Probabilistic DCS: An RFID reader-to-reader anti-collision protocol
The wide adoption of radio frequency identification (RFID) for applications requiring a large number of tags and readers makes critical the reader-to-reader collision problem. Various anti-collision protocols have been proposed, but the majority require considerable additional resources and costs. Distributed color system (DCS) is a state-of-the-art protocol based on time division, without noteworthy additional requirements. This paper presents the probabilistic DCS (PDCS) reader-to-reader anti-collision protocol which employs probabilistic collision resolution. Differently from previous time division protocols, PDCS allows multichannel transmissions, according to international RFID regulations. A theoretical analysis is provided in order to clearly identify the behavior of the additional parameter representing the probability. The proposed protocol maintains the features of DCS, achieving more efficiency. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that the number of reader-to-reader collisions after a slot change is decreased by over 30%. The simulation analysis validates the theoretical results, and shows that PDCS reaches better performance than state-of-the-art reader-to-reader anti-collision protocol
Perfect tag identification protocol in RFID networks
Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) systems are becoming more and more
popular in the field of ubiquitous computing, in particular for objects
identification. An RFID system is composed by one or more readers and a number
of tags. One of the main issues in an RFID network is the fast and reliable
identification of all tags in the reader range. The reader issues some queries,
and tags properly answer. Then, the reader must identify the tags from such
answers. This is crucial for most applications. Since the transmission medium
is shared, the typical problem to be faced is a MAC-like one, i.e. to avoid or
limit the number of tags transmission collisions. We propose a protocol which,
under some assumptions about transmission techniques, always achieves a 100%
perfomance. It is based on a proper recursive splitting of the concurrent tags
sets, until all tags have been identified. The other approaches present in
literature have performances of about 42% in the average at most. The
counterpart is a more sophisticated hardware to be deployed in the manufacture

The issue of data exchange in the UHF band RFID system with an semi-passive transponder
The article discusses the specifics of data exchange in the UHF band RFID systems using semi-passive transponders. In addition to the antenna and the RFID chip, there is also an additional source of energy (eg. battery) in the structure of such transponder. The battery may be used to implement additional functions such as the ability to measure physical quantities (eg. temperature, humidity). In this regard, particular attention was paid to the discussion of phases of communication between transponder and RWD associated with additional data (measurement results). An analysis of transmitted data frames has been presented. The preliminary results of the measurements have shown that the number of memory block transmitted from transponder has an impact on the effectiveness of RFID system
Antenna Design for Semi-Passive UHF RFID Transponder with Energy Harvester
A novel microstrip antenna which is dedicated to UHF semi-passive RFID transponders with an energy harvester is presented in this paper. The antenna structure designed and simulated by using Mentor Graphics HyperLynx 3D EM software is described in details. The modeling and simulation results along with comparison with experimental data are analyzed and concluded. The main goal of the project is the need to eliminate a traditional battery form the transponder structure. The energy harvesting block, which is used instead, converts ambient energy (electromagnetic energy of typical radio communication system) into electrical power for internal circuitry. The additional function (gathering extra energy) of the transponder antenna causes the necessity to create new designs in this scope
Definition, Characteristics and Determining Parameters of Antennas in Terms of Synthesizing the Interrogation Zone in RFID Systems
The radio frequency identification (RFID) systems are gaining in popularity in automated processes of object identification in various socioeconomic areas. However, despite the existing belief, there is no universal RFID system on the commercial market that could be used in all user applications. All components of a developed solution should be carefully selected or designed according to the specification of objects being recognized and characteristics of their environment. In order to determine parameters of propagation or inductively coupled system, especially when it is dedicated to uncommon applications, a multiaspect analysis has to be taken into consideration. Due to complexity, the problem is reduced to analytical or experimental determination of RFID system operation range and a âtrial and errorâ method is mostly used in the industry practice. In order to cope with the barriers existing in the RFID technology, the authors give the review of latest achievements in this field. They focus on the definition, comprehensive characteristics and determination of the antenna parameters. They also pay attention to the 3D interrogation zone (IZ) that is the main parameter in which multitude technical aspects of the RFID systems are gathered simultaneously, as regards the theoretical synthesis as well as market needs
Modelling and Design of HF RFID Passive Transponders with Additional Energy Harvester
The huge progress in electronics technology and RFID technique gives the opportunity to implement additional features in transponders. It should be noted that either passive or semipassive transponders are supplied with energy that is derived from the electromagnetic field generated by the read/write device and its antenna. This power source is used to conduct radio-communication process and excess energy could be used to power the extra electronic circuits, but the problem is to determine the additional power load impact on the RFID system proper operation and size of interrogation zone. The ability to power the supplementary electronic blocks applied in the HF passive transponders is discussed in detail this paper. The simulation model and test samples with a harvester that recovers energy from the electromagnetic field of read/write device and its antenna have been developed in order to conduct investigations. The harvested energy has been utilized to supply a microprocessor acquisition block for LTCC pressure sensor developed in research previously described by authors
Reliable Communication in Wireless Networks
Wireless communication systems are increasingly being used in industries and infrastructures since they offer significant advantages such as cost effectiveness and scalability with respect to wired communication system. However, the broadcast feature and the unreliable links in the wireless communication system may cause more communication collisions and redundant transmissions. Consequently, guaranteeing reliable and efficient transmission in wireless communication systems has become a big challenging issue. In particular, analysis and evaluation of reliable transmission protocols in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and radio frequency identification system (RFID) are strongly required.
This thesis proposes to model, analyze and evaluate self-configuration algorithms in wireless communication systems. The objective is to propose innovative solutions for communication protocols in WSNs and RFID systems, aiming at optimizing the performance of the algorithms in terms of throughput, reliability and power consumption. The first activity focuses on communication protocols in WSNs, which have been investigated, evaluated and optimized, in order to ensure fast and reliable data transmission between sensor nodes. The second research topic addresses the interference problem in RFID systems. The target is to evaluate and develop precise models for accurately describing the interference among readers. Based on these models, new solutions for reducing collision in RFID systems have been investigated
