    First experiences with Personal Networks as an enabling platform for service providers

    By developing demonstrators and performing small-scale user trials, we found various opportunities and pitfalls for deploying personal networks (PNs) on a commercial basis. The demonstrators were created using as many as possible legacy devices and proven technologies. They deal with applications in the health sector, home services, tourism, and the transportation sector. This paper describes the various architectures and our experiences with the end users and the technology. We conclude that context awareness, service discovery, and content management are very important in PNs and that a personal network provider role is necessary to realize these functions under the assumptions we made. The PNPay Travel demonstrator suggests that PN service platforms provide an opportunity to develop true trans-sector services

Smart cards are becoming increasingly popular among transit agencies primarily because they are convenient for customers, reduce administrative costs for transit agencies, and have the potential of improving the performance of complex transit systems overall.     The Economics of the Internet of Things in the Global South

    While the Internet of Things (IoT) is not new, its key components are becoming increasingly affordable now, which makes the technology extremely attractive for the Global South. By collecting data from various IoT sources, combining them with data from other sources and using big data analytics, decisions can be made and actions can be taken that can have important economic, social, ecological and environmental implications in these countries. The most visible impacts of the IoT in these countries include improvements in agricultural and food systems, enhancement of environmental security and resource conservation, achievement of better healthcare, public health and medicine, and enhancement of the efficiency of key industries. This paper provides an overview of how the IoT is currently being used in the Global South. It also discusses the opportunities and challenges that IoT initiatives present there. The analysis indicates that the IoT may address some of the institutional bottlenecks, technological challenges and key sources of high transaction costs. On the other hand, various sources of underdevelopment may act as barriers to full utilisation of the IoT

    Bluetooth low energy based ticketing systems

    This thesis proposes a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) based payment solution for public transportation. The thesis first reviews some of the ‘Mobile payment solutions´. Traditionally, these services have revolved around technologies like Barcodes, Quick Response (QR) codes, Short Messaging Services (SMS) etc. However, with the advent of smartphones equipped with Bluetooth controllers and security chips, a number of innovative payment services are being studied. Furthermore, this thesis also presents the necessary background to understand the BLE technology. Based on BLE technology, BLE based ticketing protocols are presented. An emphasis on Public transport agency is made. To accomplish the task of designing these protocols, Generic Attribute Profile (GATT) system is extensively studied. GATT defines the concepts of services and profiles into the BLE architecture. Profiles like alert notification, proximity and blood pressure are already defined in the BLE specification. Any new profiles created will be put on top of GATT and are known as Custom Profiles. There are Bluetooth controllers manufactured by Nordic semiconductor which is used as reference in designing these protocols. However complete implementation of the system is not performed in this work. A model with necessary protocols is only presented here. This work can also be implemented on various Bluetooth manufacturing controllers

    Semantic discovery and reuse of business process patterns

    Patterns currently play an important role in modern information systems (IS) development and their use has mainly been restricted to the design and implementation phases of the development lifecycle. Given the increasing significance of business modelling in IS development, patterns have the potential of providing a viable solution for promoting reusability of recurrent generalized models in the very early stages of development. As a statement of research-in-progress this paper focuses on business process patterns and proposes an initial methodological framework for the discovery and reuse of business process patterns within the IS development lifecycle. The framework borrows ideas from the domain engineering literature and proposes the use of semantics to drive both the discovery of patterns as well as their reuse

The use of technology in assisting elderly community is expected to have a positive contribution to support the diversity of required services that promote independent living. Most initiatives in this area are intrinsically focused on providing health-care services to senior citizens. However, a broader perspective of the aging process is required, which is conceptually described as ”active aging”. In this paper, we present some prominent technologies based on context-awareness and Internet of Things that may assist elderly people in different needs during a productive live.
