    Experimentation and Modeling of the Effects of Along-Wind Dispersion on Cloud Characteristics of Finite-Duration Contaminant Releases in the Atmosphere

    Along-wind dispersion, or stretching of the cloud in the direction of the wind, plays an important role in the concentration and modeling of contaminant releases in the atmosphere. Theoretical and empirical derivations were compared for appropriate parameterization of along-wind dispersion. Available field data were analyzed to evaluate and improve previous parameterizations of the along-wind dispersion coefficient, σ_x. An experimental test program was developed and executed in an ultra-low speed wind tunnel at the Chemical Hazards Research Center to determine the effects of the time distribution coefficient on true finite-duration releases from an original area source. Multiple wind speeds, release durations, and downwind distances were investigated with ensemble averages for improved quality of the cloud characteristics for each set of test conditions. An overall relationship between the time of peak arrival (TOPa) and the time distribution coefficient σ_t= 0.23*TOPa was demonstrated across all parameters. From this relationship, the along-wind dispersion coefficient can be accurately predicted and scaled appropriately. Additional relationships for the leading and trailing edges of the cloud are appropriately modeled

    This paper discusses the spectral proper orthogonal decomposition and its use in identifying modes, or structures, in flow data. A specific algorithm based on estimating the cross-spectral density tensor with Welch’s method is presented, and guidance is provided on selecting data sampling parameters and understanding tradeoffs among them in terms of bias, variability, aliasing, and leakage. Practical implementation issues, including dealing with large datasets, are discussed and illustrated with examples involving experimental and computational turbulent flow data

    Post-Matrix Product State Methods: To tangent space and beyond

    We develop in full detail the formalism of tangent states to the manifold of matrix product states, and show how they naturally appear in studying time-evolution, excitations and spectral functions. We focus on the case of systems with translation invariance in the thermodynamic limit, where momentum is a well defined quantum number. We present some new illustrative results and discuss analogous constructions for other variational classes. We also discuss generalizations and extensions beyond the tangent space, and give a general outlook towards post matrix product methods.Comment: 40 pages, 8 figure

