    Experiments on Surface Reconstruction for Partially Submerged Marine Structures

    Over the past 10 years, significant scientific effort has been dedicated to the problem of three-dimensional (3-D) surface reconstruction for structural systems. However, the critical area of marine structures remains insufficiently studied. The research presented here focuses on the problem of 3-D surface reconstruction in the marine environment. This paper summarizes our hardware, software, and experimental contributions on surface reconstruction over the past few years (2008–2011). We propose the use of off-the-shelf sensors and a robotic platform to scan marine structures both above and below the waterline, and we develop a method and software system that uses the Ball Pivoting Algorithm (BPA) and the Poisson reconstruction algorithm to reconstruct 3-D surface models of marine structures from the scanned data. We have tested our hardware and software systems extensively in Singapore waters, including operating in rough waters, where water currents are around 1–2 m/s. We present results on construction of various 3-D models of marine structures, including slowly moving structures such as floating platforms, moving boats, and stationary jetties.     Underwater inspection using sonar-based volumetric submaps

    We propose a submap-based technique for mapping of underwater structures with complex geometries. Our approach relies on the use of probabilistic volumetric techniques to create submaps from multibeam sonar scans, as these offer increased outlier robustness. Special attention is paid to the problem of denoising/enhancing sonar data. Pairwise submap alignment constraints are used in a factor graph framework to correct for navigation drift and improve map accuracy.     Efficient and Featureless Approaches to Bathymetric Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping

    This thesis investigates efficient forms of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) that do not require explicit identification, tracking or association of map features. The specific application considered here is subsea robotic bathymetric mapping. In this context, SLAM allows a GPS-denied robot operating near the sea floor to create a self-consistent bathymetric map. This is accomplished using a Rao-Blackwellized Particle Filter (RBPF) whereby each particle maintains a hypothesis of the current vehicle state and map that is efficiently maintained using Distributed Particle Mapping. Through particle weighting and resampling, successive observations of the seafloor structure are used to improve the estimated trajectory and resulting map by enforcing map self consistency. The main contributions of this thesis are two novel map representations, either of which can be paired with the RBPF to perform SLAM. The first is a grid-based 2D depth map that is efficiently stored by exploiting redundancies between different maps. The second is a trajectory map representation that, instead of directly storing estimates of seabed depth, records the trajectory of each particle and synchronises it to a common log of bathymetric observations. Upon detecting a loop closure each particle is weighted by matching new observations to the current predictions. For the grid map approach this is done by extracting the predictions stored in the observed cells. For the trajectory map approach predictions are instead generated from a local reconstruction of their map using Gaussian Process Regression. While the former allows for faster map access the latter requires less memory and fully exploits the spatial correlation in the environment, allowing predictions of seabed depth to be generated in areas that were not directly observed previously. In this case particle resampling therefore not only enforces self-consistency in overlapping sections of the map but additionally enforces self-consistency between neighboring map borders. Both approaches are validated using multibeam sonar data collected from several missions of varying scale by a variety of different Unmanned Underwater Vehicles. These trials demonstrate how the corrections provided by both approaches improve the trajectory and map when compared to dead reckoning fused with Ultra Short Baseline or Long Baseline observations. Furthermore, results are compared with a pre-existing state of the art bathymetric SLAM technique, confirming that similar results can be achieved at a fraction of the computation cost. Lastly the added capabilities of the trajectory map are validated using two different bathymetric datasets. These demonstrate how navigation and mapping corrections can still be achieved when only sparse bathymetry is available (e.g. from a four beam Doppler Velocity Log sensor) or in missions where map overlap is minimal or even non-existent

