    Linking information and people in a social system for academic conferences

    This paper investigates the feasibility of maintaining a social information system to support attendees at an academic conference. The main challenge of this work was to create an infrastructure where users’ social activities, such as bookmarking, tagging, and social linking could be used to enhance user navigation and maximize the users’ ability to locate two important types of information in conference settings: presentations to attend and attendees to meet. We developed Conference Navigator 3, a social conference support system that integrates a conference schedule planner with a social linking service. We examined its potential and functions in the context of a medium-scale academic conference. In this paper, we present the design of the system’s socially enabled features and report the results of a conference-based study. Our study demonstrates the feasibility of social information systems for supporting academic conferences. Despite the low number of potential users and the short timeframe in which conferences took place, the usage of the system was high enough to provide sufficient data for social mechanisms. The study shows that most critical social features were highly appreciated and used, and provides direction for further research

    Exploring Social Recommendations with Visual Diversity-Promoting Interfaces

    The beyond-relevance objectives of recommender systems have been drawing more and more attention. For example, a diversity-enhanced interface has been shown to associate positively with overall levels of user satisfaction. However, little is known about how users adopt diversity-enhanced interfaces to accomplish various real-world tasks. In this article, we present two attempts at creating a visual diversity-enhanced interface that presents recommendations beyond a simple ranked list. Our goal was to design a recommender system interface to help users explore the different relevance prospects of recommended items in parallel and to stress their diversity. Two within-subject user studies in the context of social recommendation at academic conferences were conducted to compare our visual interfaces. Results from our user study show that the visual interfaces significantly reduced the exploration efforts required for given tasks and helped users to perceive the recommendation diversity. We show that the users examined a diverse set of recommended items while experiencing an improvement in overall user satisfaction. Also, the users’ subjective evaluations show significant improvement in many user-centric metrics. Experiences are discussed that shed light on avenues for future interface designs

    Controllability and explainability in a hybrid social recommender system

    The growth in artificial intelligence (AI) technology has advanced many human-facing applications. The recommender system is one of the promising sub-domain of AI-driven application, which aims to predict items or ratings based on user preferences. These systems were empowered by large-scale data and automated inference methods that bring useful but puzzling suggestions to the users. That is, the output is usually unpredictable and opaque, which may demonstrate user perceptions of the system that can be confusing, frustrating or even dangerous in many life-changing scenarios. Adding controllability and explainability are two promising approaches to improve human interaction with AI. However, the varying capability of AI-driven applications makes the conventional design principles are less useful. It brings tremendous opportunities as well as challenges for the user interface and interaction design, which has been discussed in the human-computer interaction (HCI) community for over two decades. The goal of this dissertation is to build a framework for AI-driven applications that enables people to interact effectively with the system as well as be able to interpret the output from the system. Specifically, this dissertation presents the exploration of how to bring controllability and explainability to a hybrid social recommender system, included several attempts in designing user-controllable and explainable interfaces that allow the users to fuse multi-dimensional relevance and request explanations of the received recommendations. The works contribute to the HCI fields by providing design implications of enhancing human-AI interaction and gaining transparency of AI-driven applications

    Exploring delegate engagement with an augmented conference

    We describe a qualitative study of delegate engagement with technology in academic conferences through a large- scale deployment of prototype technologies. These deployments represent current themes in conference technologies, such as providing access to content and opportunities for socialising between delegates. We consider not just the use of individual technologies, but also the overall impact of an assemblage of interfaces, ranging from ambient to interactive and mobile to situated. Based on a two-week deployment followed by interviews and surveys of attendees, we discuss the ways in which delegates engaged with the prototypes and the implications this had for their experience of the conferences. From our findings, we draw three new themes to inform the development of future conference technologies