    Guidewire-mounted thermal sensors to assess coronary hemodynamics

    The vessels of the coronary circulation are prone to arteriosclerotic disease, which can lead to the development of obstructions to blood flow. The conventional way to diagnose the severity of this type of disease is by coronary angiography. This method, however, only provides insight into the morphology of the coronary vessels, whereas for an accurate diagnosis a measure for the actual flow impediment is needed. To perform these measurements, sensor-tipped guidewires have been developed to measure intra-coronary pressure and blood flow velocity. Diagnosis of coronary disease based on the time-average of these measurements have been shown to improve the clinical outcome of treatment significantly. However, since the coronary vessels are embedded in the (contracting) cardiac muscle, the interpretation of these indices is complicated and can be improved by simultaneously assessing the dynamics of coronary pressure and flow. The research described in this thesis therefore focusses on the one hand on developing devices for the simultaneous assessment of coronary pressure and flow dynamics and on the other hand on modeling the heart and coronary vessels to support the interpretation of these dynamic measurements. In the development of a device which can measure both coronary pressure and flow, two different strategies have been chosen. In the first strategy, a method has been developed to operate an already clinically used pressure sensor-tipped guidewire (pressure wire) as a thermal anemometer to also measure flow. In an in-vitro model it has been demonstrated that the power required to electrically heat the sensor is a measure for the shear rate at the sensor surface and that the method can be used to assess coronary flow reserve (CFR). By slightly adapting the method and combining it with a continuous thermodilution method, it has also been shown that the dynamics of both pressure and volumetric flow can be measured simultaneously in physiological representative in-vitro and ex-vivo experiments. The main drawbacks of this thermal method with a pressure wire are the relatively high sensor temperature required and the inability to detect flow reversal. In the second strategy, a new flow sensor, embedded in a flexible polyimide chip, has been specially designed to be mounted on a guidewire. The flow sensing element consists of a heater, operated at constant power, and thermocouples measuring the temperature difference up- and downstream from the heater. To gain insight into the working principle and the importance of the different design parameters, an analytical model has been developed. Experiments where upscaled sensors have been subjected to steady and pulsatile flow, indicate that the model is able to reproduce the experimental results fairly well but that the sensitivity to shear rate is rather limited in the physiological range. This sensitivity to shear rate can possibly be improved by operating the heater at constant temperature, which has been investigated with invitro experiments with upscaled sensors and a finite element analysis of the real, small size sensor. These studies have demonstrated that constant temperature operation of the heater is beneficial over constant power operation and that the dynamics of physiological coronary shear rate, including retrograde flow, can be assessed at an overheat temperature of only 5 K. From these characterization studies a new design of the sensor has been proposed, which is currently being manufactured to be tested in both in-vitro and ex-vivo experiments. To support the interpretation of the dynamic pressure and flow measurements, a numerical model of the heart and coronary circulation has been developed. The model is based on the coupling of four interacting parts: A model for the left ventricle which is based on the mechanics of a single myofiber, a 1D wave propagation model for the large epicardial coronary arteries, a stenosis element, and a Windkessel representation of the coronary micro-vessels. Comparison of the results obtained with the model with experimental observations described in literature has shown that the model is able to simulate the effect of different types of disease on coronary hemodynamics. After further validation, the model can be used as a tool to study the effect of combinations of epicardial and/or microcirculatory disease on pressure- and flow-based indices. To model the relation between the pressure and flow waves in the coronary arteries correctly, as well as to assist in the decision-making regarding the mechanical treatment of coronary stenoses, the mechanical behaviour of the coronary arterial wall is required. Therefore, a mixed numerical-experimental method has been employed to fit a micro-structurally based constitutive model to in-situ extensioninflation experiments on porcine coronary arteries. It has been demonstrated that the model can accurately describe the experimental data and, additionally, it has been found that the most influential parameter, describing the collagen fiber orientation, can be considered constant at physiological loading. In further research, this can be used to tackle over-parameterization issues inherent to fitting similar constitutive models to data obtained in a clinical setting. In this thesis, a computational model of the coronary circulation is presented and methods for simultaneous pressure and flow assessment are introduced. By operating an already clinically used pressure wire as a thermal anemometer, a methodology was developed which is close to clinical application, while a new sensor was designed to be more accurate in different flow conditions

    In situ determination of relative permeability and capillary pressure curves using multiphase flow rates and pressures of wireline formation testers.

    Relative permeability and capillary pressure curves are crucial inputs for reservoir modeling and simulation. Measuring these quantities on core samples in a laboratory is a necessary, but lengthy process. Wireline Formation Tester (WFT) logging is routinely applied in field operations for reservoir evaluation purposes. Since a historical record of WFT data often exists for a field, we propose in our study to estimate multiphase flow properties in situ from the acquired WFT data in a relatively short period of time. The WFT tool records, among other measurements, bottomhole pressures, water-cuts and flow rates by pumping out fluids from a hydrocarbon bearing formation during the cleanup process in order to reduce the contamination level near the wellbore. The contamination, which is water based mud (WBM) filtrate in this study, invades from the openhole during drilling and changes the saturation of hydrocarbon and water in an invaded zone near the wellbore. The proposed methodology estimates multiphase flow properties occurring near the wellbore, such as relative permeability, capillary pressure, damage skin and mud-filtrate invasion by inversion of water-cut and bottomhole pressure recorded during the WFT cleanup. Although the mud-filtrate invasion and the WFT cleanup replicate, respectively, secondary processes of imbibition and drainage in the reservoir, our study is designed under the assumption that a single set of multiphase flow curves represents both imbibition and drainage processes. The study shows that the most important parameters are the curvatures of relative permeability and capillary pressure curves during the processes. Although they can be optimized, prior knowledge of saturation endpoints and depth of mud-filtrate invasion improves the results. Noise levels of WFT logging, and heterogeneities of reservoir properties should be integrated correctly in the study. The methodology uses a detailed numerical model of the invasion and cleanup processes, and WFT tool geometry coupled with an optimizer for the inversion. The model investigates reservoir and fluid properties, and represents the events accurately occurring during drilling, logging, invasion and cleanup. The results from synthetic and field examples demonstrate that relative permeability and capillary pressure, mud-filtrate invasion, damage skin can be estimated successfully in the inversion process

