Finite-Block-Length Analysis in Classical and Quantum Information Theory
Coding technology is used in several information processing tasks. In
particular, when noise during transmission disturbs communications, coding
technology is employed to protect the information. However, there are two types
of coding technology: coding in classical information theory and coding in
quantum information theory. Although the physical media used to transmit
information ultimately obey quantum mechanics, we need to choose the type of
coding depending on the kind of information device, classical or quantum, that
is being used. In both branches of information theory, there are many elegant
theoretical results under the ideal assumption that an infinitely large system
is available. In a realistic situation, we need to account for finite size
effects. The present paper reviews finite size effects in classical and quantum

Distributed video coding in wireless multimedia sensor network for multimedia broadcasting
Recently the development of Distributed Video Coding (DVC) has provided the promising theory
support to realize the infrastructure of Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN), which composed of autonomous hardware for capturing and transmission of quality audio-visual content. The implementation of DVC in WMSN can better solve the problem of energy constraint of the sensor nodes due to the benefit of lower computational encoder in DVC. In this paper, a practical DVC scheme, pixel-domain Wyner-Ziv(PDWZ) video
coding, with slice structure and adaptive rate selection(ARS) is proposed to solve the certain problems when applying DVC into WMSN. Firstly, the proposed slice structure in PDWZ has extended the feasibility of PDWZ to work with any interleaver size used in Slepian-wolf turbo codec for heterogeneous applications. Meanwhile,
based on the slice structure, an adaptive code rate selection has been proposed aiming at reduce the system delay occurred in feedback request. The simulation results clearly showed the enhancement in R-D performance and perceptual quality. It also can be observed that system delay caused by frequent feedback is greatly reduced, which gives a promising support for WMSN with low latency and facilitates the QoS management
Space-time domain decomposition for advection-diffusion problems in mixed formulations
This paper is concerned with the numerical solution of porous-media flow and
transport problems , i. e. heterogeneous, advection-diffusion problems. Its aim
is to investigate numerical schemes for these problems in which different time
steps can be used in different parts of the domain. Global-in-time,
non-overlapping domain-decomposition methods are coupled with operator
splitting making possible the different treatment of the advection and
diffusion terms. Two domain-decomposition methods are considered: one uses the
time-dependent Steklov--Poincar{\'e} operator and the other uses optimized
Schwarz waveform relaxation (OSWR) based on Robin transmission conditions. For
each method, a mixed formulation of an interface problem on the space-time
interface is derived, and different time grids are employed to adapt to
different time scales in the subdomains. A generalized Neumann-Neumann
preconditioner is proposed for the first method. To illustrate the two methods
numerical results for two-dimensional problems with strong heterogeneities are
presented. These include both academic problems and more realistic prototypes
for simulations for the underground storage of nuclear waste
Performance analysis with network-enhanced complexities: On fading measurements, event-triggered mechanisms, and cyber attacks

For networked systems, especially large-scale systems such as multiagent systems and systems over sensor networks, the complexities are inevitably enhanced in terms of their degrees or intensities because of the usage of the communication networks. Therefore, it would be interesting to (1) examine how this kind of network-enhanced complexities affects the control or filtering performance; and (2) develop some suitable approaches for controller/filter design problems. In this paper, we aim to survey some recent advances on the performance analysis and synthesis with three sorts of fashionable network-enhanced complexities, namely, fading measurements, event-triggered mechanisms, and attack behaviors of adversaries. First, these three kinds of complexities are introduced in detail according to their engineering backgrounds, dynamical characteristic, and modelling techniques. Then, the developments of the performance analysis and synthesis issues for various networked systems are systematically reviewed. Wireless industrial monitoring and control networks: the journey so far and the road ahead
While traditional wired communication technologies have played a crucial role in industrial monitoring and control networks over the past few decades, they are increasingly proving to be inadequate to meet the highly dynamic and stringent demands of today’s industrial applications, primarily due to the very rigid nature of wired infrastructures. Wireless technology, however, through its increased pervasiveness, has the potential to revolutionize the industry, not only by mitigating the problems faced by wired solutions, but also by introducing a completely new class of applications. While present day wireless technologies made some preliminary inroads in the monitoring domain, they still have severe limitations especially when real-time, reliable distributed control operations are concerned. This article provides the reader with an overview of existing wireless technologies commonly used in the monitoring and control industry. It highlights the pros and cons of each technology and assesses the degree to which each technology is able to meet the stringent demands of industrial monitoring and control networks. Additionally, it summarizes mechanisms proposed by academia, especially serving critical applications by addressing the real-time and reliability requirements of industrial process automation. The article also describes certain key research problems from the physical layer communication for sensor networks and the wireless networking perspective that have yet to be addressed to allow the successful use of wireless technologies in industrial monitoring and control networks
Extremal Properties of Three Dimensional Sensor Networks with Applications
In this paper, we analyze various critical transmitting/sensing ranges for
connectivity and coverage in three-dimensional sensor networks. As in other
large-scale complex systems, many global parameters of sensor networks undergo
phase transitions: For a given property of the network, there is a critical
threshold, corresponding to the minimum amount of the communication effort or
power expenditure by individual nodes, above (resp. below) which the property
exists with high (resp. a low) probability. For sensor networks, properties of
interest include simple and multiple degrees of connectivity/coverage. First,
we investigate the network topology according to the region of deployment, the
number of deployed sensors and their transmitting/sensing ranges. More
specifically, we consider the following problems: Assume that nodes, each
capable of sensing events within a radius of , are randomly and uniformly
distributed in a 3-dimensional region of volume , how large
must the sensing range be to ensure a given degree of coverage of the region to
monitor? For a given transmission range, what is the minimum (resp. maximum)
degree of the network? What is then the typical hop-diameter of the underlying
network? Next, we show how these results affect algorithmic aspects of the
network by designing specific distributed protocols for sensor networks
Convexity and Robustness of Dynamic Traffic Assignment and Freeway Network Control
We study the use of the System Optimum (SO) Dynamic Traffic Assignment (DTA)
problem to design optimal traffic flow controls for freeway networks as modeled
by the Cell Transmission Model, using variable speed limit, ramp metering, and
routing. We consider two optimal control problems: the DTA problem, where
turning ratios are part of the control inputs, and the Freeway Network Control
(FNC), where turning ratios are instead assigned exogenous parameters. It is
known that relaxation of the supply and demand constraints in the cell-based
formulations of the DTA problem results in a linear program. However, solutions
to the relaxed problem can be infeasible with respect to traffic dynamics.
Previous work has shown that such solutions can be made feasible by proper
choice of ramp metering and variable speed limit control for specific traffic
networks. We extend this procedure to arbitrary networks and provide insight
into the structure and robustness of the proposed optimal controllers. For a
network consisting only of ordinary, merge, and diverge junctions, where the
cells have linear demand functions and affine supply functions with identical
slopes, and the cost is the total traffic volume, we show, using the maximum
principle, that variable speed limits are not needed in order to achieve
optimality in the FNC problem, and ramp metering is sufficient. We also prove
bounds on perturbation of the controlled system trajectory in terms of
perturbations in initial traffic volume and exogenous inflows. These bounds,
which leverage monotonicity properties of the controlled trajectory, are shown
to be in close agreement with numerical simulation results
