    A Cross-layer Approach for MPTCP Path Management in Heterogeneous Vehicular Networks

    Multipath communication has recently arisen as a promising tool to address reliable communication in vehicular networks. The architecture of Multipath TCP (MPTCP) is designed to facilitate concurrent utilization of multiple network interfaces, thereby enabling the system to optimize network throughput. In the context of vehicular environments, MPTCP offers a promising solution for seamless roaming, as it enables the system to maintain a stable connection by switching between available network interfaces. This paper investigates the suitability of MPTCP to support resilient and efficient Vehicleto-Infrastructure (V2I) communication over heterogeneous networks. First, we identify and discuss several challenges that arise in heterogeneous vehicular networks, including issues such as Head-of-Line (HoL) blocking and service interruptions during handover events. Then, we propose a cross-layer path management scheme for MPTCP, that leverages real-time network information to improve the reliability and efficiency of multipath vehicular communication. Our emulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme not only achieves seamless mobility across heterogeneous networks but also significantly reduces handover latency, packet loss, and out-of-order packet delivery. These improvements have a direct impact on the quality of experience for vehicular users, as they lead to lower application layer delay and higher throughput

    A Survey on Handover Management in Mobility Architectures

    This work presents a comprehensive and structured taxonomy of available techniques for managing the handover process in mobility architectures. Representative works from the existing literature have been divided into appropriate categories, based on their ability to support horizontal handovers, vertical handovers and multihoming. We describe approaches designed to work on the current Internet (i.e. IPv4-based networks), as well as those that have been devised for the "future" Internet (e.g. IPv6-based networks and extensions). Quantitative measures and qualitative indicators are also presented and used to evaluate and compare the examined approaches. This critical review provides some valuable guidelines and suggestions for designing and developing mobility architectures, including some practical expedients (e.g. those required in the current Internet environment), aimed to cope with the presence of NAT/firewalls and to provide support to legacy systems and several communication protocols working at the application layer

    An adaptive multipath protocol for efficient IP handoff in mobile wireless networks

    Achieving IP handoff with a short latency and minimal packet loss is essential for mobile devices that roam across IP subnets. Many existing solutions require changes to be made to the network or transport layer, and they tend to suffer from long handoff latency in either soft or hard handoff scenario, or both; and some are difficult to deploy in practice. We propose a new protocol, called the adaptive multipath protocol, to achieve efficient IP handoff. Based on link-layer signal strength measurements, two different schemes are used to handle soft and hard handoff respectively. Seamless IP handoff is achieved by using multiple transport layer connections on top of persistent link-layer connectivity during soft handoff. To achieve low handoff latency during hard handoff, a set of distributed sessions repositories (SRs), which are independent of the end hosts, are employed. Simulation results clearly support our claims. In particular, the latency for hard handoff is found to be as low as 50% of that of Fast handoff. © 2006 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    Handoff Characterization of Multipath Video Streaming

    Video streaming has become the major source of Internet traffic nowadays. Considering that content delivery network providers utilize Video over Hypertext Transfer Protocol/ Transmission Control Protocol (HTTP/TCP) as the preferred protocol stack for video streaming, understanding TCP performance in transporting video streams has become paramount. Recently, multipath transport protocols have allowed streaming of video over multiple paths. In this paper, we analyze the impact of handoffs on multipath video streaming and network performance on WiFi and cellular paths.     QoS-aware service continuity in the virtualized edge

    5G systems are envisioned to support numerous delay-sensitive applications such as the tactile Internet, mobile gaming, and augmented reality. Such applications impose new demands on service providers in terms of the quality of service (QoS) provided to the end-users. Achieving these demands in mobile 5G-enabled networks represent a technical and administrative challenge. One of the solutions proposed is to provide cloud computing capabilities at the edge of the network. In such vision, services are cloudified and encapsulated within the virtual machines or containers placed in cloud hosts at the network access layer. To enable ultrashort processing times and immediate service response, fast instantiation, and migration of service instances between edge nodes are mandatory to cope with the consequences of user’s mobility. This paper surveys the techniques proposed for service migration at the edge of the network. We focus on QoS-aware service instantiation and migration approaches, comparing the mechanisms followed and emphasizing their advantages and disadvantages.     Transport Layer Optimizations for Heterogeneous Wireless Multimedia Networks

    The explosive growth of the Internet during the last few years, has been propelled by the TCP/IP protocol suite and the best effort packet forwarding service. However, quality of service (QoS) is far from being a reality especially for multimedia services like video streaming and video conferencing. In the case of wireless and mobile networks, the problem becomes even worse due to the physics of the medium, resulting into further deterioration of the system performance. Goal of this dissertation is the systematic development of comprehensive models that jointly characterize the performance of transport protocols and media delivery in heterogeneous wireless networks. At the core of our novel methodology, is the use of analytical models for driving the design of media transport algorithms, so that the delivery of conversational and non-interactive multimedia data is enhanced in terms of throughput, delay, and jitter. More speciffically, we develop analytical models that characterize the throughput and goodput of the transmission control protocol (TCP) and the transmission friendly rate control (TFRC) protocol, when CBR and VBR multimedia workloads are considered. Subsequently, we enhance the transport protocol models with new parameters that capture the playback buffer performance and the expected video distortion at the receiver. In this way a complete end-to-end model for media streaming is obtained. This model is used as a basis for a new algorithm for rate-distortion optimized mode selection in video streaming appli- cations. As a next step, we extend the developed models for the aforementioned protocols, so that heterogeneous wireless networks can be accommodated. Subsequently, new algorithms are proposed in order to enhance the developed media streaming algorithms when heterogeneous wireless networks are also included.     Exploiting user contention to optimize proactive resource allocation in future networks

    In order to provide ubiquitous communication, seamless connectivity is now required in all environments including highly mobile networks. By using vertical handover techniques it is possible to provide uninterrupted communication as connections are dynamically switched between wireless networks as users move around. However, in a highly mobile environment, traditional reactive approaches to handover are inadequate. Therefore, proactive handover techniques, in which mobile nodes attempt to determine the best time and place to handover to local networks, are actively being investigated in the context of next generation mobile networks. The Y-Comm Framework which looks at proactive handover techniques has de�fined two key parameters: Time Before Handover and the Network Dwell Time, for any given network topology. Using this approach, it is possible to enhance resource management in common networks using probabilistic mechanisms because it is now possible to express contention for resources in terms of: No Contention, Partial Contention and Full Contention. As network resources are shared between many users, resource management must be a key part of any communication system as it is needed to provide seamless communication and to ensure that applications and servers receive their required Quality-of-Service. In this thesis, the contention for channel resources being allocated to mobile nodes is analysed. The work presents a new methodology to support proactive resource allocation for emerging future networks such as Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs) by allowing us to calculate the probability of contention based on user demand of network resources. These results are veri�ed using simulation. In addition, this proactive approach is further enhanced by the use of a contention queue to detect contention between incoming requests and those waiting for service. This thesis also presents a new methodology to support proactive resource allocation for future networks such as Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks. The proposed approach has been applied to a vehicular testbed and results are presented that show that this approach can improve overall network performance in mobile heterogeneous environments. The results show that the analysis of user contention does provide a proactive mechanism to improve the performance of resource allocation in mobile networks