    An experimental investigation of the angular scattering and backscattering behaviors of the simulated clouds of the outer planets

    A cryogenic, 50 liter volume Planetary Cloud Simulation Chamber has been constructed to permit the laboratory study of the cloud compositions which are likely to be found in the atmospheres of the outer planets. On the basis of available data, clouds composed of water ice, carbon dioxide, and liquid and solid ammonia and methane, both pure and in various mixtures, have been generated. Cloud microphysical observations have been permitted through the use of a cloud particle slide injector and photomicrography. Viewports in the lower chamber have enabled the collection of cloud backscattering data using 633 and 838 nm laser light, including linear depolarization ratios and complete Stokes parameterization. The considerable technological difficulties associated with the collection of angular scattering patterns within the chamber, however, could not be completely overcome

    Development and Applications of Adjoint-Based Aerodynamic and Aeroacoustic Multidisciplinary Optimization for Rotorcraft

    Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is one of the most popular proposed solutions for alleviating traffic problems in populated areas. In this context, the proposed types of vehicles mainly consist of rotors and propellers powered by electric motors. However, those rotary-wing components can contribute excessively to noise generation. Therefore, a significant noise concern emerges due to urban air vehicles in or around residential areas. Reducing noise emitted by air vehicles is critically important to improve public acceptance of such vehicles for operations in densely populated areas. Two main objectives of the present dissertation are: (1) to expand the multidisciplinary optimization to utilize adjoint-based aeroacoustic and aerodynamic sensitivities; (2) to optimize the shape of proprotor blades to improve the overall performance of selected rotorcraft from both aerodynamic and aeroacoustic perspectives. This dissertation reports on the development and application of an unsteady discrete adjoint solver for aerodynamic and aeroacoustic coupling to obtain an improved design for quieter rotorcraft. The optimization framework developed through this dissertation can be utilized for multiple flight conditions, multiple receivers, and multiple optimization objectives within the same design process. SU2-based code development involves the implementation of aeroacoustic analysis, adjoint computations, and integrations into a multidisciplinary rotorcraft optimization suite. A computational aeroacoustics tool is embedded into the SU2-suite to predict the propagation of the emitted noise from the moving sources with high fidelity. Capabilities of the developed computational aeroacoustics tool are demonstrated for a range of rotor, propeller, and proprotor applications, and they are verified by comparing with wind tunnel data whenever it is available. The aeroacoustic tool also computes sensitivities with respect to the conserved variables and grid coordinates by employing the algorithmic differentiation method. Integration of an acoustic solver into the discrete adjoint solver and related modifications enable the code to compute aeroacoustic sensitivities with respect to the design variables. Applying the developed optimization framework for a proprotor aims to reduce the noise radiation without sacrificing the required aerodynamic performance value. As an outcome of the optimization during forward-flight and hover, the reshaped blade design emits and propagates lower noise levels as perceived by multiple observers. The major contributions are: (1) a multidisciplinary optimization framework that presents an optimized rotorcraft design for better aeroacoustics and aerodynamics; (2) a novel adjoint-based formulation for aeroacoustic sensitivities with respect to design variables; (3) single acoustic objective function including multiple flight conditions and multiple microphone positions; (4) implementation of Farassat 1A formulation into opensource software, SU2, to compute noise propagation emitted from moving sources. In summary, this dissertation provides the results with high fidelity, a well-integrated and rapidly converging optimization tool to improve the rotorcraft\u27s aeroacoustic performance while retaining or improving the aerodynamic performance. Among the conclusions are the following: (1) Computational fluid dynamics analyses (SU2-CFD) can produce accurate results for various rotorcraft applications. (2) The developed aeroacoustic code predicts noise propagation emitted from propellers, rotors, and proprotors with high-fidelity. (3) The acoustic interaction between propeller and wing components can be assessed by employing the aeroacoustic solver. (4) The multidisciplinary optimization framework successively reduces noise level emitted by a proprotor in multiple flight configurations. (5) The optimized design improves emitted noise radiation while satisfying the given aerodynamic constraint(s)
