    Fast and Secure Friend Recommendation in Online Social Networks

    Online Social Networks have completely transformed communication in the world of social networks. Participation in online social networks have been growing significantly and is expected to continue to grow in the upcoming years. As user participation in online social media is on the rise, so is the concern pertaining to user privacy and information security; users want to interact on social media without jeopardizing their privacy and personal information. Extensive research has been conducted in the area of developing privacy-preserving protocols to allow users to interact in a secure and privacy-preserving environment. One of the elements that social media have is the feature or ability to befriend other users. While a user may manually search for friends to “add”, social media networks like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and others facilitate friend recommendations to their users based on different criteria. We examine and compare the advantages and disadvantages of existing privacy-preserving techniques and schemes. We also analyze di↔erent models used to implement friend recommendation protocols and study proximity measurement metrics used in existing works. This thesis scrutinizes the security weaknesses and vulnerabilities of three Friend Recommendation Protocols from existing work and develop a corresponding solution. We propose a (FSFR) protocol that is based on Shamir’s Secret Sharing to facilitate friend recommendations in Online Social Networks in a fast, secure and private manner. After comparing our protocol with existing protocols in terms of security, computation efficiency, costs, flexibility and more, we conclude that our FSFR protocol guarantees a superior and more efficient friend recommendation protocol

    Privacy-preserving collaboration in an integrated social environment

    Privacy and security of data have been a critical concern at the state, organization and individual levels since times immemorial. New and innovative methods for data storage, retrieval and analysis have given rise to greater challenges on these fronts. Online social networks (OSNs) are at the forefront of individual privacy concerns due to their ubiquity, popularity and possession of a large collection of users' personal data. These OSNs use recommender systems along with their integration partners (IPs) for offering an enriching user experience and growth. However, the recommender systems provided by these OSNs inadvertently leak private user information. In this work, we develop solutions targeted at addressing existing, real-world privacy issues for recommender systems that are deployed across multiple OSNs. Specifically, we identify the various ways through which privacy leaks can occur in a friend recommendation system (FRS), and propose a comprehensive solution that integrates both Differential Privacy and Secure Multi-Party Computation (MPC) to provide a holistic privacy guarantee. We model a privacy-preserving similarity computation framework and library named Lucene-P2. It includes the efficient privacy-preserving Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) extension. OSNs can use the Lucene-P2 framework to evaluate similarity scores for their private inputs without sharing them. Security proofs are provided under semi-honest and malicious adversary models. We analyze the computation and communication complexities of the protocols proposed and empirically test them on real-world datasets. These solutions provide functional efficiency and data utility for practical applications to an extent.Includes bibliographical references

    GraphSE2^2: An Encrypted Graph Database for Privacy-Preserving Social Search

    In this paper, we propose GraphSE2^2, an encrypted graph database for online social network services to address massive data breaches. GraphSE2^2 preserves the functionality of social search, a key enabler for quality social network services, where social search queries are conducted on a large-scale social graph and meanwhile perform set and computational operations on user-generated contents. To enable efficient privacy-preserving social search, GraphSE2^2 provides an encrypted structural data model to facilitate parallel and encrypted graph data access. It is also designed to decompose complex social search queries into atomic operations and realise them via interchangeable protocols in a fast and scalable manner. We build GraphSE2^2 with various queries supported in the Facebook graph search engine and implement a full-fledged prototype.     Recommender systems have become an integral part of many social networks and extract knowledge from a user's personal and sensitive data both explicitly, with the user's knowledge, and implicitly. This trend has created major privacy concerns as users are mostly unaware of what data and how much data is being used and how securely it is used. In this context, several works have been done to address privacy concerns for usage in online social network data and by recommender systems. This paper surveys the main privacy concerns, measurements and privacy-preserving techniques used in large-scale online social networks and recommender systems.     In recent years, Online Social Networks (OSNs) have become an important\ud part of daily life for many. Users build explicit networks to represent their\ud social relationships, either existing or new. Users also often upload and share a plethora of information related to their personal lives. The potential privacy risks of such behavior are often underestimated or ignored. For example, users often disclose personal information to a larger audience than intended. Users may even post information about others without their consent. A lack of experience and awareness in users, as well as proper tools and design of the OSNs, perpetuate the situation. This paper aims to provide insight into such privacy issues and looks at OSNs, their associated privacy risks, and existing research into solutions. The final goal is to help identify the research directions for the Kindred Spirits project
