    Project Management Communication Strategies to Engage Stakeholders and Improve Project Performance

    Project managers’ ineffective stakeholder communication strategies lead to unsuccessful project performance. Project managers who fail to implement appropriate communication strategies can experience less engagement of their stakeholders, reduced project performance, and decreased sustainability. Grounded in the stakeholder theory, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore the communication strategies project managers use to engage stakeholders and improve project performance. Participants were five project managers who successfully used communication strategies to engage stakeholders and improve project performance. Data were collected from semistructured interviews, company archival documents, and field notes and were analyzed using thematic data analysis. Four themes emerged: clear message and written communication, frequent engagement, transparency and sincerity, and active listening and communication plan. A key recommendation for project managers is to identify project stakeholders, their communication needs, preferred methods of communication, preferred level of detail, education, and culture to provide information that meets their requirements. The implications for positive social change include the potential to increase the funding of small-scale enterprises by engaging project stakeholders of organizations in the Nigerian oil and gas industry

    Despite the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the challenge of realizing sustainability across the triple bottom line of social, environmental, and economic development remains an urgent priority. If anything, it is now imperative that we work towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, the global challenges are significant. Many of the societal challenges represent complex problems that require multifaceted solutions drawing on multidisciplinary approaches.Engineering management involves the management of people and projects related to technological or engineering systems—this includes project management, engineering economy and technology management, as well as the management and leadership of teams. Systems engineering involves the design, integration and management of complex systems over the full life cycle—this includes requirements capture and integrated system design, as well as modelling and simulation. In addition to the theoretical underpinnings of both disciplines, they also provide a range of tools and techniques that can be used to address technological and organisational complexity. The disciplines of engineering management and systems engineering are therefore ideally suited to help tackle both the challenges and the opportunities associated with realising a sustainable future for all.This book provides new insights on how engineering management and systems engineering can be utilised as part of the journey towards sustainability. The book includes a discussion of a broad range of different approaches to investigate sustainability through utilising quantitative, qualitative and conceptual methodologies. The book will be of interest to researchers and students focused on the field of sustainability as well as practitioners concerned with devising strategies for sustainable development

    Effective Strategies to Improve Project Planning in the Banking Industry

    Poor project planning can negatively affect the profitability of information technology (IT) projects. IT project managers in the banking industry who fail to improve project planning can observe a decrease in profitability. Grounded in the structuration theory, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore effective strategies IT project managers use to improve project planning in the banking industry. Participants were four IT project managers in Abidjan-Ivory Coast who successfully used strategies to improve project planning in the banking industry. Data were collected from semistructured interviews and company documents relevant to IT project planning and analyzed using Yin’s five-step process. Five themes emerged: effective communication, effective risk management plan, scope management plan, schedule management plan, and cost management plan. A key recommendation for IT project managers is to use project management information systems and project reporting to share information with the project stakeholders. The implications for positive social change include the potential to sustain financial and economic development in the community through the successful implementation of IT projects

    A Transdisciplinary Approach to Decision Support for Dams in the Northeastern U.S. with Hydropower Potential

    The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) is the regulatory body that oversees non-federally owned dam operations in the United States. With more than 300 hydropower dams across the U.S. seeking FERC relicense between 2020 and 2029, and 135 of those dams within the Northeast region alone, it is prudent to anticipate and plan for such decision-making processes. Anyone may be involved in FERC relicensing; in fact, FERC solicits public comment and requires the licensee to hold a public hearing during the process. Parties may also elect to apply for legal intervenor status, allowing them a more formal entry into the relicensing process. However, there are two key barriers that may keep the public from participating in a dam decision-making process in an impactful way. The first of these barriers is access to information. Having access to the types of information that matters to FERC is important, because it allows the participant to communicate their support or concerns about the relicensing using the language of the process. In particular, participants other than the licensee may not have access to project economic information, so this is a focus in my research. The second barrier is capacity to participate in a way that impacts the process (i.e., institutional knowledge about what kinds of decision criteria (factors) and decision alternatives (project options), as well as relevant data, that FERC typically weighs in their decision making or has considered in the past). Actors not privy to license information (perhaps encountering difficulty in navigating the FERC eLibrary), lacking knowledge of FERC process conventions, or otherwise unfamiliar with hydropower dam schemes or operations have substantial hurdles preventing their effective participation. My research, situated in the sustainability science arena, addresses hydropower project cost and performance assessment and multi-criteria considerations for dam decision support. I lead the development and assessment of an online Dam Decision Support Tool aimed at addressing barriers to the hydropower dam decision-making process. My work demonstrates possibilities for tailoring decision tools to incorporate stakeholder perspectives into decision making about hydropower dams

One of the transfomation is related to the commercial activities addition by the house owner. It make house with full private space become into mixused house with more public spaces or completely changed into full public commercial building. This study investigate the spatial transformation pattern of the kampung houses due to their commercial activities addition. Site observations, interviews and questionnaires were performed to study the spatial transformation. This study found that in kampung houses, the spatial transformation pattern was depend on type of commercial activities and owner perceptions, and there are several steps of the spatial transformation related the commercial activity addition.
