Human resource management with Islamic management principles:a dialectic for a reverse diffusion in management
Purpose â The purpose of this paper is to explore the nature and contents of Islamic management practices and their consequent implications for human resource management (HRM) in Arab countries. In addition, it aims to examine the implications for multinational companies (MNCs) operating in Islamic countries and the impact of globalisation before proceeding to an analysis of managerial problems in Arab countries and the need for understanding Islamic management principles by Arab (national) and international managers. Design/methodology/approach â The paper takes the form of a qualitative approach based on an extensive review of relevant literature and the employment of examples from selected Arab countries. Findings â The study reveals that a gap exists between the theory of Islamic management and the practice of management in Arab countries. Management in Arab countries is informed and heavily influenced by non-Islamic traditional and national cultural values and norms of different countries and by Western management thinking rather than Islamic principles derived from the Holy Quran (words of God) and the Hadith (words of the Prophet Mohamed). Research limitations/implications â The paper argues that one of the main reasons for the lack of progress in most Arab and Islamic countries is the mismatch between global integration and local responsiveness because of an excess forward diffusion of Western management and business practices with little understanding and, hence, the implementation of Islamic management principles by both local and international managers in Arab countries. It adopts the view that there is a gap between the knowledge possessed by national and international managers in order to manage locally and what is required from the local workforce to be managed effectively. The main limitation of this study is the lack of empirical research evidence to support the points deducted from this review of literature. Practical implications â Understanding Islamic management principles could help to develop a more appropriate type of management best practice in Arab and Islamic countries while still benefiting from the transfer of relevant Western management techniques and Western technology. The paper also argues that a reverse diffusion of management knowledge and skills by managers of MNCs is very important for the effective management of human resources in host countries. National cultural contexts and different views of work values have made a major impact on the ability of firms to address HRM issues in different cultural settings. Originality/value â The paper contributes to the comparatively sparse literature on Islamic management and its applications by identifying key issues for HRM implementation and in developing Western understanding of Islamic management systems
Saudi Women Online Practices on Social Media Platforms: A Qualitative Multi-Method Study
This study is a part of an ongoing PhD research into Saudi womenâs online practices across a number of social media platforms (SMP) (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram). The focus of this thesis is first to discover Saudi womenâs online practices across different SMP, and second, to explore the relationship between these practices and Saudi womenâs identities. A qualitative multi-method approach is adopted, including online observations and semi-structured interviews. Following purposive and snowballing sampling, twelve Saudi women from different cities in Saudi Arabia (Jeddah, Riyadh, and Dammam) participated. Initial findings indicate that (a) Saudi womenâs online practices vary across SMP by appropriating platformsâ features and affordances, (b) SMP are used as spaces where Saudi women cautiously manage contextsâ collapse and divide with different audiences across SMP, and (c) Saudi womenâs online practices have reshaped their offline identity and vice versa, and Saudi womenâs offline identities are represented online as a part of their online identities. Though there is a growing body of literature in HCI, CHI, and CSCW in social media studies within the Arab and Gulf regions (GCC), there is little research addressing Saudi womenâs online practices on SMP in particular. Therefore, this study aims to make a novel contribution to the field of socio-technological integration, and particularly how cultural contexts shape technology adoption, to help form a greater understanding of the challenges involved

The e-government implementation directions in Oman: A preliminay investigation
Electronic government has established itself as the primary enabler for transforming the way government services are offered to citizens. In the gulf countries, public sector transformation efforts are focused towards increasing accessibility, availability, competitive advances and enhancing services in civil administration. The Sultanate of Oman is one such example of the Gulf countries where large investments have been made since 2003 to implement electronic services in the public sector. Using a qualitative research approach, this research investigates the improvements that have been made to facilitate these electronic services in three public organisations, and their resulting impact within the organisations. The empirical results reveal that among others, top management support, integration and IT staff skills and capabilities are the most important factors that facilitate e-government initiatives in the Omani public sector
Social networking and transnational capitalism
Social Networking Sites (SNS) have become a key component of usersâ experience of the internet. Whilst much has been made of the social dynamics of online SNS, the influence of the structures and operations of these sites â and the business models behind them â on users is rarely accounted for. This paper argues that behind the social behaviours sup- ported by SNS, there is a growing shift towards viewing online communities as commodities, and SNS as an extension of mainstream capitalist ideologies fostered by existing patterns of commercialization and consumption. Using the works of Gramsci, Gill and Hardt & Negri to provide a critical grounding, this paper explores the popular SNS site âFacebookâ and suggests that SNS may feel to the users to be free, social, personal, but in fact SNS are business as usual
Communication Channels Utilized by Emirati Females to Enact Leadership
The purpose of this exploratory study was to identify the communication channels six Emirati females concurrently employed in organizations in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates in which they had supervisory responsibilities; formal, legitimate authority; and positional leadership roles recalled using with their direct reports to enact leadership. In particular, the study attempted to ascertain the reasons for the selection of communication channels when engaged in downward communication with organizational subordinates. Data were collected via three interviews with each participant over a four week period. Interviews were conducted both face-to-face and via telephone. Data were analyzed via thematic content analysis to identify themes, patterns, and/or trends in communication channels selected and the reasons for selection of these channels when engaged in downward communication with direct reports. Findings indicated the participantsâ preferred channel of communication when engaged in downward communication with their direct reports was face-to-face. Frequently face-to-face communication was reinforced via written follow-up. Encoding negative messages via written channels was found to be vigorously avoided except in the most extreme cases. Cultural factors were indicated to be influential in the participantsâ selection of communication channel. The findings of this study have workplace preparation and training applications for private sector organizations, government, and state-owned enterprises in Abu Dhabiâin particular, those organizations in which expatriates have supervisory responsibilities; formal, legitimate authority; and positional leadership responsibilities in relation to Emirati direct reports. Urban traditions in the contemporary lived space of cities on the Arabian Peninsula
This article aims to answer the question âWhose tradition?â in relation to the contemporary architecture and urbanism of the Arabian Peninsula. It first contextualizes tradition in the region within the geocultural politics of the Arab World and identifies key factors that shaped its traditional settlements, including tribal governance, social systems, building materials, and construction techniques. The article then contends that the regionâs urban traditions have been transformed from ones shaped by common people to ones shaped by the elite, in which the role of rulers is heavily emphasized. To explore this view, it analyzes two representative scenes in the contemporary urban lived space of the region, using examples from Dubai and Doha. These are articulated in terms of the emergence of elite enterprises, persistent patterns of social and ethnic segregation, and a continuing struggle to construct identity. Conclusions drawn from the discussion delineate key answers to the question âWhose tradition?â But a framework of examination is also introduced that emphasizes that lived space and the traditions that ensue from it cannot be seen in isolation from other types of space â such as conceived and perceived space. There needs to be a new cycle of knowledge production about cities in the region that integrates concern for all three (lived, conceived and perceived space) to better understand its traditions