    Mapping of complex marine environments using an unmanned surface craft

This is particularly true in shallow water and coastal areas with man-made structures such as bridges, piers, and marinas, which can pose formidable challenges to autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) operations. In this thesis, we propose a new approach for mapping shallow water marine environments, combining data from both above and below the water in a robust probabilistic state estimation framework. The ability to rapidly acquire detailed maps of these environments would have many applications, including surveillance, environmental monitoring, forensic search, and disaster recovery. Whereas most recent AUV mapping research has been limited to open waters, far from man-made surface structures, in our work we focus on complex shallow water environments, such as rivers and harbors, where man-made structures block GPS signals and pose hazards to navigation. Our goal is to enable an autonomous surface craft to combine data from the heterogeneous environments above and below the water surface - as if the water were drained, and we had a complete integrated model of the marine environment, with full visibility. To tackle this problem, we propose a new framework for 3D SLAM in marine environments that combines data obtained concurrently from above and below the water in a robust probabilistic state estimation framework. Our work makes systems, algorithmic, and experimental contributions in perceptual robotics for the marine environment. We have created a novel Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV), equipped with substantial onboard computation and an extensive sensor suite that includes three SICK lidars, a Blueview MB2250 imaging sonar, a Doppler Velocity Log, and an integrated global positioning system/inertial measurement unit (GPS/IMU) device. The data from these sensors is processed in a hybrid metric/topological SLAM state estimation framework. A key challenge to mapping is extracting effective constraints from 3D lidar data despite GPS loss and reacquisition. This was achieved by developing a GPS trust engine that uses a semi-supervised learning classifier to ascertain the validity of GPS information for different segments of the vehicle trajectory. This eliminates the troublesome effects of multipath on the vehicle trajectory estimate, and provides cues for submap decomposition. Localization from lidar point clouds is performed using octrees combined with Iterative Closest Point (ICP) matching, which provides constraints between submaps both within and across different mapping sessions. Submap positions are optimized via least squares optimization of the graph of constraints, to achieve global alignment. The global vehicle trajectory is used for subsea sonar bathymetric map generation and for mesh reconstruction from lidar data for 3D visualization of above-water structures. We present experimental results in the vicinity of several structures spanning or along the Charles River between Boston and Cambridge, MA. The Harvard and Longfellow Bridges, three sailing pavilions and a yacht club provide structures of interest, having both extensive superstructure and subsurface foundations. To quantitatively assess the mapping error, we compare against a georeferenced model of the Harvard Bridge using blueprints from the Library of Congress. Our results demonstrate the potential of this new approach to achieve robust and efficient model capture for complex shallow-water marine environments.     Map building fusing acoustic and visual information using autonomous underwater vehicles

The six-degree of freedom location of the camera relative to the navigation frame is derived as part of the mapping process, as are the attitude offsets of the multibeam head and the on-board velocity sensor. The system uses pose graph optimization and the square root information smoothing and mapping framework to simultaneously solve for the robot’s trajectory, the map, and the camera location in the robot’s frame. Matched visual features are treated within the pose graph as images of 3-D landmarks, while multibeam bathymetry submap matches are used to impose relative pose constraints linking robot poses from distinct tracklines of the dive trajectory. The navigation and mapping system presented works under a variety of deployment scenarios, on robots with diverse sensor suites.     A parallel hypothesis method of autonomous underwater vehicle navigation

    Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution June 2009This research presents a parallel hypothesis method for autonomous underwater vehicle navigation that enables a vehicle to expand the operating envelope of existing long baseline acoustic navigation systems by incorporating information that is not normally used. The parallel hypothesis method allows the in-situ identification of acoustic multipath time-of-flight measurements between a vehicle and an external transponder and uses them in real-time to augment the navigation algorithm during periods when direct-path time-of-flight measurements are not available. A proof of concept was conducted using real-world data obtained by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Deep Submergence Lab's Autonomous Benthic Explorer (ABE) and Sentry autonomous underwater vehicles during operations on the Juan de Fuca Ridge. This algorithm uses a nested architecture to break the navigation solution down into basic building blocks for each type of available external information. The algorithm classifies external information as either line of position or gridded observations. For any line of position observation, the algorithm generates a multi-modal block of parallel position estimate hypotheses. The multimodal hypotheses are input into an arbiter which produces a single unimodal output. If a priori maps of gridded information are available, they are used within the arbiter structure to aid in the elimination of false hypotheses. For the proof of concept, this research uses ranges from a single external acoustic transponder in the hypothesis generation process and grids of low-resolution bathymetric data from a ship-based multibeam sonar in the arbitration process. The major contributions of this research include the in-situ identification of acoustic multipath time-of-flight measurements, the multiscale utilization of a priori low-resolution bathymetric data in a high-resolution navigation algorithm, and the design of a navigation algorithm with a exible architecture. This flexible architecture allows the incorporation of multimodal beliefs without requiring a complex mechanism for real-time hypothesis generation and culling, and it allows the real-time incorporation of multiple types of external information as they become available in situ into the overall navigation solution