    Relational social recommendation: Application to the academic domain

    This paper outlines RSR, a relational social recommendation approach applied to a social graph comprised of relational entity profiles. RSR uses information extraction and learning methods to obtain relational facts about persons of interest from the Web, and generates an associative entity-relation social network from their extracted personal profiles. As a case study, we consider the task of peer recommendation at scientific conferences. Given a social graph of scholars, RSR employs graph similarity measures to rank conference participants by their relatedness to a user. Unlike other recommender systems that perform social rankings, RSR provides the user with detailed supporting explanations in the form of relational connecting paths. In a set of user studies, we collected feedbacks from participants onsite of scientific conferences, pertaining to RSR quality of recommendations and explanations. The feedbacks indicate that users appreciate and benefit from RSR explainability features. The feedbacks further indicate on recommendation serendipity using RSR, having it recommend persons of interest who are not apriori known to the user, oftentimes exposing surprising inter-personal associations. Finally, we outline and assess potential gains in recommendation relevance and serendipity using path-based relational learning within RSR

    AI for the Common Good?! Pitfalls, challenges, and Ethics Pen-Testing

    Recently, many AI researchers and practitioners have embarked on research visions that involve doing AI for "Good". This is part of a general drive towards infusing AI research and practice with ethical thinking. One frequent theme in current ethical guidelines is the requirement that AI be good for all, or: contribute to the Common Good. But what is the Common Good, and is it enough to want to be good? Via four lead questions, I will illustrate challenges and pitfalls when determining, from an AI point of view, what the Common Good is and how it can be enhanced by AI. The questions are: What is the problem / What is a problem?, Who defines the problem?, What is the role of knowledge?, and What are important side effects and dynamics? The illustration will use an example from the domain of "AI for Social Good", more specifically "Data Science for Social Good". Even if the importance of these questions may be known at an abstract level, they do not get asked sufficiently in practice, as shown by an exploratory study of 99 contributions to recent conferences in the field. Turning these challenges and pitfalls into a positive recommendation, as a conclusion I will draw on another characteristic of computer-science thinking and practice to make these impediments visible and attenuate them: "attacks" as a method for improving design.     Social Relations and Methods in Recommender Systems: A Systematic Review

    With the constant growth of information, data sparsity problems, and cold start have become a complex problem in obtaining accurate recommendations. Currently, authors consider the user's historical behavior and find contextual information about the user, such as social relationships, time information, and location. In this work, a systematic review of the literature on recommender systems that use the information on social relationships between users was carried out. As the main findings, social relations were classified into three groups: trust, friend activities, and user interactions. Likewise, the collaborative filtering approach was the most used, and with the best results, considering the methods based on memory and model. The most used metrics that we found, and the recommendation methods studied in mobile applications are presented. The information provided by this study can be valuable to increase the precision of the recommendations

    CHORUS Deliverable 3.3: Vision Document - Intermediate version

    The goal of the CHORUS vision document is to create a high level vision on audio-visual search engines in order to give guidance to the future R&D work in this area (in line with the mandate of CHORUS as a Coordination Action). This current intermediate draft of the CHORUS vision document (D3.3) is based on the previous CHORUS vision documents D3.1 to D3.2 and on the results of the six CHORUS Think-Tank meetings held in March, September and November 2007 as well as in April, July and October 2008, and on the feedback from other CHORUS events. The outcome of the six Think-Thank meetings will not just be to the benefit of the participants which are stakeholders and experts from academia and industry – CHORUS, as a coordination action of the EC, will feed back the findings (see Summary) to the projects under its purview and, via its website, to the whole community working in the domain of AV content search. A few subjections of this deliverable are to be completed after the eights (and presumably last) Think-Tank meeting in spring 2009

    InnoJam: A Web 2.0 discussion platform featuring a recommender system

    In this Master Thesis we have designed, implemented and evaluated a Web 2.0 platform for massive online-discussion, inspired by Innovation Jams. Innovation Jams, the original initiative from IBM, has proven to be successful at bringing together vast amounts of people, capturing their untapped knowledge and, while the participants are discussing, gather useful insights for a companyĘĽs innovation strategy [Spangler et al. 2006, Bjelland and Chapman Wood 2008]. Our approach, based in an open-source forum system, features visualization techniques and a recommender system in order to provide the participants in the Jam with useful insights and interesting discussion recommendations for an improved participation. A theoretical introduction and a state-of-the-art survey in recommender systems has been gathered in order to frame and support the design of the hybrid recommender system [Burke 2002], composed by a content-based and a collaborative filtering recommenders, developed for InnoJam
