efficiency of library and information services. A survey research design utilizing questionnaires was
chosen as the most appropriate and effective method for gathering the data needed with
intensive interviews with academe, Deans/Directors of Library Information Centres and R&D personnel to answer the study's research questions. The different populations were queried
including the Chief Executives of institutes/organisations, Deans/Directors of Library and
Information Centres and selected R&D personnel associated with them. It was found that in
spite of large library collections and a number of de-centralised library systems in all the
universities, information services available to the R&D personnel were inadequate. The
fmdings of this investigation provided the means for the development of the proposed
regional and national library/information network systems for successful library and
information services model presented in this study. As an alternative a GeC infonnation
subsystem GCC-SIST has been recommended along with emphasis on an electronic
information system
Information Seeking Behavior and User Satisfaction of University Instructors: A Case Study
This study investigates information-seeking behavior and satisfaction level of teachers of National Textile University, Pakistan. A questionnaire collected data on preferred types of information sources and formats, methods for getting information, and level of user satisfaction of library services. The findings reveal that books, communication with colleagues and friends within NTU, journal articles, and communication with colleagues and friends in industry were the most preferred information sources. Both electronic/digital and printed formats were equally preferred by the respondents. The use of Internet and email is widespread. A majority of respondents prefer to visit the library themselves to get the required information. Respondents were generally satisfied with the quality of NTU library services, but they recommended increasing the collection to meet subject specific as well as leisure needs
Universities in Arab countries
Half the Arab universitiies in existence today were established after 1970. Enrolment has increased rapidly, leading to overcrowding, unqualified faculty, and insufficient equipment and facilities. Several Arab nations have moved to control (in some cases, to reduce) enrolment. They have done this partly because of the fall in oil revenues, and partly in recognition of the problems related to the rapid growth of the university systems. As student enrolment expanded rapidly, the quality of education suffered and many universities became less attractive to highly trained faculty. This pattern has contributed to the national and regional brain drain. The cost of underwriting university education at a time of slow economic expansion raises the issue of whether it is better to have unemployed high school graduates or unemployed university graduates.Teaching and Learning,Gender and Education,Tertiary Education,Girls Education,Curriculum&Instruction

Multinational perspectives on information technology from academia and industry
As the term \u27information technology\u27 has many meanings for various stakeholders and continues to evolve, this work presents a comprehensive approach for developing curriculum guidelines for rigorous, high quality, bachelor\u27s degree programs in information technology (IT) to prepare successful graduates for a future global technological society. The aim is to address three research questions in the context of IT concerning (1) the educational frameworks relevant for academics and students of IT, (2) the pathways into IT programs, and (3) graduates\u27 preparation for meeting future technologies. The analysis of current trends comes from survey data of IT faculty members and professional IT industry leaders. With these analyses, the IT Model Curricula of CC2005, IT2008, IT2017, extensive literature review, and the multinational insights of the authors into the status of IT, this paper presents a comprehensive overview and discussion of future directions of global IT education toward 2025