    Self consistent bathymetric mapping from robotic vehicles in the deep ocean

    Submitted In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution June 2005Obtaining accurate and repeatable navigation for robotic vehicles in the deep ocean is difficult and consequently a limiting factor when constructing vehicle-based bathymetric maps. This thesis presents a methodology to produce self-consistent maps and simultaneously improve vehicle position estimation by exploiting accurate local navigation and utilizing terrain relative measurements. It is common for errors in the vehicle position estimate to far exceed the errors associated with the acoustic range sensor. This disparity creates inconsistency when an area is imaged multiple times and causes artifacts that distort map integrity. Our technique utilizes small terrain "submaps" that can be pairwise registered and used to additionally constrain the vehicle position estimates in accordance with actual bottom topography. A delayed state Kalman filter is used to incorporate these sub-map registrations as relative position measurements between previously visited vehicle locations. The archiving of previous positions in a filter state vector allows for continual adjustment of the sub-map locations. The terrain registration is accomplished using a two dimensional correlation and a six degree of freedom point cloud alignment method tailored for bathymetric data. The complete bathymetric map is then created from the union of all sub-maps that have been aligned in a consistent manner.     Toward autonomous exploration in confined underwater environments

The definitive version was published in Journal of Field Robotics 33 (2016): 994-1012, doi:10.1002/rob.21640.In this field note we detail the operations and discuss the results of an experiment conducted in the unstructured environment of an underwater cave complex, using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). For this experiment the AUV was equipped with two acoustic sonar to simultaneously map the caves’ horizontal and vertical surfaces. Although the caves’ spatial complexity required AUV guidance by a diver, this field deployment successfully demonstrates a scan matching algorithm in a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) framework that significantly reduces and bounds the localization error for fully autonomous navigation.     Towards High-resolution Imaging from Underwater Vehicles

    Large area mapping at high resolution underwater continues to be constrained by sensor-level environmental constraints and the mismatch between available navigation and sensor accuracy. In this paper, advances are presented that exploit aspects of the sensing modality, and consistency and redundancy within local sensor measurements to build high-resolution optical and acoustic maps that are a consistent representation of the environment. This work is presented in the context of real-world data acquired using autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) working in diverse applications including shallow water coral reef surveys with the Seabed AUV, a forensic survey of the RMS Titanic in the North Atlantic at a depth of 4100 m using the Hercules ROV, and a survey of the TAG hydrothermal vent area in the mid-Atlantic at a depth of 3600 m using the Jason II ROV. Specifically, the focus is on the related problems of structure from motion from underwater optical imagery assuming pose instrumented calibrated cameras. General wide baseline solutions are presented for these problems based on the extension of techniques from the simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), photogrammetric and the computer vision communities. It is also examined how such techniques can be extended for the very different sensing modality and scale associated with multi-beam bathymetric mapping.     Towards autonomous localization and mapping of AUVs: a survey

    Purpose The main purpose of this paper is to investigate two key elements of localization and mapping of Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), i.e. to overview various sensors and algorithms used for underwater localization and mapping, and to make suggestions for future research. Design/methodology/approach The authors first review various sensors and algorithms used for AUVs in the terms of basic working principle, characters, their advantages and disadvantages. The statistical analysis is carried out by studying 35 AUV platforms according to the application circumstances of sensors and algorithms. Findings As real-world applications have different requirements and specifications, it is necessary to select the most appropriate one by balancing various factors such as accuracy, cost, size, etc. Although highly accurate localization and mapping in an underwater environment is very difficult, more and more accurate and robust navigation solutions will be achieved with the development of both sensors and algorithms. Research limitations/implications This paper provides an overview of the state of art underwater localisation and mapping algorithms and systems. No experiments are conducted for verification. Practical implications The paper will give readers a clear guideline to find suitable underwater localisation and mapping algorithms and systems for their practical applications in hand. Social implications There is a wide range of audiences who will benefit from reading this comprehensive survey of autonomous localisation and mapping of UAVs. Originality/value The paper will provide useful information and suggestions to research students, engineers and scientists who work in the field of autonomous underwater vehicles
